It had been over a week since AJay's Challenge match...... and everything else that happened. Sighing deeply to herself, Khrys thought that perhaps a change in scenery would do her good. After all, she couldn't keep herself locked up in the Cottage forever, with Zach "standing guard" in her dooryard. Although it was rather amusing to watch as he dealt with everyone that came to offer their sympathies to
her. Sipping her cup of tea in the front window seat, she almost had to laugh at the thought.... 'Sympathies....as if someone were dead.... not merely divorced...'..... Shifting in the window seat, she realized that she had been acting as if she were dead...... Locking herself away from her friends, not seeing anyone at all. Not even responding to mail in most instances.
Yes.... it was definately time to get out of the Cottage and back into the world a bit.
Stretching as she stands, she crosses to the kitchen and starts gathering up cheese, bread, fruit... and of course venison.... for the trip she's been thinking of. A nice long camping trip in the Northern Forests would be just the thing. Mayhaps she might even visit her Mother. With the food bags fully stuffed she crossed the kitchen and out the back door, calling to Zach on her way to the barn.
"Zach... Would you come help me with Emperor, please?" As he came into the barn whistling he saw that she was trying to toss the well loaded saddlebags over the horse's rump.
"Going somewhere, Khrys?" He asked her with a slight bit of hestitancy in his voice as he eyed the loaded bags.
Looking up at him from under the other side of the horse, she gives one last good pull on the girth to tighten it. "No.... we are..... " With emerald eyes twinkling as she stands, " That is if you'll come with me. I'm thinkin' that I might like to go for a visit to my Mother's people, and I'd like for you to come with me." Zach's grin couldn't have been any wider as she moved around the horse and into his arms, leaning up to brush a soft
kiss across his lips.
Taking the heaviest of the bags from her, he crossed to the other stall. "Here, let me put this stuff on Tiny. She can carry all of our things." As he looked at the size and weight of the bags he wondered aloud, "How long are we going to be gone?"
"A few weeks. Mayhaps a month or more." She smiles merrily..."As long as we like."
As he finishes adjusting the packs on Tiny's back, he turns with a lopsided smile, "That's fine. But first I have something I need to do on the way." He whistled for the Arabian, and saddled it quickly. Soon they were on their way, with the wolves frisking ahead on the trail.
As the rode off to the North, Khrys couldn't help but ask.... "Zach.... I know the names of all your animals except for the Arabian... Does it have a name?"
Smiling his lopsided grin once again, Zach laughed as he answered. "I'm glad you asked.... it's name is 'Androgenia'..."

They finally arrived at the location Zach had been looking for. Turning to look at her he asked "Do you want to see something really strange, the likes of which you have never seen?" She gave him a puzzled look and asked what he meant. "Well I came here from a world completely different from this one. In that world we accomplish the same things that are done here, but in a different way. I am not sure really which is the best way, but I feel
that the way here is better." He looked into her eyes. "To develop Magical powers one has to succumb to some sort of self discipline. My world is a technological world and machines are what do the magic. In that case all one has to do is gain control of the machine to have the magic. Quite often the one who has the cunning to gain control is dishonest and abusive. In this cave I have some of those machines.......just what I need to get around should

With that he smiled picked up his sword and rattled it in the scabbard."This place must at all costs remain a secret. If you will promise never to tell of this place I will show you it's wonders and maybe give you a ride in an unusual machine. It moves faster than a bird or a horse. It weighs more and in flight is actually lighter. It is much faster than the
shuttle you rode to Faerun. You can see the Doppler effect in the stars. I have to use sensors to track star locations, stars that are visible to the naked eye become invisible and pulsars which one can't see shift up into the visible range. Stars behind me shift down below infrared and disappear. The faster I go, the shorter the visible range becomes until it becomes a line circling me." He raised his arms up over his head and brought them down to
his sides to show the orientation of the ring he had described. "It is purple to the front, white in the middle and red on the backside"
He had been fumbling with a medallion and looked up at her curious expression and asked, "Can you keep it a secret?". She laughed at him and said "Yes, of course I can keep it a secret. I even understood some of what you said just a moment ago.
He smiled at her and said "Get ready for a shock." As he placed the medallion against an indentation in the stone that was before them, the rough stone melted away. There was a flat almost mirror like stone wall there that matched the medallion in apearance, except for an area where the medallion had fitted. The black mirror stone slowly retracted into the mountain and they entered. All of the animals waited outside, except for the wolves.
Emperor wanted nothing to do with the cave. After they were fully inside, the stone slid back into place. Slowly the walls began to glow a dull reddish purple color, brightening with a light throbbing hum accompanying it. There was a tunnel at the far end of the cave that was a bright white. The entire place was filled with amethyst crystals; some of them were massive. Khrys was awe struck at the beauty. Zach laughed at her "Come with me. Wait till
you see the waterfall it is beautiful. I chose this place because of the crystals. I use them for energy. There is a lot of energy built up in a simple crystal and this place is nothing but crystals."
They walked deeper into the cave and eventualy came to a relatively small chamber that was very high. There was bright white light in this chamber and a waterfall was popping right out of the side of the cave wall and bouncing off of the crystals creating a kaleidascope of light playing and reflecting in the walls. There was a fair amount of soil that had apparently been moved into the floor of this chamber and there were small trees shrubs
and plants growing in it. He picked a fruit off of one of the trees and gave it to Khrys. She tasted it after he nodded that it was OK to eat. She couldn't believe how good it was. It was small and shaped like a gourd but thin skinned and it tasted like a ripe peach. He looked at her and laughed "Nice addition to my cave don't you think? There is a spring close by and I connected to it. This stone here is ignious and impervious to water so I had to
use sympathetic vibration to break down a small tube leading into and out of the cave for drainage. Once I hit the normal soil I had to use a laser to cauterize the soil for the purposes of stability. I had to do the same thng to create air vents and passageways so that bees could get in and out for the plants that I have in here. She was looking at him in disbelief "What are ignious stones, sympathetic vibration and cauterize......in relation to
soil that is? Are those words from your world of technology?" Zach looked at her for a moment and sensing the hoplessness of the situation for the moment he said "Yes! You are very perceptive.". She was pleased with herself and feeling like she was beginning to understand for once. This was the strangest stuff aside from high magic she had ever seen in her life.

As they walked back out into the main cavern, Khrys noticed that the light was now becoming quite bright. Floating just above the water of a large underground lake she could make out a large metal saucer shaped object.... it looked like two shields attached together at the rims. There was a narrow walkway leading out to it.
He looked at her. "Would like to go for a ride in my toy? You might want to wait here while I go and deactivate the sentry. He smiled to her, almost as in challenge... "Unless you have nerves of steel you will run out of here in terror."
"I'm sure that I can handle it. You'll have to tell me what I need to do, though." She looked up at, eyes glinting...and chin raised in defiance, to see him watching her and smiling. For a moment they just watched each other, then Khrys smiled back and nodded as she listened carefully to his instructions.
"First, you need to remember that there is absolutely nothing in this water that is alive except for fish. This walkway can't move under any circumstances whatsoever. All you have to do is hold my hand and ask me questions about what you see and I will answer them for you. Can you promise me that you will do that? No matter how menacing the things you see appear to be?"
"Of course I can do that. Shall we...?" As she motioned a bit nervously to the walkway, she was sure that he could sense the bravado in her voice, for he smiled his lopsided smile as he took her hand to lead her onto the walkway. As they approached the ship there was a rather large swishing sound and the water below her began to swirl. Looking down at the swirling water, all she could see was a huge shadowy form under the water. They were
just under halfway to the ship when it happened....... A huge fanged bony, horn covered head flew out of the water and right into Khrys's face and.... just...... hung there in mid-air. She froze in her tracks for a moment as it looked into her eyes. It had huge green and gold catlike eyes.... and wet slimy breath that stank of dead and rotting flesh. Each time it exhaled she could feel it's cold misty breath on all of her exposed skin.
'Zach said it isn't really there. Ignore it...Ignore it', she thought to herself... 'But it has to be there.. I can * feel it* as well as see it'' As she tried to shake off her fear, she began walking slowly to the ship. The head slowly eased away from her and watched them from a distance of about ten feet. Quickly it was joined by several more of them... all just watching her.... with their huge maws open and stinking of
rotting flesh..... By the time they reached the ship, she was pretty well shaken up.... now there were nearly a dozen of the huge reptilian things. As they approached the ship a door slid quietly open in the side, and Zach led her inside. She smiled gratefully to him. The entire time he had been holding her hand and softly explaining to her that what she was seeing wasn't really there.
He turned around and watched her looking at the doorway warily and said, "Describe them to me. I mean what are you seeing?". As she began describing what she saw he placed his finger upon a small button that was flashing a deep red color. By the time she had finished describing them he could also see them. A dozen horned and fanged heads with saliva dripping from yellow and brown fangs all writhing about in the doorway just trying to get in
but stopped by an invisible force of some sort. "Khrys they aren't really there. Look at me."
As she reluctantly turned away from the doorway to look at him, he pushed the button and deactivated the sentry. She couldn't *feel* them any longer.. they had all dissapeared. Suddenly he let out a blood curdling scream and she jumped into his arms, turning to look at the doorway at the same time. They were still gone.... nothing had sneaked into the ship. She blushed a little because she realized then that he had tricked her into jumping
into his arms.
He gave her a warm hug and laughed, "Sorry I couldn't help myself. I have been wanting to hold you in my arms since I first saw you. I would prefer another kiss however."
Still caught in her blush, but starting to smile, she asked "So you would even resort to scaring me half to death for just that?"
Now he found himself turning red. He felt a little stupid and guilty because she had apparently been pretty shaken by the sentry. "I'm sorry I forget how real the sentry makes things. I didn't mean to scare you that bad. It has been a long time since anything like that has even had an affect on me. If it means anything I am very sorry. Please forgive me." With that he dropped to his knees and looked up at her with his warm brown eyes begging
forgiveness.
"Get up, Zachary Wulfgar, and look me in the eyes. I have something I want to say to you." She watched him as he stood in front of her... hands at her sides and voice suddenly quiet and serious. "Zach..... I love you.... Now.... be quiet and kiss me...."

Leaning back from her and looking into her eyes he smiled and asked "So would you like to go for a little ride, Khrys?". She laughed and said, with her eyes dancing with mischief "Yes. I have to admit I am somewhat curious about your little toy here. It already seems to be full of surprises." "You can't even begin to imagine. Why don't I sit you down in this chair and I can tell a little bit about my world." He motioned toward the weirdest
chair she had ever seen. It was very plush and overstuffed with supports all around it so that it almost wraps around whoever sits in it. There were wide glossy almost metallic looking but flexible straps with buckles and clips all over them. "This is a passenger seat. Mine is a little different as you will soon see. I will be sitting in that one." He pointed at an almost egg shaped gadget that had a hole for head and arms to protrude there were
buttons and lights on the inside edge facing the area where the head would point. There was an almost imperceptible seam where it looked like it might separate. She figured that was how he got into it. That seat was to her left and in front of her seat. It sat out on a protruding area, both seats were on a transparent platform or plate of some sort. There were rails around the edge of the platform they were on which jutted out into a twenty foot in
diameter sphere. Zach's seat was in the very middle or center of the sphere. The door behind them was still open but he had said it would close as soon as he deactivated the shutdown system.
He sat her down in the chair and began fastening her straps and buckles nice and tight. "When my home planet developed this technology you are looking at here it caused a complete breakdown of or economic system. We used to travel around our planet in gas powered vehicles which ran on something that couldn't be replaced. The ability to use this technology you are seeing was around and developed for quite awhile only the military was aware of
it. The people selling the nonrenewable resources were also aware of it as well and they had so much money that they helped keep all of this secret." He pulled a crisscross type of a web belt down over her and tightened it. "Not to tight I hope?" "No... Not really, but is all of this necessary?" "You will see in a moment." he said. "Any way when this technology got out into the open the entire economy was based on the nonrenewable resource and so it
collapsed for a few years. In the long run it was a good thing, but people never deal with change too terribly well. Many people died in the chaos that followed in it's wake. There were some who saw it coming and were ready to make a try at surviving the change but many were just not paying attention. There were many other factors that played in the collapse. I guess the best way to summarize the whole thing is that big change creates chaos because
people are panicky and somewhat stupid when it comes to fear of change." With that he fastened the last buckle and left the room. There was a sudden hissing sound accompanied by various clicking and high pitched whines followed by solid clicks or thuds.
He returned to the room and said with a laugh that sounded almost maniacal "Now it's my turn!". He winked at her and spun around clicked his heels together and said "Komputor! Kochem obrazhom?". "Strausweetzi Zach! Dobry utrah?" Govoreet engleesh! Sparseeba!." "Good morning to you as well. Are you ready to give an impromptu demonstration of your capabilities? You do know how I brag about you." "I think I can handle that Zach. Hop into the
seat and let's let her rip!" With that he moved toward the ebony colored egg shaped chair and it literally flew open soundlessly. He laid himself down in it or so it seemed and was just absorbed by it as the top half slammed down over him locking him in place. All of this happened with no more than whooshing sounds. "I want a full triaxial checkout and calibration. In flight I want Doppler compensation on only the forward and rear sensor arrays. I
would like you to meet my good friend Khrys, if you please. Give her a warm welcome and bear in mind that this is all new to her and don't frighten her too much. I would like her to experience the cave exit with no warning however. You might explain the calibration sequence to her however. That might get her sick."
There was that warm but metallic voice again but it was addressing her this time. "Welcome Khrys. I am a GenTec Bio-interface onboard computer. I operate much the same as the human brain, only I don't have the frontal lobe. The sentry that you experienced entering me with Zach is somewhat similar to the human brain also it is an extension of me as well. Prepare for calibration sequence. Khrys when I tell you to shut your eyes please do it or
you will lose what ever you ate for your last meal." Zach looked back at her "I hope you were listening to that, in a moment navcomp and batcomp will go to visual and you will be able to see everything on the outside of the ship." As he said that the entire room went black as night. A few moments later the walls began to glow and then clarify. After about 30 seconds the entire cave was visible in three hundred and sixty degree vision above below
behind........."Zach this is incredible". He looked back at her and said "Just wait! But close your eyes when you are told. Even I do!".
All at once a red line arced from front to back encircling them completely. Then there was a blue line that went horizontal on the same plane they were sitting on. Then a purple line that went from left to right and once again all around them. All of this took about two seconds and then the purple line turned a bright white the red turned orange and the blue turned green. "Prepare for calibration sequence. Khrys close your eyes. Zach hang
on!" Khrys couldn't help herself she had to see what was going on so she squinted. With absolutely no sense of movement the room spun wildly and came to rest on a different axis. Some of the lines changed back to the original colors with a yellow line next to them but there would be a brief moment and they would change back and the yellow line would disappear. This was repeated several times by the second time Khrys had decided to close her eyes.
After about thirty seconds which seemed like eternity to Khyrs it stopped. "Now it's time for Zach to open his eyes and verify. " Zach opined "I hate this but let's get it over with." "Triaxial calibration sequence complete." Khrys opened her eyes and looked at Zach who was looking right at her and about to burst out laughing. "Pretty neat isn't it?" She looked a little queasy and he just smiled " Let's take her for a ride."
"Open the door so we can leave baby doll!" The door Khrys and Zach had come in through opened up. Khrys's eyes got really wide and asked "How are going to get through that door? This thing is twenty times the size of that door!" Zach asked her do you want it to be so fast you can't see? Or are you really asking? Why am I even asking that question?" He hit himself on the fore head and laughed at her. "Let her see it! Lets do it in speed

In the west the great minds had discovered that matter is ninety nine point nine nine percent nothing and when the point zero one percent something was broken down they discovered more nothing. They realized it all looked like a thought more than anything else. They went to tell this to the
great minds of the east and the great minds of the east looked at them and said "DUH!"." He then burst out laughing and said, "And that's the way it was. Science had for years tried to answer questions of a spiritual nature and religion had attempted to answer scientific questions. Each view had been taken on faith only neither side would admit it. In the end they realized each had held the answers to each other but had been blinded by their own

Leaning back from her and looking into her eyes he smiled and asked "So would you like to go for a little ride, Khrys?". She laughed and said, with her eyes dancing with mischief "Yes. I have to admit I am somewhat curious about your little toy here. It already seems to be full of surprises." "You can't even begin to imagine. Why don't I sit you down in this chair and I can tell a little bit about my world." He motioned toward the weirdest
chair she had ever seen. It was very plush and overstuffed with supports all around it so that it almost wraps around whoever sits in it. There were wide glossy almost metallic looking but flexible straps with buckles and clips all over them. "This is a passenger seat. Mine is a little different as you will soon see. I will be sitting in that one." He pointed at an almost egg shaped gadget that had a hole for head and arms to protrude there were
buttons and lights on the inside edge facing the area where the head would point. There was an almost imperceptible seam where it looked like it might separate. She figured that was how he got into it. That seat was to her left and in front of her seat. It sat out on a protruding area, both seats were on a transparent platform or plate of some sort. There were rails around the edge of the platform they were on which jutted out into a twenty foot in
diameter sphere. Zach's seat was in the very middle or center of the sphere. The door behind them was still open but he had said it would close as soon as he deactivated the shutdown system.
He sat her down in the chair and began fastening her straps and buckles nice and tight. "When my home planet developed this technology you are looking at here it caused a complete breakdown of or economic system. We used to travel around our planet in gas powered vehicles which ran on something that couldn't be replaced. The ability to use this technology you are seeing was around and developed for quite awhile only the military was aware of
it. The people selling the nonrenewable resources were also aware of it as well and they had so much money that they helped keep all of this secret." He pulled a crisscross type of a web belt down over her and tightened it. "Not to tight I hope?" "No... Not really, but is all of this necessary?" "You will see in a moment." he said. "Any way when this technology got out into the open the entire economy was based on the nonrenewable resource and so it
collapsed for a few years. In the long run it was a good thing, but people never deal with change too terribly well. Many people died in the chaos that followed in it's wake. There were some who saw it coming and were ready to make a try at surviving the change but many were just not paying attention. There were many other factors that played in the collapse. I guess the best way to summarize the whole thing is that big change creates chaos because
people are panicky and somewhat stupid when it comes to fear of change." With that he fastened the last buckle and left the room. There was a sudden hissing sound accompanied by various clicking and high pitched whines followed by solid clicks or thuds.
He returned to the room and said with a laugh that sounded almost maniacal "Now it's my turn!". He winked at her and spun around clicked his heels together and said "Komputor! Kochem obrazhom?". "Strausweetzi Zach! Dobry utrah?" Govoreet engleesh! Sparseeba!." "Good morning to you as well. Are you ready to give an impromptu demonstration of your capabilities? You do know how I brag about you." "I think I can handle that Zach. Hop into the
seat and let's let her rip!" With that he moved toward the ebony colored egg shaped chair and it literally flew open soundlessly. He laid himself down in it or so it seemed and was just absorbed by it as the top half slammed down over him locking him in place. All of this happened with no more than whooshing sounds. "I want a full triaxial checkout and calibration. In flight I want Doppler compensation on only the forward and rear sensor arrays. I
would like you to meet my good friend Khrys, if you please. Give her a warm welcome and bear in mind that this is all new to her and don't frighten her too much. I would like her to experience the cave exit with no warning however. You might explain the calibration sequence to her however. That might get her sick."
There was that warm but metallic voice again but it was addressing her this time. "Welcome Khrys. I am a GenTec Bio-interface onboard computer. I operate much the same as the human brain, only I don't have the frontal lobe. The sentry that you experienced entering me with Zach is somewhat similar to the human brain also it is an extension of me as well. Prepare for calibration sequence. Khrys when I tell you to shut your eyes please do it or
you will lose what ever you ate for your last meal." Zach looked back at her "I hope you were listening to that, in a moment navcomp and batcomp will go to visual and you will be able to see everything on the outside of the ship." As he said that the entire room went black as night. A few moments later the walls began to glow and then clarify. After about 30 seconds the entire cave was visible in three hundred and sixty degree vision above below
behind........."Zach this is incredible". He looked back at her and said "Just wait! But close your eyes when you are told. Even I do!".
All at once a red line arced from front to back encircling them completely. Then there was a blue line that went horizontal on the same plane they were sitting on. Then a purple line that went from left to right and once again all around them. All of this took about two seconds and then the purple line turned a bright white the red turned orange and the blue turned green. "Prepare for calibration sequence. Khrys close your eyes. Zach hang
on!" Khrys couldn't help herself she had to see what was going on so she squinted. With absolutely no sense of movement the room spun wildly and came to rest on a different axis. Some of the lines changed back to the original colors with a yellow line next to them but there would be a brief moment and they would change back and the yellow line would disappear. This was repeated several times by the second time Khrys had decided to close her eyes.
After about thirty seconds which seemed like eternity to Khyrs it stopped. "Now it's time for Zach to open his eyes and verify. " Zach opined "I hate this but let's get it over with." "Triaxial calibration sequence complete." Khrys opened her eyes and looked at Zach who was looking right at her and about to burst out laughing. "Pretty neat isn't it?" She looked a little queasy and he just smiled " Let's take her for a ride."
"Open the door so we can leave baby doll!" The door Khrys and Zach had come in through opened up. Khrys's eyes got really wide and asked "How are going to get through that door? This thing is twenty times the size of that door!" Zach asked her do you want it to be so fast you can't see? Or are you really asking? Why am I even asking that question?" He hit himself on the fore head and laughed at her. "Let her see it! Lets do it in speed
increases that happen in geometric progression with a full stop on the outside equidistant to the door. I want a full time lapse of ten seconds. I want full cloaking outside as well." He looked back at her and said "You did pretty good with the sentry, let's see how you do with this." He laughed “No way! However if you would like we could go visit some of my old friends from that world. I would like to see how they are doing if you don’t mind. We are all old soldiers so you have to remember that with them in the word friends all you have to do is take out the r and you have fiends. We never go around starting trouble but we do have a nasty tendency to finish it however. We are going to be passing up a sond in a few minutes or
so." The metallic voice cut in to the conversation, “78 seconds to be exact.”
“Thank you for being exact. Is there something for you to do a calibration run on for the beam transmitter?” The computer replied “I already did that and it was right on target no adjustments required.”
“Good! Do this S.O.P.!” The response was immediate “All passive systems active batcomp full up all weapons charged and ready.” A few moments later some letters appeared out in front of them in large red print just hanging there against the stars. Khrys could not make any sense of them however. There was a Kp an ' á ' chbl, a backwards N with two dots over it and another word she also didn’t recognize but could pronounce “Pacbet?”.
“It is a dead language on our planet. The language of a nation that outsmarted itself. They forget the words of one of their own leaders. 'Quantity has it’s own quality' . They made a deal with a nation that had a massive number of troops and they worked on the technological end of the military. In the long run because they were stealing their technology rather than developing it they were always behind the curve and were over run by the large
numbers. That happened when the tide turned in the war they both started against the developers and feeders of our world, they then turned on each other. What that says up there is kraznye rasvyet it means 'red dawn' and that means we or shall I say I am invited to a party. First we will make sure it isn’t a trap”
The screen in front of them was no longer looking like a tunnel it was shifting and looking like a curving tube. “In case you are wondering why the stars are looking like they are, we are currently emulating the flight path of a massed vehicle. We are a massed vehicle but shielded. It took us a while to develop this technique but it was required. Only a complete idiot would do it so it is quite often assumed to be a computer glitch when it is
picked up as it makes no sense at all. After message pickup you will see how it can really turn when we EVA outah here.” After a few seconds it turned into a straight tunnel again. “Message sent!” the metallic voice said. “That’s a ten for sure.” The same curve feeling happened again and once again he could hear Khrysta shifting in her seat. He looked back at her and laughed “Just wait! You are going to love this.” Slowly the tunnel straightened
out again. “If positive response received with attached code proceed to coordinates given and full stop at that location. I want heads up on coordinates and code in English this time, plot the spot as well. Do not activate EVA procedure for ten minutes out snake it nice and lazy. ” The response was quite quick and cold again “Roger Zach!”.
“Khrys when we make the straight run for the location I will show you the Doppler effect I was talking about earlier. Right now we are flying in a way that makes us look out of control or impossible.”
Again the metallic voice “Coordinates locked. Code verified.”. A red dot appeared to the upper right of the room and moved all over the place as they continued to hurtle through space. The coordinates remained stationary, however all of the movement was getting to Khrys so she looked down and closed her eyes for a while. Looking back at Khrys he said “That’s our destination.” After ten minutes the computer said “No blackouts noted. Initiating
EVA in ten seconds. Khrys you might want to close your eyes for this as well.” This time Khrys noted that the computer had a more friendly and warm sound to it again. She decided it would be a good idea to close her eyes as suggested this time. Zach said to the computer “When you have us a good distance away I would like a full stop.” “Roger Zach!” After a few minutes the computer announced a full stop and told them they could open their eyes again.
When she opened her eyes all of the stars were just hanging there motionless against a black velvet background. The colors were absolutely stunning to her.
“Ok! Begin accelerating but do it in increments of ten till we hit top speed. Hold the speed at each level for five seconds. Starting now with Doppler compensation as before.” The red dot rotated around until it was directly in front of them and then the stars all jumped and a black circle with no stars appeared in front of them. There were stars in the middle of the circle and around it but there was a great big ring of darkness. There was
the blue and purple color that Zach had mentioned to her. She looked behind her and saw the red. Suddenly the band of darkness got larger and each five seconds it got bigger until there was only a five degree ring around them with a circle of visible stars in front and in back. “When we arrive I want a full stop with a ten second warning.” “That will be in about twenty minutes Zach!” “Thank you!” During the twenty minute wait Khrys reminded him of
the horses and wolves. He told her they had only been gone for about four hours and would be back before eight had passed. “Ten second warning!” Zach stopped talking and then said “Countdown from five please!” “Five....four....three” Zach turned around to look at Khrys for the remainder of the countdown “...two...one”. All of the stars stopped and froze in space and Khrys lurched foward in her seat and then blushed realizing that she had done it not
the stop. Zach laughed at her and smiled, “Sorry I just had to watch.”
He turned around and waited for the computer to announce that a connection had been made and codes verified. “Descend to base” he said. “Well I hope you don’t hate these guys too much. I will be taking us back and possibly returning based on what they have to say. I will not be staying away permanently however. At least not unless you want to stay with me.”

The ship was once again filled with various sounds hatchways were opening various gadgets were being deployed. Khrysta looked below her through the floor and she could see the land coming up to meet them. It was a planet much like Rhydin lots of trees and streams and mountains. All of a sudden the hemisphere below the floor turned sky blue and when she looked up she could see that they were flying upside down . In about five minutes they
were over a meadow. There were lights ringing the entire area and several other ships just like Zachs were there as well. The ship slowly drifted upside down and came to a rest in the meadow. As soon as the ship stopped, everything in the ship reversed, the floor became the ceiling and the ceiling became the floor.
Zach removed himself from his chair after saying something to the computer about activating field dampers. He came over to Khrys and asked her how she liked the ride. She said it was a little faster than she had expected. Then there was the sound of a hatch opening and heavy boots walking up behind her. “Zach
how are you doing? I haven’t seen you in a long time. Wow! Who is the babe and where did you get her?”
Zach looked the guy straight in the eyes and with rancor said “You haven’t changed a bit have you Greg! This is Khrysta and I have every intention of marrying her. You will address her with a proper amount of respect. She is hopefully the future wife of a superior officer or have you forgotten that as well as your manners?” Khrys looked up at him she had never heard Zach address anyone in this hostile of a manner. “I can see that you still have
the moral fiber of a rodent and still don’t know how to salute.” Then Zach started laughing they gave each other a hug. “Greg what is going on that I am needed for?” He asked as he helped Khrys extricate herself from the huge strap laden chair.
Greg told him in a very serious tone “We don’t need you yet. We just want to know you will be ready when we need you. They are ready to win back their freedom and will need training in survival and guerrilla tactics. Right now they are learning command structure and getting basic training. We don’t need you for
about two months. We also want you to do all of the speech things you so love to do. Your speeches kept us alive and motivated in the darkest hours but we hated it when we had to listen.” Zach nodded as he listened and then said “Well they also need to know what to expect when they win. Human nature is pathetic and the
cycle will be repeated no matter what they do. I will lecture them on that one.”
Zach grabbed Khrys’s hand and asked her “Want to go review the troops with me?” Khrys just nodded and off they all went with Greg and Zach swapping old war stories. Zach noticed the stories were bothering Khrys and told Greg maybe they should talk about all of that later.
“Greg where is the old man? I haven’t seen him in a long time to say the least.”
“He is around we will run into him before you leave. He hasn’t changed a bit either.” All of a sudden they heard a very gruff voice that grated on Khrysta's kinder side “STOITYE!”. Both Greg, Zach and Khrys froze in their tracks. Zach and Greg
turned and saluted and in unison said “Dar ser!”. “At ease! Just when did you start saluting Greg?” Greg smiled and said quite at ease “Just now sir! I think it has something to do with the lecture in manners that Uncle Zach just gave me.” Zach looked over at Greg and said with a smile “By the way I strongly suggest you quit looking at Khrys that way or I will fix it so that you no longer have those urges.” After he said that he waggled his eyebrows
at Greg who was now totally embarrassed and found a reason to do something anywhere else.
The General started laughing at the whole interchange “Well Zach pleasant as always.”. Zach shrugged his shoulders and said “I do try sir I do try.”. They both had a laugh over the whole thing and then Zach introduced Khrys to the General. The General was quite personable as far as Khrys was concerned. He looked at Zach as a proud father might look at his son and said “Zach I think I still have something of yours that you will be needing
soon?”. Zach looked puzzled for a moment and then his eyes lit up and he said “That’s right I do believe you do.” The General said “I’ll be right back.” Several minutes later he returned and handed a small box to Zach and said “I know everything is in order. I’m quite happy for you.
Congratulations!” Zach turned a little red and said “I’ll explain a little later Khrys.”.
“Thanks for keeping it for me all of these years. To tell you the truth I was beginning to think I would never need it. I take it the OPORDS are on this disk also?” The General smiled and said yes they are. We won't be needing you for at least a month but do a flyby at that point and check.”
Zach and Khrys looked the troops over for a few minutes. Zach could already see which ones were going to provide the most entertainment. It is always the really big ones that are used to getting by on size that are the most fun. Then he looked at Khrys and said “I think the horses might be getting a little restless by now so we better get back.” They said good-bye to everyone and got on the ship to head for home.
“Computer back off on the dampers while I strap Khrys in. We are going back to Rhydin . Khrys could you keep this safe for me?” He opened the little box and pulled out a ring which he placed on her finger. It had a heart shaped ruby surrounded by diamonds. The whole thing was made out of gold. Her eyes lit up when she saw it. “Zach I would be honored to keep it for you. Did you mean what you were telling Greg about marrying me?”

“He is around we will run into him before you leave. He hasn’t changed a bit either.” All of a sudden they heard a very gruff voice that grated on Khrysta's kinder side “STOITYE!”. Both Greg, Zach and Khrys froze in their tracks. Zach and Greg
turned and saluted and in unison said “Dar ser!”. “At ease! Just when did you start saluting Greg?” Greg smiled and said quite at ease “Just now sir! I think it has something to do with the lecture in manners that Uncle Zach just gave me.” Zach looked over at Greg and said with a smile “By the way I strongly suggest you quit looking at Khrys that way or I will fix it so that you no longer have those urges.” After he said that he waggled his eyebrows
at Greg who was now totally embarrassed and found a reason to do something anywhere else.
The General started laughing at the whole interchange “Well Zach pleasant as always.”. Zach shrugged his shoulders and said “I do try sir I do try.”. They both had a laugh over the whole thing and then Zach introduced Khrys to the General. The General was quite personable as far as Khrys was concerned. He looked at Zach as a proud father might look at his son and said “Zach I think I still have something of yours that you will be needing
soon?”. Zach looked puzzled for a moment and then his eyes lit up and he said “That’s right I do believe you do.” The General said “I’ll be right back.” Several minutes later he returned and handed a small box to Zach and said “I know everything is in order. I’m quite happy for you.
Congratulations!” Zach turned a little red and said “I’ll explain a little later Khrys.”.
“Thanks for keeping it for me all of these years. To tell you the truth I was beginning to think I would never need it. I take it the OPORDS are on this disk also?” The General smiled and said yes they are. We won't be needing you for at least a month but do a flyby at that point and check.”
Zach and Khrys looked the troops over for a few minutes. Zach could already see which ones were going to provide the most entertainment. It is always the really big ones that are used to getting by on size that are the most fun. Then he looked at Khrys and said “I think the horses might be getting a little restless by now so we better get back.” They said good-bye to everyone and got on the ship to head for home.
“Computer back off on the dampers while I strap Khrys in. We are going back to Rhydin . Khrys could you keep this safe for me?” He opened the little box and pulled out a ring which he placed on her finger. It had a heart shaped ruby surrounded by diamonds. The whole thing was made out of gold. Her eyes lit up when she saw it. “Zach I would be honored to keep it for you. Did you mean what you were telling Greg about marrying me?”

Zach turned and looked at Khrys turning a little red and said "Boy do I feel stupid! I guess I could have been a little more romantic than threatening to kick Greg's butt and letting you over hear it. Yes! I was serious about wanting to marry you. I have never really felt this way about anybody before.". Khrys looked up at him and felt amazed at the awkwardness of the situation. Zach was asking her to marry him and she was strapped into a
chair. Once again Zach sensed the complete silliness of the situation and started to laugh. He got down on one knee next to the chair and said very seriously "Khrys will you marry me? I love you more than any person I have known in my entire life. I will do everything I can to take care of you, I shall cherish every moment we spend together and apart. To have you be mine will warm the darkest of moments in my life. I love you!". He reached up and
held the ring she was looking down at and toying with. "That ring was my mothers. It is the only thing I have from my entire family. They are all gone. The General kept it for me all of these years knowing I would want it for a wedding ring someday."

Khrys looked at him for a moment and then sweetly asked him to help her out of her seat.
"I'm sorry." He said with a very awkward and shaky voice. She watched with a slight smile as he fumbled with the straps and buckles..... trying to get her undone. After what seemed more than just a few minutes, she moved his hands away and finished the job. Standing, she looked into his eyes as she held his face with both of her hands...... Looking into his warm brown eyes, she smiled and answered him........."Yes,
Zach.... I would love to marry you, but I do have a question for you." Laughingly she asked him, "How is it that you can do all of those things you do and then completely fall to pieces asking a simple question such as *Will you marry me?*. I already told you I loved you. What more did you need?"
As the look on his face turned into a sheepish smile, he laughed and shrugged his shoulders. "I dunno. I do have to say it feels like it's been two days since I asked you to marry me. Time sure slowed down while I waited for your answer."
Khrys stepped up to him, brushing a soft kiss across his lips. As he held her in a warm and tight embrace, she deepened the kiss...reflecting the love and passion she felt for him. After breaking the kiss, they stood there for quite awhile just holding each other in a warm embrace when there was a knock on the doorway. Zach backed up smiled at her and said "Hold that thought."
Opening the doorway he had a brief discussion with someone. When he was through he moved her back into her chair, this time fastening only one of the straps. As they were leaving the planet, Zach told the computer to give full Doppler compensation because he wanted her to see how beautiful it really is out in space. He also told the computer to move her seat up next to his. although this was done at an alarming speed, she never felt it happen.
It was just..... done......
"Take us home to RhyDin, computer old friend. I would also like tethers released." Khrys looked over at him. "What?". He laughed at her "I thought you might like to try kissing in total weightlessness. You know zero gee Woooowieeee ! We can do a space walk and never leave the ship." She smiled suspiciously at him, eyes sparkling, "That does sound..... mmmm..... different."
She knew as she began to float up from her seat a bit that the computer had shut down the field dampers. She was being held down by only the one strap. As they left the star system, they unstrapped, meeting with another deep kiss. The two spent the rest of the trip home floating in each others arms, as the Heavens sped by unnoticed..............

It was dark when Zach and Khrys returned, happy inductees into the million plus miles high club, so Zach used the IR spectra sensors. All of the animals were doing just fine and didn't even worry when they eased back into the cave that night. They spent the night next to the waterfall sleeping in each others arms. When they got up the next morning they picked some fruit off of the trees for the trip to Khrys's people.
As they rode along Khrys explained a little bit about her people. Zach cut in and said "This is the first time I have been taken to meet the parents." Khrys looked at him and said, "You will only be able to meet my mother. My people killed my father. They executed him for the *Crime* of fathering a child with my mother." Zach spun around in his saddle and said "You are taking me to meet these nice people? What did I do to you?" He quickly
fumbled around in his saddle bag and pulled out a few strange looking things all black and green and metal. She watched in mild amusement as he assured himself that he was ready for anything. Just as he seemed to be settling back down she asked "Well are you ready to take on the world or finish listening now ?". He said "There is more?" raising his eyebrows as he said it. "Yes.... There is more. My mother's father was the chieftan, the King if you
will, of these people. He died when I was eleven. My mother left me to fulfill her responsibilities to the kingdom and is now the leader of these elves. Because of who my father was, I am considered an outsider, even though I am Selyne's daughter. You don't have to worry about anything. My people have always treated others wil kindness and respect, as long as their laws are obeyed in their lands. I'm certain it will be the same with us. We will
be welcomed as outsiders and treated as such."
Zach just said "Oh!" She could barely contain herself this was a side of him she had just begun to know and wanted to know a little more about him. Stifling a laugh she said "Zach I don't know if you have noticed but I don't eat meat." He had sort of wondered and looked around at her and asked "Khrys, so you mean to tell me I'm not allowed to eat anything but vegetables anymore?" Khrys smiled to herself inside and looked at him and asked in a
very direct manner, "Is this too much to ask?". Zach turned around in his saddle and facing forward said "No! not at all dear.". She smiled to herself at his reaction. He was becoming a little concerned with his own behavior. I am becoming a total wimp, he thought to himself. He looked back around at her and seeing once again how sweet and beautiful she was as she just smiled at him, he understood why.
As they rode along during the day he had noticed that the forest was changing. It was becoming more robust and healthy. It was one of the most beautiful forests he had ever seen. He asked Khrys if it was the work of the Elves and she said it was. He told her that they had had similar people on his world but they had been almost
rubbed out and dubbed as inferior. Then everybody realized they really had more to offer than they had originally thought. "Just about everything I will be teaching those nice recruits is from those people. At least I get to teach the good people and not the rotten ones." Khrys looked at him and asked what he meant. "Well anytime there is a resistance movement there is hidden within that movement a bunch of scum that are King wannabes. They are
the ones that would subjugate everybody just like the ones they want to over throw. Those people are always taught really bad habits and given a sound philosophy for doing it that way. People like that can never be given a chance to gain a foothold they must be used but never allowed to rule. I am sure it sounds dishonest to you that we would do that but they are lying to us so we are just playing along." Zach paused for a moment and asked her, "Do
you know for sure where we are going?"

Khrys laughed at his question and let him know that all they really had to do was be in the area and they would be found and then led to her mothers place. They were two days into the forest before anything untoward happened. The wolves were acting rather strange as their hackles would go up and then they would begin romping and playing just as happy as can be. "I think they need to be more careful of what they drink. I have never
seen them act this strangely." They sat down to eat a light lunch when they were suddenly surrounded by elves. The wolves acted as if they were old friends so Zach didn't worry about them one bit. He just got up and went out to talk to them. Khrysta went with him to ensure he behaved himself and didn't say the wrong thing. He wasn't too terribly quick to trust strangers at all. His wolves trusted them though, so Zach did as well. They all talked for
quite awhile and Khrys told them who she was and they agreed to see if they could arrange a meeting for her. They all knew of her and weren't too surprised that she had finally come back to see her mother. After she had said why she was there one of the elves had slipped quietly away and didn't return for several hours. When he did return he went to the leader who told Khrys that they were to take her to the village. Along with Zach should he choose
to accompany them.
As they rode along the elves asked many questions about how Zach had come by the wolves. They knew more about wolves than Zach did and Zach knew it. At least it was a starting point and they were talking to him. He found them to be quite friendly and personable. They talked about the forests and he complimented them on how beautiful they had made it. They also told him they would teach him their ways if there was time but they wanted to learn
some of his ways. He told them he would be honored to do that.

As Zach and Khrys entered the elfin village they were taken back by the true splendor of their way of life. The method of house construction was like nothing Zach had ever seen before. The houses were literally grown out of trees. They were taken to their living quarters which were quite some distance up in the trees. Zach asked if they minded if he went to look around and one of the elves asked if he would like a tour with a bit of
explanation. To which Zach exclaimed “Yes ! I most definately want that. I figured these houses would be wet and dank on the inside with mushrooms growing out of the walls but these are really neat.”. Smiling at
Zach and Khrys the elf took Zach to where they were starting a new house. The elf introduced himself as Kala`driel while they were on their way.
There were two ways it turned out for growing these houses. One way was to plant a ring of trees and get them to intertwine creating a hollow base with steps on the inside rather than on the outside. The other was really interesting. The tree was forced or rather convinced to open a crack and the bark would grow inside the crack as it opened up. This would continue until an adequate living space was created. The work was all done by adepts in
nature magic. As they worked on the tree house a green vapor would begin to form and descend from the air above both them and the work area spiraling downward in a counterclockwise rotation. It would coalesce into a complex matrix of what looked almost like gossamer spiderwebs, and the work would be performed through the manipulations of it. As the tree went through the changes they were causing it would grow and almost appear to be animated and
glowing with the strange green color. It took quite some time for it to happen and when the work was complete they were absolutely drained. There was a strange smell in the air during the entire ritual as well it smelled like an old peat bog. The only thing wrong was the fog was green. Zach looked at Khrys and laughed to himself . Then he looked at Khrys again and asked "Is this preindustrial or post industrial fog? The color looks post industrial."
It was at that moment that Kala`driel handed Zach a great big wafer and said "I forgot to give you something to eat. I'm sorry". Zach took a bite and exclaimed "This is incredible I need to talk to you guys. I have a really great marketing scheme. We could go into business together or you could do it yourself. You should share these with the world." Khrys gave his hand a squeeze and when he looked at her she just rolled her eyes and gave him a
stern look. Kala`driel laughed at Khrys and said "That's a normal reaction. Here try one.". Khrys took it and fell in love but still kept her eyes on Zach imploring him not to embarass her. He turned a little red and then got control of himself.

Zach and Khrys after watching the house building were later invited to see her mother. The hall where she worked and lived was stupendous. It had been built or grown using both methods. There was a large hall that had been grown in a spiraling fashion long and winding out of woven saplings that had been intertwined and convinced to grow together. There were some windows as they took the long walk through the great hall. After several apparent
circles Zach couldn’t take it any more so he went over to one of the windows and looked out. They were now quite some distance in the air and the forest floor was way below them. The hall had just straightened out and was entering a much larger open area. There at the end of the great hall was her mother sitting on a dias.
She was quite pretty much like her daughter. There were the same emerald green eyes and long auburn hair, but the mother’s had a sheen of silver on it. By far she was one of the most earthy looking personages he had seen in his life and yet so stately. She asked them both to come forward silently waving with an elegant hand with the long fingers of a philosopher. As they approached he was taken by the appearance of both her and the room it was
as though they were one. It had a huge vaulted cathedral type of ceiling with open walls and or windows that came up just far enough to stop someone from foolishly falling out. Her robes were of a woody kind of a color and nearly flowed up out of the floor to form her willowy attendance. As they approached she stood and walked out to greet them with a gentle familiarity. Khrysta and Selyne grabbed each other and just held each other in a silent
loving and familiar embrace. After what seemed like a long time to Zach they leaned back and looked into each others eyes and commented on how well each other looked.
Selyne then turned and looked at Zach and asked Khrys with a broad and warm smile and who would this be right here. Khrys said this is soon to be my husband his name is Zach. She looked a little uncomfortable telling her this. Zach smiled to himself remembering the powerful sway a parent always holds over the feelings of their own children. Selyne smiled at him seeing that he was noticing this as well. Khrys was a little flustered by the whole
situation so Zach smiled and said "M’lady my name is Zach and Yes I do hope to wed your beautiful and sensitive daughter.". She took his hand graciously and smiled to Khrys and said with a laugh "My and he does say all of the right things at just the right times too now doesn’t he.". Now Zach felt a little uncomfortable so all three of them looked at each other and just started laughing.
She asked them how long they were staying and Khrys told her she wasn’t quite sure and that she had just wanted to see her mother as she hadn’t seen her since she was eleven. Selyne smiled at them and asked "Do you think you will be here long enough for dinner which is being set on the table as we speak?". Khrysta realized that she most likely would be there long enough for dinner said with a laugh "Yes most definitely and probably at least a
week beyond that." They all sat down and had a long and talkative meal. Khrysta and Selyne had amost entire lifetimes to fill each other in on. Zach just listened intently the entire time. As the evening drew to it’s eventual close Zach got the surprise of his life as Selyne looked him right in the eye and asked "Are you going to be bringing them here for training or are you going to do it elsewhere?". Zach was shocked to the core with that question
and looked back at her and sincerely told her "I will not bring the troops any where near this place at all not even on this world. It is their war and not this worlds war and I don’t want them to even know of this place. I will teach them how to regain control over their lives but they will lose it again. I don’t want them to come here and ruin all of this as well.". She smiled at him softly and asked "How is it, one that is so hard, is at the same
time so understanding and gentle?" He laughed and said "Because I can afford to be nice?". She laughed quite a bit at that comment and asked "I wonder if those you are about to teach will see any of this.". He smiled back at her and raising his glass winked at Khrys and said quite proudly "Never!".
Khrys and Zach went back to the tree house that had been set up for them and went to sleep. It was the best sleep either of them had had in a long time and much appreciated.

Zach and Khrys after watching the house building were later invited to see her mother. The hall where she worked and lived was stupendous. It had been built or grown using both methods. There was a large hall that had been grown in a spiraling fashion long and winding out of woven saplings that had been intertwined and convinced to grow together. There were some windows as they took the long walk through the great hall. After several apparent
circles Zach couldn’t take it any more so he went over to one of the windows and looked out. They were now quite some distance in the air and the forest floor was way below them. The hall had just straightened out and was entering a much larger open area. There at the end of the great hall was her mother sitting on a dias.
She was quite pretty much like her daughter. There were the same emerald green eyes and long auburn hair, but the mother’s had a sheen of silver on it. By far she was one of the most earthy looking personages he had seen in his life and yet so stately. She asked them both to come forward silently waving with an elegant hand with the long fingers of a philosopher. As they approached he was taken by the appearance of both her and the room it was
as though they were one. It had a huge vaulted cathedral type of ceiling with open walls and or windows that came up just far enough to stop someone from foolishly falling out. Her robes were of a woody kind of a color and nearly flowed up out of the floor to form her willowy attendance. As they approached she stood and walked out to greet them with a gentle familiarity. Khrysta and Selyne grabbed each other and just held each other in a silent
loving and familiar embrace. After what seemed like a long time to Zach they leaned back and looked into each others eyes and commented on how well each other looked.
Selyne then turned and looked at Zach and asked Khrys with a broad and warm smile and who would this be right here. Khrys said this is soon to be my husband his name is Zach. She looked a little uncomfortable telling her this. Zach smiled to himself remembering the powerful sway a parent always holds over the feelings of their own children. Selyne smiled at him seeing that he was noticing this as well. Khrys was a little flustered by the whole
