~~ For those of you who's skulls are thicker and wits a bit slower, let me offer you this one bit of dueling etiquette that sadly is not otherwise spelled out.

**It is considered 'bad form' to whine about one's opponent using their fanciful skills in the ring. Unless a pre-duel agreement is made bewteen the two for the higher ranked opponent to handicap him/herself to accomodate one who's mastery of the blade falls short of their own. **

I beseech thee, consider the rank of your opponent before the salutes are given and the blades are crossed. There is no reason for such whining in the rings as I have lately seen. And do not assume that your opponent will dull thier skills to match your own when your parries come sluggish or ill spun. Expect greater things from the higher ranks and advance upon them accordingly.

A few words, that I think may help in this discussion. I honestly think very few who whine about using fancies will read this thread, but for those that do, please htink about it.

You want to whine? What do you think you are doing when you whine? Do you expect to get half a point taken off their score? Do you expect the person to feel humiliated? Honestly, I guess we all have a right to whine about what we please...


However, don't be expecting higher ranks to duel you, because they'll have no inclination to hear your whining when they are trying to duel.

I've dueled over a year and a half. I've dueled well over 1100 duels in that time. To date, I have managed to gain only 76 WoL. I have the Rank of Warlord. For that, I have four fancies to use.

You want to duel me?

I don't care what your rank is, if you want to duel me, expect to get everything I've -Earned- coming at you. What I am saying is this.

I -earned- my four fancies. You can expect me to use them, no matter what your rank is. I expect no less from my opponents. If you don't want me using fancies, then don't duel me.

As an eternal commoner let me just say that I could care less about there silly fancies. I'll kick their butt's without fancies, no matter how many they throw at me. I said Bite the bullet and remember it easy to beat a Warlord no matter how big the ego!

This could just turn into an old-school/new-school debate, but given the fact that, as Var said, most of the whiners won't even read this, it's really not going to.
But I can't resist adding my two cents anyway.
I've noticed that lately a lot of the lower ranks are taking on warlords and up. And not just perennial lower-rankers, dueling friends or looking for a challenge or just wanting to duel someone who remembers to move every round. I'm talking new arrivals, whether they're new-school or not. People I've never seen before hopping into the rings with Arena fixtures. And while I've never claimed to be old-school, or know everyone ever to draw a
sword, I'd like to think I know most of the usual duelers. (Although "usual" may be a misplaced adjective, considering who hangs around. <g>)
In any case, I dueled my first warlady when I was a commoner, but I didn't do it until I'd been here..hmm..a year or so, I guess. Point being, I knew what I was getting into, and I didn't whine about the loss, I learned from it. It's an attitude that, like it or not, most first-time visitors just don't share. It takes a while to learn what's going on, from the moves to the strategies to the politics. So, if any of you new arrivals with
penchants for taking on upper ranked duelers are reading this, stop for a second and see if you really want to get in a ring with, say, G. And if you decide to...for the gods' sakes, don't whine. (Or slash. <g>)

Talk Talk Talk....Blah Blah Blah.....The whole time i have participated in the sports of Rhydin there have always been whinners. They all hate 'em cause they aint got 'em. Let it be fancies in Swords, mods in Fists, or advanced spells in Magic. They all hate 'em cause they aint got 'em. Talkin away on a board wont do anything cause with each new generation of duelers comes more whinners. If someone wants to do somethin about it then make
a Dueling Etiquette folder next to or in the Rules of dueling. Announce the new folder to the current duelers and make it visible for the new duelers to come. This is the only way I see this whinning to come to an end.

Greetin's to my enlighten' Swordmsn & Swordslady's,

Well, First of all, what is these fancies you speak of? The talent of certain skills that each one of us brings into the rings? Are you stateing that the one with a lower rank are challengin higher ranks & trying to complain that the skilled swordman must lower his knowledge & skill to theirs... I believe that was your point you are relaying to us.
If that is true, I will look down to those who complain, For they are stupid enough to challenge a swordmans with such talents, then they should deal with it. A true warrior will learn from it or prove that they are actually better than the one they challenge.
I myself like to challenge the ones that earned higher ranks than myself, as my history proves, I earned my rank to Grand Master by duelin the so called best. Yet, if a lower rank does challenge me, I will tell them that It may be best not to & show my pin of Grandmaster to them. If they still want me to accept the challenge, I will be happy to give them my best performance & high regards for their courage. Cause, in time I will know I have
givin them knowledge & skills indirectly so they may be my biggest challenge in the near future.
On another point of reference, I look down to any of the Highly Rank swordsman that request a challenge to a lower rank opponent. How low can you go, to be the best you should defeat the best. Then getting a simple win to advance your silly record or rank. Don't lower our rankin system to worthless fighters, prove your worth, no matter how long it takes to prove you are a skill swordsman... In time you'll respect your self worth with the
knowledge that you did it with honor. As I will restate... Never deny a challenge... & alway challenge the best... but don't cry about it... Hold your head up & learn.
As to a certain Foxy Redhead out there, yea don't cry about it, even though you might look cute doing it. Remember, its just a loss, don't let it get to you & wanting to permantaly injure that person the next time you face that darn good lookin fella in the ring. To all the lower ranks, that G fella, he accepts duels & will not let down on you, but it is a learning experiance & I recommend you to duel him without whining, cause he may not know
it, he's teaching ya some excellent lessons to dueling.

This is a subject that has been fought over since I first set foot in RyDin, and I am willing to bet it's been argued long before then too. I have to agree, if your going to whine about having a warlod use four fancies against you even if your a commoner, remember, that warlord has earned the right to use them, if you don't want to take the chance, then don't duel them.

Very interesting...very, very interesting....

Many of you may know of myself, Walker Boh, from when I frequented this establishment approximately two-thirds of a year ago, and many of will not know me. Perhaps others will know me from my rank in the Duel of Fists, and it is about this sport in relation to the current arguement that I wish to talk about.

Just about before I left, and what I am about to say played a part in my leaving, there was a large outrage in the DoF about this very self-same subject, however, the balance of the opinions were in the opposite direction. Perhaps it is that the duelers of Fist are more willing to duel "pure", and often I have seen Emeralds dueling without using modifiers. The reason for this I can only guess to be is the thought that it allows for a "better" duel
in some way. To me, it is just removing a strategic element from the game.

However, there my opinion had little clout. The most voiciferous in the argument were those of lower ranks, or those that enjoyed dueling without modifiers. Add to the fact that I blundered in posting an article that forever branded me arrogent, and that I had recently used a number of mods to comeback against Glass Ranks, and my opinion was viewed poorly.

No we have this in DoS, once again. There it no doubt that this subject comes up at least twice to three times each year, or once every 2-3 cycles. Perhaps it is a cyclical pattern that arises from a large influx of newer duelers, or a lack of supposed "honor" in the higher ranks. What exactly creates these arguments, I would not know.

However, that point that the Baroness Luthien makes here is valid here, and should be valid any where: If you want to fight someone of a higher rank, don't complain if they use advanced moves on you, or even if they don't want to agree to limiting themselves. If you are not up to it, then find someone of your own rank. If you think that the upper ranks are merely "hiding in cowardice" behind their mods, they have a complete right to. They have
fought/won more fights, and earned it. When you earn, you can do the same thing. And anyways, fights are won and lost on move interactions, so it is entirely feasible for someone of the lowest rank in each sport to beat the Diamond, Overlord, or even Arch-Mage (though I admit, this is incredibly difficult).

So I say to anyone who reads this and whines in the way Luthien described, that I concur with the Baroness. And I concur not just for this sport, but for all of them. Those of higher ranks have earned the right. Live with it and earn it yourself.

Last night, due to lack of open opponents of a similar rank in the arena at a certain time, I agreed to duel a commoner. We compomised that I would use one of my two fancies, in order to even the odds a bit. Although having an extra fancy wouldn't have helped me win this lopsided defeat (5.5 to 2.5 him), I can't help but wish that I hadn't agreed to hold back a fancy - it's a sort of psychological thing. To reiterate what some other
duelers said, if you want to duel a higher rank, don't ask them to tie a hand behind their backs.
