The office was quiet, unceremonious. The Man in the expensive cloak passed the last page across the desk. Luthien took the parchment and scanned the lines down, down, so many words to spell out the singular meaning. At least the last line was clear.

"This marriage is irretrievably broken." it read. She wished the words needed not be so cold. But she had already agreed to the wording. It was all just formality from here..

"You say he already signed.." asked Luthien, absently dog-earing the corner of the page.

"Aye, M'Lady... not yet an hour ago." came the noncommittal response. His tone implying he would become no manner of go-between.

"Right then..." her delayed murmur. She dipped the quill and flattened the parchment, holding a curling edge down with her wrist. The line at the bottom required her name. She found no peace in signing it, though this had been her choice.

X: Luthien Tinuviel.

She passed the parchment and quill back across the desk, rose, and quickly left.

He received the news that the papers had been finalized with a shaking hand. Reaching for the bottle beside him and taking a drink, he read over them once again before setting them on his desk.

Irretrievably broken. One way of putting it, he supposed, although it really wasn't so much broken as simply... gone. Too many hours in his office, too much time trying to hold together the league - not enough time for her. It had become, in truth, nothing more than "Good morning," "Goodbye," "Sorry, didn't mean to wake you."

When they'd finally discussed it, he couldn't even connect with her. It was obvious he was holding her back - and, worse, there were individual pressures on them both to be able to float free. The decision was rather quick, but they'd spent the day together after coming to the conclusion, and it seemed as if a weight had been lifted.

The one thing he knew, now more than ever, was that he was simply not suited for a commitment with someone that needed him, because he just wasn't capable of being there. Now, he sat, alone, in a darkened office, with a bottle, a paper, and a ring of gold sitting alone on the oaken surface of the desk, reflecting the waning rays of the sunset.
