Rather than sit around worrying about how things would turn out in the long run Zach headed off into the woods. If He had won Khrys's heart He would be very happy. If He didn't He might just decide to stay anyway and continue to try. There seemed to be enough scum around that needed to be put correct anyway and there is nothing like a good fight so it was time to learn the area.
He traveled into the woods quite some distance and set up camp in his standard manner. “Well this is an observation and study trip why be uncomfortable?” He started a fire and numerous other time consuming projects that He would need in order to gather all the data on this locale. He located a couple of dead trees and located one with a fibrous under bark. Grabbing the thin layers He flexed the thicker pieces of bark keeping the thinner
material as straight as possible and quickly peeled away large amounts of fiber. He twisted one piece by wetting his hand and holding the fiber in one hand rolled the other end
until it was one long thin piece of cord. Grabbing the piece one fourth of the way up he twisted again until it formed a loop. He then very quickly laid the two loose ends on his leg and rubbed them away causing them to twist together. Before the short end was used up He added another piece this was continued until he had a large ball of twine. Eventually it became somewhat unwieldy and He started a new piece. He did this for an hour or two and had
several hundred feet of string built up by the time He was done. It was a skill that was one of the most critical and overlooked and He was out of practice so He kept it up until He had regained his speed.
He examined numerous trees and grasses and experimented with them until He was satisfied that no matter where He went in the general area He could make twine and rope. There was no sense in setting up a rope walk as that was more a mechanical thing. He did do a little carving to determine which woods would hold up and to see if they were particularly hard on knife edges. He then lashed together a chair and a small table. There were several types
of wood around and he had burnt out bowls or hollowed areas in all of the different types of wood He had found. He scraped out the charcoal and filled the hollows with boiling water and set them a good distance from camp but not so far away He couldn’t see them.
So far He had seen rabbits and some deer like creatures on the short trip. They weren’t quite the same as He was used to but they were edible enough and tasted the same. The locals had been eating most of these creatures and that meant He could as well. Zach went to sleep that night and dreamed some very pleasant dreams. He awoke thinking about Khrys He couldn’t get her out of his mind all day long. He did manage to keep himself busy however.
He located spider webs and knocked them all down at the first light of day and timed how long each type of spider took to rebuild it’s web. He repeated the same process at the coming of dusk with different spider webs. He figured He had already picked on the other spiders enough and they would not provide accurate information they were already tired. He also made imprints in different types of soil to make sure it was like all other soils He had
dealt with. He found the same rates of decay in footprints with these soils as he had expected. He would have to wait for nasty weather to learn the rest of the footprint information He needed. Although He thought it would be about the same. The local animals had finished off all of the water so the wood wasn’t toxic. All of the drinking animals had been mammalian at least. He didn’t care if it was safe for a bird to drink out of it. They could
usually stand nasty things like strychnine and such.
The wolves and horses had spent most of their time either playing or grazing or hunting. Obviously the horse didn’t have to hunt. All He had to do was throw Zach off of his back. He looked at Tiny pointed a finger at him and laughingly said “Traitor!”
That day He began tasting the vegetation and learning what was and wasn’t edible. He checked to ensure there was an absence of an almond, acid or bitter taste to the various things He tested. He determined which ones the taste could be removed from by boiling. He had started by the end of the day making a mint tea with pine needles thrown in for vitamin c. This place was like most places He had been. DNA allows many different combinations but
certain things always seem to work together. The old root or tuber and leaf combination was present here as well. Generally speaking if the leaf had a all of the main veins radiating out from the attachment point of stem to leaf there was a sizable root or tuber attached. Most those He had found were edible. He had already talked to the locals and knew enough to stay alive but it is a good idea to update ones knowledge from time to time. Having
played around with that for a few days He decided it was time to go hunting. He needed to get some more leather and dry some meat as well. Khrys might like a nice big hind quarter as well. He wasn't quite sure how her husband would receive such a gift and decided He didn't care it wasn't for him anyway. He really hoped that wouldn't even be an issue.
He cleaned his clothes and hung them out to dry the following morning. After they were dry He buried them in some of the local flora and left them to absorb those smells. He got cleaned up and rubbed himself down with pine needles and then stood in the smoke from the fire. Animals encounter that smell quite often and ignore it even though it can mask other smells. He got onto a well used trail and began trotting, after He located some
relatively fresh tracks. The animals were moving rather lazily and appeared to have been browsing as they went. He came upon a small puddle that had been disturbed lately. The mud was beginning to settle in the bottom but had leveled off. This meant that He couldn’t be more than fifteen minutes behind. Fortunately He was traveling against a mild breeze and not with it. That allowed him to keep right on going at about half speed. He knew He was
gaining on them fast as the last puddle He had checked was still completely stirred up. The wolves hadn’t made a single sound the entire time and had stayed back a good distance. He began his customary walk on the balls of his feet but still moved rather fast as He could hear a river coming up and that would help mask his sound. The next puddle He found was still moving ever so slightly. He though time to slow down forty five seconds away. Now He
began to creep forward very slowly and above where they would be.
He knocked an arrow and got a second one ready in his bow hand. Each time
they put their head down to take a drink He would move forward another foot or
so ever so slowly. His first shot dropped two at one time thanks to the power of the long bow and a third was shot on the run. As the two had fallen they had gotten revenge.........a broken arrow. He bled them and sent the wolves back to get Tiny for the trip back to camp. He laughed to himself "Great hides to scrape sinew to make and meat to dry. At least I will have something to keep my mind off of Khrys."
He shook his head all He could do was wait and stay busy. He was making sure the old picnic area was checked for Khrys from time to time. He had left a message for her there to wait for him if He wasn't around. He had originally planned on staying there. There was just too much memory associated with the place and He had found it impossible to be stay.

It dawned a beautiful day....the air was crisp and clean..... the sky stained with all the wonderous colours of a rose garden........ Taking a deep breath of the newness of the morning, Khrys smiled happily.
Walking outside in the early morning light, the wolves had still been there, curled up with each other in Nameless's old stall in the barn. "What's the matter, guys? Didn't you trust Daemon last night?! " laughing as she looked at the quizzical expression on Mercy's face. "I suppose you're right. I do need to talk with Zach. At the verra least to thank him for the deer."
Back in the cottage, she write a note for Daemon telling him that she went riding with wolves to thank Zach for the meat he left. As an after thought she also mentions that she's talked with Jacob, the lad down the road, about getting his things for him from the Inn. She hasn't yet, of course, but she'll do that on her way.
Leaving the note on the table where she's sure he'll find it, she quietly goes out the back to the barn and saddles the horse. He nickers to her softly as she tightens the saddle and halters him. "Shhh... easy now, Boy. We don't to wake Dae, now. He can sleep in this one morning."
Mounting the beautiful animal, she rides out into the dooryard where the wolves are waiting for her. "Okay, guys.... One more thing and then I want you to take me to Zach." With that the four of them took off down the dirt road. As they approached the small holding down the road from the cottage, Jacob came running out.... "Khrys.... "
After talking with Jacob's father and making arrangements for Jacob to get Daemon's few things from the Inn, Khrys rides off, following Judgement and Mercy to the picnic clearing. A note left on a tree tells her that she's supposed to wait there for him. "I think not..... Judgment... where's Zach? Take me to him, Boy." The wolves sniff around the clearing for a moment, then head off to the southeast, with Khrys following right behind on
Emperor.
As she rides into his small camp later in the morning, Khrys can see that he's been verra busy in the last few days. He's built a small survival shelter, and she has to stifle her giggle at the size of the ball of twine she can see by the fire pit. "It looks like he was planning on staying out here a loooong time, 'ey Mercy?!" Looking around his camp, she is impressed with the amount of things that he's done while he was out there......
"Zach...? Are you here?" After waiting for an answer for a long, quiet moment, Khrys sits by the glowing embers in the firepit to wait for him. Rolling the ball of twine around, she can't help but think how much she wished she had brought a book along.

Zach skinned and gutted the three deer and threw them on the back of Tiny when he arrived. After lashing them on he trotted back to camp with Thor and Tiny in tow. On the way back to camp he investigated some sounds he had heard on the way to the hunt. It turned out there were a few highway robbers that were apparently thinking about settling in for a long period of tax collection on the road.
They had rebuilt the towers of an old castle and were well on the way to rebuilding the walls. These guys were really working. He wondered why they could work so hard at this and then turn around and not do honest work. There were about forty of them and three were lifting the possessions of poor travelers at that very moment. They were unarmed and Zach thought about it for a while. “I guess they can have their possessions back after I have had
my fun. Maybe they will have the good sense after this to learn how to defend themselves and buy what they need to do it. I still have a few toys from the old world and I do have lots of pent up aggression. Why not lay it on thick where it really belongs and enjoy myself.” He laughed to himself forty can attack two I guess it is fair for one to attack forty. I will of course even the odds just a bit in my favor.”
It was late afternoon on the third day when he returned to camp. He scraped the hides and hung the deer high in the tree. All of the wolves could be trusted except for Thor. He was a little too independent. He removed a hind quarter and took it to Khrystas cottage, leaving Judgement and Mercy to guard it. When he returned to camp he ate and put the hides in the river to soak overnight so the hair would slip easier when it was time to remove
it. All that absolutely had to be done had already been accomplished.
He pulled out the pack that was buried very deep inside of the huge saddle bags that he put on Tiny. He removed his old CAR shorty with the bloop tube on it. Assembling the upper and lower he hoisted it and felt strange feelings. Holding it again sent his mind racing back through the years to when he was young and still believed in those that were in power in his world. Several summers of training quietly so as not to attract undue attention and
after he was of age, off to see the world with his friends as far as family was concerned.
"Yep! That's right Mom and Dad we are just going to thumb around the country for the summer and then come back and settle down." We came back all right but the jobs were there for us already. All we had to do was apply where they told us to apply. Then there was the occasional “restlessness” that some of us would feel, and we would be between jobs and roaming around. What nobody knew was that we were being taken to other countries to fight wars
that were always denied and lied about. We would return and strangely get our old jobs back. There was the occasional spy assassination that we had to do from time to time, but that never required any of us to quit our jobs. It was always what we called a quickie.
After noticing numerous discrepancies in what we were told, all of us vanished one night agreeing to probably never see each other again. It was the only way we could be certain of our own safety.
Now here he was, lightyears away from all of that. He didn’t miss the feelings he had developed towards his fellow citizens at all. He had started hating them. They all lived their lives without paying any attention to what went on around them. But now he felt sorry for them.
He got ready; verifying that all buckles magazines and faying surfaces were either silenced or oiled and operating smoothly. He had his face painted and his fatigues on and was gone before it was fully dark. He had left Thor and the horses at the camp. After jumping up and down a couple of times and locating all noise sources, he took off at an easy trot. As he was carrying a light load, it didn't take too long to arrive at his destination.
There was a low ridge and he aproached on the castle side of it. None of the spider webs had been broken lately at all. That meant no regular patrols. It was getting dark and he was getting the things all over him. He hated it you never know which ones had a dangerous nasty that could get you, especially in the dark. He slept on the ground and was up just as the sun was starting to lighten the sky. Nothing had changed in the morning there were
still only two sentries, and they looked like they were asleep. Leaning against the wall, but asleep nonetheless.
All of the robbers were gathered around a pile of brush heckling one of their own who was trying to get a fire started. Thinking only briefly he seized the moment and went around to the front gate which wasn't even finished. There were two guards there. He decided to really enjoy this, and pulled his suppressed pistol out and popped both of them in the head. It sounded like two pots wrapped in cloth clanging together. They dropped instantly
and he was already rounding the corner.
"Kochem obrazhem! Having trouble getting your fire started? Try this!" With that he picked up the CAR and pulled the trigger on the bloop tube. "Nothing like my old buddy willy peter to warm ye on cold night!" The brush pile exploded into flames upon impact. He was ready with the next round and launched an HE into the wall nearest him. When the wall collapsed he had their full attention. They were so shocked at people dropping like flies after
getting hit in the helmet by nothing. By walls breaking and fires starting because of some green guy with a really bad attitude that nobody even thought to pick up a weapon. The weapons were all leaning against the one finished corner of the castle wall. "Don't you guys want to offer some resistance?" With that they all went for the bows and other assorted weapons against the corner wall.
"That's the way I like it! How about some group therapy.....a little rock an roll from the home boy?" With that he flicked the selector switch to group therapy mode and pulled the trigger. It was over in a few seconds and he was walking away. He really had no use for bullies and always enjoyed correcting them. Everything that had been taken from passersby was left just in case someone returned with help. He was out of ammunition but figured that
the CAR would make a good knife blade if he could find an anvil somewhere.
He took his time going back to camp he was emotionally drained all he could think of was Khrys.........Khrys with someone else. He laughed "Good thing I spent my last rounds." When he arrived in camp Khrys was sitting there waiting for him. He was pleased but could tell she was not feeling too well so they just talked.
As she was leaving he asked her to stop and said, "I hope this means something to you....I love you very much."

Sitting alone in the camp, watching as the wolves romped and played, Khrys waited for him to show. As it approached midday, she grew restless and had just decided to leave a note thanking him for the venison, when something nearly crashed into the camp. At first, she had a difficult time recognizing the thing as a person, let alone as Zachary. He was dressed head to toe in strange green and brown clothing, with small bush branches
sticking out of some sort of helmet. His face was painted green and brown as well, and he was carrying a long metal object the likes of which she had never seen before. He came to a dead stop when he saw her there, and then walked into camp quite calmly. It was almost funny to see. Obviously he had been hiding from someone, but now he just casually strolled in as if he always dressed and looked this way.
She thanked him for the venison and they talked of generalities for a short time. Then she excused herself to go back to the cottage. That was when he said it.......

"I hope this means something to you....I love you very much."

Turning to face him before mounting Emperor, she looked at him standing there. He was wearing the same clothes... but the helmet was on a log bench by the fire pit, and he had washed the green and brown paint from his face. Looking into his eyes, Khrys realized that she loved this man. And now, knowing that she and Daemon were to be divorced, it would be alright to allow herself to feel it.......
Quickly mounting Emperor, she turned to face him again. As she looked again into his eyes, she said the words to him that she knew he wanted to hear.....

"Zach.......... I......... I love you as well..........."

Then she turned to ride quickly back to the cottage. Even though she loved him, she knows in her heart that right now she is unable to deal with what he wants to give her. She knows that what she needs the most right now is time..............

After Khrys rode off Zach cursing pulled his boot knife and stuck
it one and a half inches in a tree about thirty feet away. He realized
from the way she had acted that she would never really be his and her
heart would always be with Dae. Looking down at his CAR he began
packing his things in the saddle bags and getting ready to leave. He
loaded the hides on the back of the horse after finishing them which
was later in the day. Next he loaded all of the venison and headed for
Khryss' cottage. He left the venison the Arabian and all three wolves
at the cottage. He placed a note on the door that briefly read
Knowing you has been the best part of my life. I have never before
felt the warm glow of true love . For that I thank you. I only regret
you were unable to return it. I doubt I shall return. There is far too
much pain here for me to remain. There are people that actually need
me. I go to their aid. Many of them will soon face death on their
knees. I shall teach them how to meet it not on their knees but firmly
on their feet and down the barrel of a blazing gun. De Oppresso Liber!
Zach
He then headed towards town for one last look before heading to
the space port. He saw Khrys and her daughter walking around in the
market. He began to feel tears welling up in his eyes. He had wanted
to say good bye but he knew it would hurt too much, so he turned his
horse and rode away. He felt that he might return in a while. Just to
see the only one he had ever truly loved. But he wouldn't stay unless
she asked him too. As he rode away his heart broke wishing she would
call out to him and ask him to stay. He knew she had seen
him.................she had looked down as their eyes had met. There
had been hope for one brief moment and it had been dashed when she had
looked away.
There was one thing in his mind as he rode away to the space
port. Once again the enemy would be facing him at a point like before
where he had nothing to live for. That makes for a deadly adversary.

Zach rode on in an almost trance like state until the silence was broken by an evil and horrible sound. He almost jumped out of the saddle at the sound. With lightning reflexes he unclipped the right saddle bag and pulled the cover up scowling the entire time. As he did a little furry bug eyed head popped out and then another. He stopped Tiny dropped the flap and calmly walked over to a tree and kicked it. "Owwwwww!" He then began hopping
around like a complete moron and complaining. After a while the pain subsuded and suddenly he collapsed and began to laugh hysterically. He got up after a while and walked over to the offensive saddle bag lifted the cover and to no one in particular and to the contents of the saddle bag in general he shouted "I hate cats!". Then he pulled the two little male tabby cats out and commented "I guess I owe you some thanks. I now have to go back to give
you two idiots to Khrys. I just realized I never kissed her goodbye but that might be because I never kissed her hello. I think I am going to ask her if I can at least have one kiss before I leave."
The trip back to the cottage was shorter or so it seemed. That might have been because he was chatting constantly to his new friends. He recited all of the poetry he had done for Khrys. There were a couple of times that he thought they might have shown some type of expression on those blank faces." He thought that was unlikely however. Kittens and cats in general are just about as expressionless as they could ever be. Suddenly he looked up and
he was arriving in Rhydin. He posted on the cork that Khrys had two more kittens to get rid of.
Then he headed for the cottage so he could put them in the barn where they had fortunately strayed from with his help.

After returning the offending hitch hiking kittens to Khrys's barn, Zach greeted his wolves and the Arabian. Having had more than ample time to be reminded of how much he wanted Khrys to be in his life, he loaded everything back up and left for the old picnic area. He remembered the note he had left on her door earlier and went back to get it. He quite unceremoniuosly ripped it off of the door leaving a small corner attached. With all of that
done he returned to the old memory filled area and waited, hoping she would feel the same pull.
Later that night he watched the challenge match at the battlefield from a hill. As the match was ending he noticed that Khrys had suddenly turned and left Dae standing there, starting off for.... he presumed the cottage. He caught up with her to make sure she made it home safely. He also desperately wanted to talk with her to see if there was a chance for the two of them to be together.
