Khrys was waiting for Zach right on time and Zach was
actually not late. This was strange indeed for He is almost never
on time for anything. He was riding his Arabian and Tiny was
following with the three wolves scattered about the area. As
usual they were romping about and generally having a good
time. They arrived at the picnic area about an hour later. He
had in advance located a grove of trees that were in full flower
there was wood stacked and the fire was already set up and
waiting to be lit. It was right next to a small lake. The absence
of any breeze allowed a mirror like apearance to the lake. A
stream went out of the lake and off toward the horizon. It was
so calm and smooth that the river appeared to flow into or from
the sky the reflection was so perfect.
Khrysta looked at Zach "You had all of this set up in advance!
What made you so sure that I would go on a picnic with you?"
Zach smiled back at her "I wasn't sure at all! Just really
hopefull and rather than worry about whether you would say yes
or no I spent my time getting ready in case."
Impishly she asked "What would you be doing now if I had said no?"
He shrugged "That fire would would be burning very brightly and I would be
drunk and quite possibly depressed!"
With that He poured her a glass of white champagne and
offered it to her.As She reached up to take it He smiled and said.
"For you white champagne
Perfect like the white rose
Different in one thing
This might just tickle your nose"
"Zach you are always laughing and so far all of your poems
are about love. Do you ever get serious...or feel depressed?"
Zach looked down for a moment and then looked her straight in the
eye and said "Yes I do! However I try not to wallow in it. Horrible
things happen to all of us even me. I do not dwell on those things
though because if I only look at that I will teach myself to only see that.
We all have the power to be happy or sad and it is a conscious choice as
to what we each choose to focus our attention on. If we only focus
on our mistakes we will see just that "mistakes" and not what we
learned from them." He picked up a large stick and continued. "What
ever we focus on becomes our goal in the long run." With that He tossed
the stick into the fire and looked back at Khrys."I prefer not to focus on the
stupidity I have rendered in this life. I focus on what I learned, forgive myself but
don't allow myself to forget and I move on with what I learned. They say to err
is human and to forgive is divine. I agree with that! But to forget as well is as
stupid and self defeating as dwelling on it."
"I even have a depressing poem about some of those things and
the way they made me feel. Do you want to hear it?"
"Yes!"
"OK! Here we go! First I have to set the mood a bit."
Zach winked at her bounded off into the woods only to cavort back a few
moments later and throw sappy green boughs into the fire. The smoke
was thick black and horrible. He then grabbed a blanket and drew it over
himself like a cloak and hood. He spun around picked up a great big
gnarled stick and stood just on the other side of the smokey fire.
" BLACK MIRROR
Demons taunt in darkness.......
raising hoary head...
Night air is filled with dankness
dark souls dancing round my bed
Sorcerer pounds his staff times nine.
Evil emits a martial cry
"All these deeds be Thine"...
Vile creatures slither by
Writhing in pain amid the din
Silent scream of terror in the night
None to deliver you from your sin
Such a thing is truth....at first sight!"
Khrysta laughed "That is really depressing! It makes me feel
very uncomfortable!"
Suddenly He jumped through the smoke and landed right in front of
her. Looking sternly at her and pointing at her with the gnarley old stick
"Good! It's supposed to. Realization of an error on ones part is
very painful and uncomfortable. We either shrink from that
error and hide it away, wallow in it or we grow from it."
He quickly tossed the stick into the fire and folded the blanket
He had been wearing. Smiling at her as He did all of this"Too
dramatic M'Lady?"
"Recite another love poem to make up for that depressing
poem. Please!"
Standing facing her with a pleading look and arms held out to
her He began with a wink.
"Long auburn tresses.....beginning a new day
Time my love confesses.....You have shown me the way
Silence of thought.....moment of action
Sometimes distraught......always attraction
Love is a power.....it holds and binds
Love is a flower.....it unfolds and blinds
Brushed by an angels wing.....through silence we speak
Fly where the eagles sing......to loves lofty peak
Floating on silent winds.....for only you do I care
On your love my heart depends....poems finished. How did I fare?"
Khrysta laughed at him and said "Zach I really think you
need to eat something! It appears as though you are about
to pass out...judging from that last poem."
Zach plopped down on the blanket laughed and began to eat
what Khrys had just handed him. He noticed that She was blushing
a bit and that made him feel as though He was getting somewhere.
Not too much was said on the way back from the picnic. He knew
He was in love with her for good now though. He had never really
fallen in love before. This time He was stricken! He was amazed
at how awkward and clumsy it made him. Never before had He
feared using sharp objects but now he did. All He could do was
laugh at himself.

She hadn't planned on accepting the invitaion to a picnic. There were a million reasons why... the weather was still too cool, she had errands that had to be taken care of, Jon might need her healing again.... everything..... Anything!!! The truth of it simply was that she just wasn't ready to think about a relationship with someone yet. And it was painfully obvious to her that was what Mr. Wulfgar
had in mind. But in the end she had accepted the invition and gone on the picnic.
He told her a bit about himself, and recited more of his poetry. He talked, and they laughed some. Sitting on the blanket with his wolves scattered about, and the head of the large male Judgement in her lap, she felt almost at ease and happy again. Almost......
After the day was done, he took her back to her cottage. Fully expecting him to try to kiss her good bye, Khrys was prepared to move to the side quickly with an excuse or two. Maybe even a slap if he persisted. She was pleasantly surprised when he took her hand and kissed it gently.... holding it for a tender moment longer than necessary before releasing it.
He turned with a smile, mounted his horse and called to the wolves as he rode off. She found herself smiling gently as well.....

Zach didn't go home to his room that night He decided to sleep at the grove. He slept like He never had before. It was restful and filled with pleasant dreams, something He had grown unaccustomed to over the years. Just before the sun broke over the horizon He felt the warm breath of Judgement and a large paw on his chest. All three wolves were sitting there with rabbits. There was one at his feet and two at Judgement's feet. Zach quickly
got up and started the fire. He roasted his rabbit and the wolves each ate their rabbits. Judgement saved one and after everyone had eaten He carried it to Zach.
"Mans best friend is correct. I think I understand." He quickly cased the rabbit and placed it in a basket with some wild herbs. He had another basket which He filled with fruit He picked on the way back to her cottage. By the time they had arrived it would have been quite full if He hadn't left some on another doorstep on the way by. The three wolves had looked at him like he was an idiot for having done that. Zach shrugged "If I give
her enough fruit for a full week, I won't have any reason to drop in now will I?".
As he had deposited the baskets on the steps He had noticed the wolves behaving rather strangely. After watching for a while He realized why. It was cats. "Great she has cats! My favorite animal." His voice got all high pitched and whiney and his hands curled like claws. "You didn't feed me on time. I think I will break this and this and this. Try to feed me on time from now on." He watched as one of the cats came very near the rabbit to
sniff. He let out a deafening hiss and watched the cat do a perfect back flip. "They are entertaining however."
Judgement stayed behind to make sure Khrys got the rabbit and not the cats. "Don't hurt the cats Judgement. She must like them or she wouldn't have so many." He trotted off and left the wolves there, except for Thor who seemed to really dislike the cats. Unless He was allowed to play with them and pinch them. He had already sent a couple up the trees by lightly chomping their tails. He thought that was loads of fun. He was joined later
in the day by his two other wolves. He wondered if the cats or Khrys had gotten the rabbit. There had been an awful lot of cats to watch.

Her eyes opened suddenly at the sharp sounds of a cat fight. Pulling the pillow up over her head Khrys tried to ignore the caterwauling and hissing, but when the excited near bark of a wild dog, or worse, joined in the fray she had to do something. Grabbing up her throwing daggers just in case, she ran for the front door.
As she got to the door, the fight seemed to die down. Hoping that didn't mean that one of her cats was now filling the belly of some large canine she opened the door... a dagger held in a loose grip, ready to throw if need be. Looking all around the front of the cottage the only thing she can see are some verra large paw prints.....obviously belonging to a verra large wolf..... and, what looks like in the shadows off on the other side of the
stream, the verra large wolf they belong to. Oddly enough though, he's just sitting there with his tongue lolling out of his mouth watching her run frantically around the dooryard counting her cats. If she didn't know better, she'd say he was laughing at her, in his own wolfy way.
"You there...you stay away from my cats. ya hear?!" She yells, waving the dagger at him as menacingly as she can. The large animal gives a small yip and turns to leave...again giving the impression of amused laughter. He's joined by another large shadow and the two head out over the fields. As the wolves run through the sunlit fields, Khrys recognizes them as Judgment and Mercy, Zach's wolves. But why were they here at the cottage?
Turning back to the door, she sees the two baskets on her doorstep. One holding fresh picked fruit and some beautiful wild flowers. The other holds what appears to have been, before the mangling and chewing and dragging through the dirt of the dooryard, a skinned rabbit.
"Well, that explains all the caterwauling." Taking up the baskets she goes into the small kitchen and begins cutting the rabbit up. "'Tis usless now, 'cept as cat food." Smiling a bit as she works, "I s'pose the little beasties won the fight after all."

Zach located a room as He was now planning on staying for a while. He spent the afternoon sharpening his scimitar and rid the blade of the nicks and minor corrosion from his last couple of adventures. Zach read the inscription on the blade "Pryeedoopryeedit Krooto " and laughed to himself. He had noticed that the world seemed a happier place all of a sudden. Somehow the world had changed overnight or even more frightening was the thought that
He had somehow changed. He had always been polite to strangers that deserved it, meaning those that had done him no wrong at all. But He actually found himself going out of his way to help people He wouldn't even have noticed before.
He went to The Golden Ivy Tavern and got a glass of mead just like that which Khrys had given him a few nights before. That stuff was absolutely horrible but He didn't want to upset her when she had given him a glass that night. At least not when they were first meeting. He smiled to himself. "That would not have laid the foundation for a solid relationship.".
A stranger walked up to him and said "That mead is an acquired taste there for certain." Zach laughed and smiling at the stranger said "And I'm working on acquiring it right now. Do you want something to drink?"The stranger smiled back at him "Sure but I'm buying if that's all right with you.". Zach winked "You'll get no arguments out of me on that count." The stranger was eyeing his scimitar suspiciously and Zach asked why. "Well in all my
travels I haven't seen a real Damascus blade. They are usually twisted layers of high and low carbon steel and not actually made from wootz."
Zach nodded "Most people just think it was a poor temper put on the blade and don't realize what they are looking at. How in this world did you come by any knowledge of true Damascus steel?"
The stranger set his drink down and looked right back at him and asked "How in the world did you come by Damascus steel in this world?". Zach finished his drink and said "I didn't! I made it before I came here. Or I should say I made the wootz and supervised the rest of the blade manufacture." He held his hand out to Zach "May I look at the blade for a few moments?". Zach shrugged "Sure here you go.". The man looked it over admiring the mottled
appearance and when he saw the inscription he burst out laughing. Every body in the tavern turned to look. The poor guy was laughing so hard he had tears coming out of his eyes. Zach laughed with him "Well I guess since you can read the inscription that tells me where you are from and since I know what you are laughing at, all questions are answered. Now aren't they?" He looked at Zach and said "Yes! I do believe so!" They had a few more drinks and
went their own ways promising to keep in touch.
Late that evening He went to pay Khrys a visit and take her some more of the wild flowers. He also took her some bread, cheese and wine. He knew better than to stay for long. Although He wanted to catch her He wanted her to want to catch him as well. All of his
animals enjoyed the evening trip to the country.

Watching the new litter of kittens playing in the early spring sunlight, Khrys starts to smile. Thinking about the rabbit and the cat fight with Zachary's worlves, her thoughts naturally roam from the kittens playing to end up on Zarchary..... and from Zachary to .......
Shifting in the window suddenly as her thoughts shift as well, she gently rubs her hand where he had kissed it.....
Smiling softly she drinks her tea and allows herself to dream............

Khrys laughed silently as she bit into a large ruby-red apple, watching him walk through her dooryard. "I thought wolves had a keen sense of smell", she said to herself... grinning in delight. Just then, as if to confirm her thought, Judgement trotted over to curl up beneath the spreading boughs of the large maple tree, looking up with a quick glance and another of his wolfy grins.
Khrys was amazed that Zachary hadn't seen her yet. Even though the old tree house built for Brian was fairly high up in the tree, it was open on the side facing the cottage, and this early in the Spring the tree was just beginning to bud. She knew she could be seen clearly by anyone who looked this way.
Licking the juice from her fingers as she finishes off the last of the apple, Khrys drops the core to the ground below her, hearing the slight thump as it hits. Her emerald eyes twinkling with mischief, she goes back to her forgotten book......... wondering if the slight noise will be enough for him to find her............

Zach heard a small sound at the base of the tree and saw his horse heading for the source of the sound. As he approached the horse He noticed that it was eating the remnants of an apple that had fallen out of the maple tree. Smiling to himself He took out a piece of paper from a saddle bag penned a quick note and stuck it to the door. He hopped on his horse and rode around to the barn in back of the
house. "Judgement come on she is probably in town. We shall at least check to see if she is in the barn before we ride off however." All of the animals in unison trotted off to the barn with Zach. He did have to call Judgement three times before he would follow. He kept looking at Zach and up into the tree. "Come on you've seen birds before. I am looking for Khrys let's go!"

"Well... I guess that answers that !!" She thought to herself. Crawling out onto the small platform outside the tree house, she stands and stretches the kinks out before climbing down. "Can't have Mr. Wulfgar leaving without at least saying a How Do You Do". Pulling her dress up between her long, shapely legs and through one of Dae's old belts, she fashions "trousers" for the climb down.
Reaching the ground she crosses the dooryard to the front door and reads the note tacked there. As quietly as she can, she moves to the side of the cottage and peeks around the corner. He's not there...... Smiling at the silliness of the game, but happily playing anyway, she moves along the side of the builiding to the next corner. From here she can see the back of the cottage and the front of the small barn clearly. His horse is in front
of the barn... but the wolves and Zachary are nowhere to be seen. Thinking they must be either in the barn or out of sight behind it, Khrys moves on light bare feet to the open barn door. Looking into the near darkness, she can see the heat of her own horse Emperor clearly, as well as the lingering heat of the wolves and Zach. But no wolves and no Zach.....
Khrys moves into the tack room at the back of the barn to climb up to the hay loft above. Crossing through the swirling of dust motes as they dance in the thin sunlight from the one open window, she knows that someone, or something, passed this way verra recently. Climbing up the ladder into the darkenss above, she can almost sense his presence.
Softly, for some reason not wanting to disturb the stillness, she calls his name.....
"Zach....?"

Zach was quickly stuffing his clothes with hay in the upper loft when He noticed that Khrys was approaching with a stealth that was too good to be an accident. "I think there might be more to her than I at first thought." He had just eased out the front door when She had called out his name.......barely audible but He had heard it. He attached the now full dummy to his horse quickly with a piece of rope. He didn't even get a chance to tie the
knot properly when He could tell she was coming back out. "Sheese! She is sneeky." He gave the horse a slap on the rump and waved the three wolves off with the horse. They took off across the field and were about two hundred feet from the barn when Khrys came out of the door and put her hands on her hips and just smiled to herself.
All of a sudden the dummy fell off of the horse and Tiny turned around and ran back to it and proceeded to eat quite cheerfully on the yummy stuffing. The wolves grabbed the clothes and dragged them back to the side of the barn where Zach was sitting on the ground trying his best to stifle an uncontrollable urge to laugh. As the wolves arrived by the side of the barn to return his spare clothes He knew Khrys would be rounding the corner any
moment. He picked up the clothing and walked to the corner and said in a shakey and nervous voice He said "Remind me to never let myself fall off of my horse.". Then He gave up and started laughing.
She was the most enjoyable and playful woman He had ever run into. There was hope.

Zach laughed and extended a hand. "M'Lady may I walk you back to the safety of your cottage? There be many ferocious beasts about. Man eating horses and evil skin exposing clothes stealing wolves. I know WE ::Raises his eyebrows at her:: wouldn't want
to have you stripped right here before me now would we? Why we hardly know each other!"
Suddenly Zach grabbed his chest and dropped to his knees. Before Khrys could even react He looked up and said "I'm OK! I just feel another sappy love poem coming on. I will be all right after I get it out of my system" Smiling up at her "Will you allow me to get it out of my system? The weak knees will be instantly healed if you will but allow me. The pounding in my chest will never stop as long as you are near but I have grown to love
it."
She put her hands on her hips and before she could say anything, He began.
"Ruby red apple dropped.......... from your finger tips
Tiny upon it hopped........picked it up with his lips
A playful little game.......of hide and seek
I have never felt the same....of your heart I've had a peek
My life is changed forever........from a distant embrace
I see it almost ever........that warm smile on your face
Seeing as I've not before........the world of which I speak
You have touched me to the core.....brought the life that I seek
Crystalline cold nights.......warm azure skies
Kindness for me......in your warm emerald eyes?"
Standing as soon as He finished He stretched "Well I feel much better!". "Shall I lead you safely to your cottage? " Once again with a warm smile on his tanned face He held out his hand. "Or would you prefer this?" With that He crooked his elbow and raised a snobbish nose to the world and looked at her with feigned indifference.

::Smiles as she again reads the words written from his heart::
Zachary~~~~~~
I would love to see you again...... mayhaps dinner at the Red Dragon Inn on Saturday evening? The fare is good and the service as well. And the patrons are always entertaining at the least...... Think about it and let me know.

After what had been a great evening Zach and Khrys went to the arena to have some more fun. Much to his disbelief her old husband was back and She wanted to go talk to him. She had told him not to worry about it but He told her He couldn't help that. He said He understood they had much to talk about since they did have a child. He also told her that He didn't deal well with these types of situations and that being the case, He was going to go
stay where they had the picnic or very close by. He told her that if He was going to stay He had to learn as much about the area as He could and now looked like a good time to be doing just that. Secretly in his heart He was dieing a thousand deaths. He did realize that to stay would be a mistake at this time and He had to wait this one out and hope She had fallen in love with him. He rode away quietly in the night feeling horrible.
