Rather Huma my point was Dal will only lose ta luck.

One duel, winner take all, could be luck by da winning Baron or Warlord.

Simple.

Huma and Steve,

I believe my point on the tournaments was misplaced, and therefore you are correct in your arguments it. Still, I contend: Does a dueler worthy to be a Baron automatically become worthy to fight for being the Overlord? Perhaps I am a bit skewed in my thinking due to the current Overlord and my loyalty to him, but I do not see it as being grounds for worthiness no matter what. And since you seemed to not be convinced by what I said, I guess
this discussion is really going no where.

I guess this discussion really is going no where. If you think that a Baron that, as I believe Hums said, has consitently defeated a whole wide variety of Warlords, plus has a defense, that he is not worthy for a shot at the crown? Certainly he might not be worthy of the title, but he is worthy of the chance. And in a best of 3, Dalamar should be able to handily defeat him, unless he truly is worthy. However, Nameless Baron, if you
wish to hold onto your beliefs that it takes a whole history to make a dueler worthy for even a shot at the Overlord, that is your opinion, and if I cannot sway it, so be it.

The table are turning for this dueler, who for once in his life finds himself agreeing with some older duelers...and even Iain.... If it can happen to me, do not be surprised, and this is to anyone, that more and more duelers will rise to the side that I am taking. This is not a one house matter. This is a whole community matter, and thusly I believe will take a great deal more to put down if the community as a whole has the insight that Iain,
Kalamere, and even Huma and myself have into the actions of the Overlord. If it does not happen, it speaks volumes to the ignorance, or at least the extreme political views, of the community.

Iain, Huma, et al~

I must say this.

Smacking someone one more time than they smack you doth not a good Overlord make.

If no one is ever supposed to use the Test...why was it implemented in the first place?

:: walks purposefully up to the boards ::

I applaud those who have spoken out against the use of the test in the matter indicated by Kalamere and Iain. There are indeed many who feel the same way, indeed many in not just one house who sufferred, but others houses and even duelers not affiliated with houses. At times when I read these things I am reminded of a statement which I shall modify to fit the situation at hand. I am *not* implying that Dalamar or Uziel are evil by my bastardization
of this phrase.

"For impropriety to continue and thrive, it only takes those with honor to stand and do nothing."

Having said that, I am bound by a self imposed goal before I challenge again. This goal I have been working on since I was defeated by the Baron of Balance, namely Daegarth. When it is complete I will step forward with actions not just words. Finally, I hereby publically throw my support behind Kalamere, Evan and ... surprisingly enough Steve. I say surprisingly because Steve and I have had our differences in the past. Adonai, I consider you a friend
and I have never really considered Steve a friend. However, like others more willing to step forward quickly than I was, I must put my honor ahead of friendships. Yes, Dal has the right to do as he will, I stood renegade to Ath, I stood renegade to Dal, this is how I must be true to myself. At times I was the sole Baron not loyal. I am not afraid to be a minority. But again, I dont think I am in this case.

Correct me if I'm mistaken, but didn't Dalamar face General Perrinis Alabaster, the second-place winner in the last Warlord's Tourney, in a single match for the crown but a month or so ago?

Dex,

It's nice to see you post again m'friend. I find your words to be most wise and thank you for them.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sartan,
Dal really had no choice in the matter. He could not use the test of worthiness against the winner of a warlord tournament. He could have used the Best of Three, but only if Perrinis had agreed to it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sid,

Where has anyone, in this thread, sugested that the Test of Worthiness never be used? I don't think it has been, so I find it difficult to see the relevance of your comment. I must, however, answer your question with one of my own.

You ask: If no one is ever supposed to use the Test...why was it implemented in the first place?

To which I must ask you: Why is it called the Test of Worthiness when the challenger's actual worth seems to make so little difference to those who employ it.

Kal~

I said (wrote, whatever) what I did because I don't remember a Challenge where the Test of Worthiness and/or the Overlord him/herself has not been criticised. If you can tell me a time, please do so.

As to your question of worthiness...I suppose worthiness is in the eye of the beholder. But I will tell you this. Every Overlord in their time has had a reason for using the Test at one time or another, but whether it was a good reason or not is for all of us to decide, not for a select few to lord their beliefs over the rest of us.

For example..

In my opinion, using the Test because you question a dueler's integrity, no matter what their duelling prowess is is a lot better reason than simply because somebody asked you to. Other people are perfectly intitled to express their differing belief, but to publicly insult someone on the simple matter that their opinion is different is wrong at best and totally disgusting at worst.

Sidartha:

Once again, our age-old argument rears its head.

You say, "Every Overlord in their time has had a reason for using the Test at one time or another, but whether it was a good reason or not is for all of us to decide, not for a select few to lord their beliefs over the rest of us."

And you are dead wrong. It is for each of us to decide whether it is a good reason, and if we find that it is not, then it is for us to either dismiss the matter as trivial to our code of ethics, or to do something about it.

Do I have to climb to the rafters of the arena and scream at the top of my lungs, "You are free to act as you choose, but you are not free from the possible consequences thereof," before you people grasp this and stop sniffling that it is unfair everytime someone gets challenged for cause?

Yes, that is what happens here. Every Single Time someone is challenged on a point of honor or politics, they and their friends act as if the greatest affront to mankind has occurred, rather than accepting that this is the way things have always been.

Holding a title is a responsibility. There are peole who would like to take that responsibility from you for no reason at all. I'd think, at least, that having someone try to take it from you because of something you did (or didn't do) would be more palatable.

I remain,

It doth seem to me that the Lady Sidartha wast correct. Thou, Laird MacKenzie, and thou, Lord Kalamere, didst both suggest that the use of this "Test of Worthiness" wast in itself an inherently bad thing, when applied against one of the Baron's rank.
If thou dost believe this to be so, then why didst thou nay protest it's exsistance in the last discussion of rulings that didst take place? I do find that a test shouldst be applied based upon integrity, and honor, and the other true talents that do make a ruler, not merely upon one's skill, or one's rank.
If mine daughter, who thou no doubt do know, should this very day make challenge against the Overlord; I wouldst verily expect him to place before her a test of worthiness. For, though she may possess the skill, she hast nay the experience that wouldst make her a fine Overlord, as of yet.
Thou must decided if thou wouldst believe that any shouldst have a clear road to the mantle of leadership, or if it doth truely be a matter of worth based upon each individual that doth make the attempt.
But of course, I am a man who hadst nay lifted my hand against another in more years then there be leaves upon a tree; so what wouldst I know of dueling, eh?

A true measure of a man comes from with-in, nay from with-out.

The Overlord has no business in testing Barons, especially ones that had already had a defense. While I do not agree I wouldn't test, to paraphrase Iain, trash of the streets that somehow made Baron, I would still think long and hard about the consequences of doing such. And add that the possiblity that the Overlord did in just as an attempt to get Billy Ray a ring, and I find the test downright despicable in this case.

I applaud any of you who have come to the support of me and others sharing my opinions. To paraphrase what Dex quoted, to end injustice, the honorable must get off their arses and do something about it. Have honor, have courage, and truly listen to the reasons behind he argument. Don't talk about friendship, don't talk about "inner feelings"*, or "mystical truths"*, or any other nonsense like that. Look to honor and look to reason. Whereas
feelings can fail you, leaving you with no explanation why you tried, if you act honorably and rationally, no one can fault you should you trip up.

Thank you,

<< Billy Ray had made a promise... a vow, if you will... to regain the ring that Evan had defeated Kaprielle to gain. Now perhaps he didn't work as hard as he could have to challenge the Baron, but who are we to say we know what was occupying his time?>>
-Drake

This is incorrect. The only reason Dal had me interceed was because his mind is slightly soft these days and I was supposed ta' interceed a few months back yet he kept fergettin'. I don't want a ring I've already had, Kappy doesn't need me ta' get revenge. I actually had the intention of lettin' Gnort have his shot at Evan instead of takin' the ring.

As for the ToW, *I* feel that %90 of challengers deserve ta' be tested simply fer the fact that it's the Overlord position they're seekin'. The other %10 wouldn't be challenged because the were tourney winners or other technicalities.

Would the ruler of a kindom agree to a challenge by a skillful and gifted apponent with the prize being his kingdom? Nope, unless he thought too much of himself. The point is, the challenger has nothing but peer wins ta' lose and everthin' else ta' gain. The Overlord has nothin' ta' gain but another win and everythin' else ta' lose. Sorry folks, but honor and respect have nothin' ta' do with these challenges when there's nothin' in it fer the OL.
NOW, if the OL got a one month extra free of challenge or somethin' else fer goin' it alone, then it may be worth it, but he\she get's nothin' but the next wanna-be.

As fer respectin' the titles:

Sorry ta' ruffle the feathers of a few of my nobler friends, but 6 out of 10 barons aren't worth the damn title. Most of these kids duel 20-30 matches ta' get the damn 10-11 peer wins. Is that skill?! Does that earn them the right ta' free shots at the overlord?! Anyone with the least bit of skill can win %50 of their matches after reachin' warlord.

Don't ever confuse quantity with quality.

<<Because unlike some, I am firm in my beliefs. A Baron should not be tested by the Overlord. Regardless of the person in question, it is an insult to the RANK, and to the effort required to attain it.>>
-Ian

Well Ian, I seem ta' remember alot of *US* sayin' the same words when Elijah became baron, that it was an insult ta' the rank....or is he the exception ta' the rule? Just because someone is "lucky" enough ta' get a ring doesn't mean he\she is qualified ta' be overlord, or even baron fer that matter. It's an insult ta' the rank of overlord and Baron ta' have people in there that barely know the difference between the hilt and the blade. I've seen
alot worse happen ta' the rank of baron than a few poor schmucks get slapped with the ToW.

PS: If I ever become baron again I'll be renegade, simply because I can get more challenges, poissibly a four person que in one night. Just because I'm renengade won't mean I'm not loyal ta' the OL....strange but true. If I ever challenge fer overlord I *won't* go through with it unless I get tested, and I won't use a renegade baron or champion of my own. I don't think anyone's become OL by beatin' the ToW yet, but I may be wrong, and I'd like ta' be
the first.

Toodles.

Billy:

Your points are well taken, but I still disagree. After all, you may recall that my convictions on this matter are so strong that I stood as Elijah's champion when he challenged Leto Covington - precisely because Leto tested all comers, Baron and Warlord alike. Surely we can all agree that the chance of regaining a Baron ring, at that time, was insufficient cause to align myself with Elijah's goal. In fact, I had publicly stated, and Elijah
was aware, that had he been victorious with my assistance, I would have immediately challenged him in turn.

I will not stand and say that Evan is a prime example of what a Baron in this sport should be. That would be foolish. However, I must also state that I recall one Baron who, upon his earning the title, was no better an example of proper Baronial behaviour than Evan was, and today he, along with yourself and Adeena, symbolizes the very meaning of the word.

I could actually care less how a baron acts as long as it doesn't involve myself. When I talk of worth I'm talking of skill alone....that's all that matters anymore it seems.
