Footprints in the Sand(Daemon)

The albino managed to get away from the responsibilities of ruling Valensa for a little while. There was much more to ruling a land and people then he had originally thought. Luckily Khrysta had requested that Bree come and visit for a few weeks. That would give Daemon a chance to spend some time with Miss Lily.
He hadn't slept since he could remember. Even Khrys had commented that he looked tired. He was. The Albino was exhausted beyond belief. Sleep however would not come to the godling and he found himself at the Arena. There was a presence he could feel, but the Arena always had that effect on him and he disregarded it.
He walked behind the bar and grabbed a bottle of Ol' No.7. Daemon moved to the Annex and sat crosslegged in the Main Ring. The ring in which Jeff had just defended his ring was now raked out. It was necessary to unbelt his swords and he tossed the Scimitar of Knowledge, and his gladius "Sabre" aside in the ring. Taking a long swig of the bottle, Daemon thought he heard someone enter the arena upstairs, but that wasn't uncommon either.
The albino was a familiar enough face, and most would respect the caller's privacy seeing him alone with his bottle. Another large swig and he layed himself out in the sand. Sleep was comming now but there was something amiss. He had left the annex unlit, the only light centering on him from the skylite. He took another hit off the bottle and tried to let the sleep take him. Eyes closed, there was a voice:
"Excussse the intrussssion Lord Daemonnn, my assssociatessss and I were wondering. . ."
"No, I won't officiate a duel for you. The Arena is closed for normal dueling and . . ." Daemon paused, the voice, the hissing sound, it had all been in his head. He listened closely. There wasn't a sound in the annex except for his heart. "Man, I am just too tired. Now I'm even hearing things." he mumbled to himself.
Just then, Daemon felt a presence in the ring with him. He opened his eyes to see three creatures standing over him. They were dressed in flowing robes with high collars. The heads of the creatures made Daemon jump up. Their heads resembled some sort of squid or octopus. An unexpected blast of energy sent Daemon back to the ground. He tried to reach his weapons. A second and third blast of telepathic energy and the Albino was bordering on
unconciousness.
Two of the creatures grabbed the prone warlord while the third began a spell. A fold in the fabric of reality appeared and the Illithids stepped through with their newest toy. All that was left in the annex was a now broken bottle of Ol' No.7, the swordbelt holding the Scimitar of Knowledge, and his Gladius SunBlade, and a few footprints in the sand.

Daemon regained conciousness a short while later. His cloak, boots and elfin chain had been removed, along with the chain which held his callers broach and F.E.S.o.R. pendant. Luckily his daughter now wore the pendant that once belonged to his father.
He looked around to study his new environment. The room was unlit but thanks to his mechanical eye, he could see heat patterns well enough.
It was a small cell 4x4x5. It was a good thing that he had yet to try to stand. There was no door that Daemon could discern. All around him was solid rock. Instinct told him he was deep under ground. There was a feeling of being watched, and the albino now knew better than to ignore it. Then came the voice in his head again.
"I sssee you have woken up. Would you care for something to eat?"
"Yes Master," Daemon replied. "May I please have something to eat."
"Of courssse my pet, but firsst you musst do sssomething for me."
"I will do anything to please you Master."
A section of wall gave way and Daemon crawled from his cell. A blast of energy sent him backwards as he tried to breach the gap.
"I did not tell you, you could come out."
"I'm sorry master, may I please come out so that I might serve you?"
"Thatss better. Yess come to me."
Daemon did not hesitate to move to his master, but he remained on his hands and knees the whole way there. On the floor at the Illithid's feet was a leather collar with a metalic clasp. He focused on the collar and waited for his master's permission before speaking.
"Put it on slave, then you may stand"
Daemon did as he was told and placed the collar around his neck. Slowly he came to his feet. On the wall across the room were a selection of weapons. He was instructed to walk to the rack and chose a weapon. Daemon walked directly to a gladius and reached for it. Holding the weapon at his side, the albino returned to stand before the Illithid once more.

"SStrike at me." The voice in Daemon's head commanded.
"Master, I can not attack you." Daemon replied.
"You would disssobey me then? On your kneess slave." A wave of mental energy began to wash over Daemon
"No Master, I do not wish to disobey you. Please. . ." The pain was such that he dropped the sword and fell to his knees. It lasted until Daemon's breath was shallow and raspy. He was instructed to stand and mustered his remaining strength to move as quickly as possible.
"Pick up the ssword and sswing"
"Yes master." Daemon picked up the weapon. He brought his arm forward in a slashing motion but felt ill as the weapon neared his master. He turned the blade and missed the Illithid before him. Again came the pain but this time a short sharp burst.
"Againnn, and you would do well not to misss me thiss time."
Fighting off nausea, Daemon slashed again. This time he scored a hit on his master's chest. The Illithid was unfazed, but a thin line of blood appeared through Daemon's tunic. A second Illithid entered the room. This one was lacking the high collared attire and a small beak protruded where it's mouth should have been.
"Ssslave, I am in danger. Attack"
Daemon didn't hesitate to respond and it appeared the other Illithid was not going to defend himself. As Daemon brought the gladius high, a thought entered his mind((ego whip)). 'You are nothing but a worthless failure. You are a failure as a duelist, a failure as a husband, and a failure as a father.' The words carried such weight that Daemon couldn't deny their truths. He dropped the weapon and hung his head in shame.
"So this is the albino warrior you desired?" The second Illithid "spoke" to the first. They comunicated telepathically and Daemon was not privy to what was spoken. "With a little training I could make him the finest killing machine ever to enter our arenas"
"Yess" the first Illithid thought. "Thenn we will be rich." He curled the ends of his tentacles in a smile.
"I will be rich. You will be carrion." The true Illithid stuck out at the other with psionic blast that should have crippled him. The first continued to smile as Daemon collapsed on the floor behind the Illithid. This only enraged the true Illithid who lashed out again with a pyschic crush that should have had his opponent on his knees. Daemon entered an epileptic seizure. The first now struck out using his arcane magic's against the Illithid's
psionic powers.
Illithids were never known for their bravery and in the face of his enemy, the true Illithid teleported from the room. Daemon's seizure stopped but he was now nothing more than a broken toy. He had known his associate would try to betray him. He now regreted using his new toy as a bodyguard. He reached down and unclasped the collar from around the albino's neck. This one's mind wouldn't even make a good meal now.

There was an audible "pop" as the true Illithid rentered the chamber. Not wasting any time he sends a volley of psionic attacks at his former associate. Caught unaware and with the link to Daemon removed, the Magician is no match for the Psionisist. Within seconds Daemon's former master is on the ground beside him.
The door to the room opens and two servants of the true Illithid enter. One, a troll, reaches down and picks up Daemon. The second, an orc, picks up anything of value and fills a large sack. When he is sastisfied the chamber is empty, the true Illithid leads his servants back to his quaters.
Inside the Illithid's room waits another creature. The sack is tossed at the creatures feet. The troll places Daemon in a small nook which he covers with a large rock. Then the two servants leave the room for the small chamber that they share. As the Illithid approaches the other creature, it instructs it on what it's next assignment is.

Just after dark the albino enters the gates to Valensa keep. He is greeted by the captain of the guards.
"Lord Daemon, we were begining to worry about you. No one has seen you since yesterday."
"Captain, I appreciate your concern, but it is unnecessary. Now, I do not wish to be disturbed. A matter of grave importance has come up and I must look into a few things. You will place two guards outside the door to my private chambers and allow no one in. Is that understood?"
"My lord, as captain of the guard, would you care to fill me in?"
"No Captain Thomas, I would only care that you follow my orders without question."
"Yes my lord. I will put my best men on it." Captain Thomas snapped a salute and hurried off to rouse his men.
The doppleganger that was Daemon proceeded into the keep and past the kitchens. "Send up a rack of ribs and something to drink as soon as possible." He looked over the kitchen staff. "And you will bring it to me." He indicated one of the serving girls who just happened to be working her first night and had already proven to have two left hands.
"My lord," the head maid spoke up. "Perhaps another girl, Isabella is not fit for serving his lordship."
"Isabella will bring me my supper, or you will BE my supper. Is that clear?"
"Yes my lord." The kitchen was a flurry of movement and by the time he was done and on his way towards his chambers he had in tow a lieutnent and a junior sergeant. The imposter smiled and thought to himself, 'easiest money I've ever made.' Outside his chamber he stopped and turned to his escorts.
"In a short while, Isabella will be bringing up my dinner. She may enter provided you search her for weapons. My dinner should consist of ribs and fixings and a bottle of whiskey. No one else comes in or out. Is that understood?"
"Lord Daemon," the lietenant was bold enough to speak, "what about the Princess Brianna?"
His boldness was awarded with a backhand from the albino's left arm. "NO ONE!"
Daemon's clone shouted then slammed the door closed.
"At least he used his left hand," the junior sergeant remarked.
"Yeah, lucky me. Now shut up and assume your post.' The lieutenant rubbed his cheek. He knew had Daemon swung with his right arm his jaw would most likely have been shattered.

"Daddy.... Daddy.... " Bree's shout echoed through the castle. The young girl raced up the stairs to her father's chamber, only to be stopped by the guards as she moved to knock on the door.
"M'Lady, I'm sorry. We've been left with specific orders from the Lord Daemon. He is to be disturbed by no one this evening."
Bree turned a mirthful eye to one of the young men standing before her. He was one of the newest of the guards..... Thomas's nephew Michael, if she wasn't mistaken, and not much older than she. "Oh? You're new to the castle portion of the guard, aren't you? That order Never applies to me. I'm his daughter, Brianna." In that moment of hesitation she pushed her way past the guards, and opened the door. The two junior officers looked
at each other, each hoping the other would stop her. Bree moved easily with speed and grace into the room beyond. It was empty and the door to the private office her father used beyond, closed. At that moment, hoping to still somehow manage to prevent the wrath of the eccentric master of the house, the guards attempted to stop her from further intrusion.
"M'Lady, please.. he was most specific. He said that this evening he was not to be disturbed by anyone. Even by you. Something weighs heavy on his mind, and he wished to be left alone with the matters at hand."
"BAMM"... The office door slammed against the wall with the sudden force of it's opening. The tall albino stood framed in the doorway. "Lieutenant, what is the meaning of this? Did I or did I NOT leave the strictest of orders with you that even the Princess Brianna was not to be admitted this evening?" The young man's paled at the sight of the raw anger in the other man's face and he instintively moved a step towards the door to the
hall. Daemon's voice froze him instantly, "Stand to when I speak with you." .
Moving with a speed unknown to even his daughter, Daemon crossed the room with upraised right hand to strike the man. Knowing that could easily break the man's jaw or worse, and knowing as well that her father would never strike her, Bree stepped between the two men. With a small, uncertain smile she looked up as her father stopped the swing moments before he struck his daughter. "Daddy? I'm sorry. It was my fault. I just pushed past them.
They know they're never to lay hands on me by your order." Looking down in shame, the girl didn't see the cold look in her father's eye. "I..... I.... ", Taking a deep breath she continued, "I took advantage of that. I am truly sorry. I haven't seen you since early this morning, and I just wanted to say Good Bye to you one last time. Argent and I will be leaving in just a bit for Mom's in RhyDin." She ventured a look up at her father,
followed by a quick kiss on the albino's cheek. "I'll be back in a few weeks."
The silence of the moment grew deafening in the room. Her cheeks flushed with embarassement, as well as pain at the anger and then indifference, of her father. Brianna leaned up to kiss his cheek one last time and then quickly withdrew from the chamber. The two guards followed at her heels, grateful for the opportunity to escape the wrath of the dread Lord Daemon. As she slowly went back down the back stairs she encountered the new kitchen
girl, Isabella, with her father's dinner. "I'd be careful, Isabella. My father is not himself this evening."
As the girl bobbed a slight curtsey to her and quickly headed down the hall to the guarded chamber, Brianna had no idea of how terribly true that was.

Mounted on her dragon Argent, Bree flew south to RhyDin. With tears still in her eyes and hot on her cheeks, she recalled with a crystal clarity she hadn't had before the look in her father's eye, the way he hadn't spoken to her, the angered expression on his face. It hadn't even softened when she kissed him good bye. "Something's wrong with him, Argent. Something's really wrong with him."
Knowing that she was more talking to herself than to him, the large Silver dragon chose not to answer, but to rather let her continue. "I know he's got a lot of things on his mind. I know that sometimes he can get moody with everyone else. But not with me. Daddy's never like that with me. Never. Even when I wanted to move back to RhyDin, he just did it. He moved the whole tribe here, just because I wanted to come back home."
Watching as the countryside vanished behind them in the pale light from the moon, Bree was alone with her thoughts. Argent knew the way to Khrys's from Brianna's thoughts and needed no conscious direction from her, so she ran the encounter (there could be no other word for it, really) with her father over and over in her mind. This was one of the times she wished she had inhereted even a little of her mother's empathic abilities. Maybe then
she could have at least sensed something from her father, instead of feeling like he was just a cold stone wall.
As they landed in the pasture behind the cottage, a thought found it's way into her mind and she smiled bravely. She determined not to tell her mother what had happened. 'Really it was probably nothing. Just stress or something like that. And Mom couldn't do anything about it anyway. And besides, probably whatever it is that's bothering Daddy will be taken care of by the time I get back.'
With that last thought Argent transformed to his elfin form. They crossed the pasture and entered the back door of the cottage, forgetting for the moment Daemon's strange behaviour with her.

"Zach... hurry up. I need to run into town to get this shopping done before Bree gets here.... and YOU need to finish up the final trim work in her bedroom." Standing in the open doorway to the new addition on the back of their cottage, Khrys looks with pride at the bedroom.
"Coming, Sheesh Khrys. She's not even going to be here until later this evening. I have plenty of time." Seeing the look on his wife's face, however, he changed his mind. "Right, Hon. I'll get right on it." With a look of smug satisfaction flitting across her face as she watched him begin his work, Khrys grabbed her bag and headed off to town. There were so many things left to get before Bree arrived. The canopy bed, vanity and dresser
would be arriving later, but she still had to get linens, and curtains, and.... Oh.. she had forgotten that she needed to run to the Arena also. Shards... that's going to throw off the whole day unless she got going now.
Calling back over her shoulder as she nearly ran for the barn, she let Zach know she was leaving. "Hon.... I'm on my way now... I'll be back as soon as I get finished." Only halfway listening to his reply, she saddled Emperor and took off down the small dirt road toward RhyDin Town.
Looking over the linens, unable to decide which pattern her independant and adventursome daughter would like, Khrys decided to buy a set of plain white sheets and pillow shams. Tomorrow, if Bree wanted something different, they could spend the day looking for just the right touches for her room. As the sun started slowly toward the Western Horizion Khrys ran to the arena, hoping to get there before the DoS offices closed. Again she had nearly
forgotten the paperwork for Helix in her rush to get home.
Entering by the back door, she moved swiftly and surely down the tunnel to the Annex and the offices in the rear. The Annex was unlit, and had the feeling of disuse about it since official dueling, other than a challenge or two, had stopped being held here.... the skylight over the center ring, The Ring of Honor, gave little light to dispel the gloom. That wasn't a problem for Khrys. As she skirted the ring, she saw something in the verra
center, partially covered by sand. Looking carefully at it, she could see the two swords laying sheathed and belted in the sand, along with a broken jug... Unable to believe what she saw as truth, Khrys walked out over the sand. The swords, laying there on the sand before her, were as familiar to her as her own face. Mindful to not handle Knowledge directly, she gathered up Daemon's things and cleaned the broken crockery from the sand before
dropping off her papers.
There was no one in the offices, which wasn't really all that unusual, so she left her things in Helix's *IN* box on the desk and made her way out again to the now darkened night.
Taking Knowledge and Sabre with her, she rode Emperor home as quickly as she dared in the darkness. Bree would be here soon. Mayhaps she could tell Khrys what had happened to Dae that would cause him to leave his swords in the Annex. Looking to the Northeast, in the direction of Valensa, a chill worked it's way down her spine, leaving a feeling of chill unease in it's wake.

There was a comotion in the Antechamber and the Doppleganger stood quickly. Using his ESP he evaluted the situation as it was occuring. The guards we're nervous and the girl was undaunted. He moved quickly to the Door and threw it open. After t he altercation he returned to studing the albino's notes on dueling. He wouldn't be able to rely on his ESP in the Arena he would actually have to understand the rules.
The run in with Brianna had left him distracted. There was a second knock at the door. "What now?" he shouted.
"My lord, the serving girl is here with your food."
"Send her in." The imposter turned to watch the door as the serving girl entered. As the door closed behind her, he spoke. "Stop there. Put the tray down." This girl was a bundle of nerves. She placed the tray down a bit to hard and the goblet of whiskey fell over. She immediatey was all appologies.
"Stand up. Leave it there." Isabella stood and shifted nervously. The doppleganger was wearing a patch over his left eye, but still his gaze ran over the serving lass. "Did my men search you before you entered?"
"Yes my lord."
"And did they find anything?"
"No, No my lord."
"You are nervous. I do not believe you. Undress."
"Excuse me my lord?"
"You heard me. Undress or I shall believe you an assassin and kill you where you stand."
After she was completely undressed the imposter ordered his food brought to him. He tore off a rib and insisted that Isabella eat it. She was very nervous and scared by her lord. She had been told he was essentric but that he was always honorable with the ladies. Isabella was only a year older than the Princess.
Daemon's imposter finished he meal as the girl just stood there. He hadn't told her to move and she was to scared to acton her own. He knew he would have to make an appearance in the arena soon. He did have a few hours to kill though. An evli grin curled on his lips.
"Isabella, prepare my bath." The doppleganger laughed as he began to undress and Isabella did as she was told.

"Mom, I'm here. I have someone that I wa...." Her voice trailed off as a large black wolf rounded the corner from the hall. The huge animal growled a soft warning, it's hackles clearly visible in the lamp light. Bree stood her ground. Knowing that this must be one of Zach's wolves, she looked at it, thinking calming thoughts. She approached him slowly, her right hand lowered for him to sniff so that he could see that she was no
threat to his domain. The low growl stopped and he moved to the side to let her pass him, his tail wagging as he recognized her scent to be much like Khrys's. Argent moved swiftly behind Bree, and the wolf's hackles came up quickly again at the scent of this elf that smelled of dragon. Moving to protect the newest addition to his family, Judgement leaped onto Argent's back and began trying to tear at the back of his neck. Having the strength and
reflexes he was born with as a dragon, the elf lightly tossed the large animal to the side in order to protect Bree from attack. In a flurry of snarling rage, Judgement leaped again.... only to be tossed aside again.
"ARGENT.... don't hurt him. He's one of Zach's friends."
The combined commotion of Judgement's snarling and Bree's yelling brought Khrys and Zach from their bedroom. "Judgement.... Still" At the sound of Zach's command, the wolf froze, nearly in mid-leap, snarling fury dieing.
Shaken at the experience, Bree moved into her mother's comforting embrace. "Shhhhh Sweetheart. Everything's alright. Judgement wouldn't have hurt you. He would know you by your scent as belonging here."
Gulping great lungfuls of air, Bree stopped the tears that threatened to flow again. Her parting with her father still weighed heavy in her mind, and she showed of the strain. Smiling weakly, she looked at her mother. "I know that, Mom. He was protecting me from Argent. He thought that he would hurt me."
"Argent? Your dragon?" Looking all around the room, Khrys didn't see any sign of the dragon. Realizing that she must look extremely foolish for looking for the dragon in the kitchen, she turned back to Bree. "Brianna, where IS Argent?"
The young white elf stepped forward, with his hand extended. "You must be Brianna's mother. I'm very pleased to meet you finally."
Taking the hand in hers, she looked into his eyes, and realized that they swirled.... just like a dragons. "Argent?"
"Yes, M'Lady. I am Argent." If a dragon's eyes could be said to twinkle, then Argent's eyes certainly did.

Sitting at the kitchen table, watching as Bree and Argent ate a late supper, Khrys went over in her mind everything that Brianna had told her about Daemon and his strange behaviour. It was obvious that something was wrong with him, but what? It could be nothing more than the combined stress of being the ruler of small country, as well as the Tribal Chieftain for his tribe. She had seen him earlier in the week, and he had looked so
tired. Shaking her head over her cup of tea, Khrys knew that it must be more than that to cause such behaviour with Bree. His Princess, Bree that he would do anything for, give anything to if it were within his power.
Rising from her seat, Khrys brought Daemon's swords from the bedroom. "Bree, I found your father's swords in the sand in the Annex. They were just laying there, with sand kicked over them. A jug of his favorite whiskey was broken nearby." Standing there, holding the sword belt in her hands, she asked "Do you have any idea why your father would have left them there?"
The chair fell behind her as she stood, "He never leaves those anywhere. He even wears them in the castle. They hang on his bedpost at night. He wouldn't go anyplace without them. He certainly wouldn't leave them in the arena." As the three listened to the shock in her voice, and saw the stunned disbelief on her face, they thought again of what she had told them about Daemon's behavior.
Looking over at Zach with a look of grim determination, Khrys spoke softly. "Zach... something is verra wrong with Daemon. We need to find out what."

Zach looked at Khrys and the sword belt that she held. "We have to do something? What do we have to do?" Khrys looked really serious at Zach "He wouldn’t just leave this lying in the arena. This sword is a gift from the Gods. Something is wrong!" Zach reached out to touch the scimitar of knowledge. Khrys pulled the belt away from him. "What? Are you touched in the head? Do you know what would happen to you if you so much as
touched this scimitar?" Zach raised an eyebrow at her. "Is this a trick question or is it a rhetorical question?" He leaned back in his chair and looked at her with a somewhat amused expression on his face.
Khrys was disgusted by his behavior but thinking for a moment she realized that Zach wouldn’t want to appear impressed by anything that had to do with her first husband. "If you touch this you will be knocked across the room by a blast of psionic energy. It will as you say knock you right into the next day."
Zach looked less amused for a moment and looked at the ceiling then at Khrys. "Did you say psionic energy?" Khrys nodded in agreement thinking that he might be starting to understand. A smile started to form on Zachs face for just a moment and it vanished as quickly as it appeared. "I have something that will handle that but I don’t have it with me at the moment."
I have to go to my home world for the day and I will be back later this afternoon. Khrys looked at him and smiled. "Didn’t you get enough of that place when you got blown up?" He got a sarcastic grin on his face and quipped back at her "I thought it was a rather unique experience and I would recommend it to any who haven’t tried it as yet." Then he got a little more serious. "I need to see how they are doing back there. Greg and Cindy are
thinking about relocating here as well. He and I will have to build a house for them and yes we will cheat when we do it. You guys use magic and we do other things. I will bring the psionic damper when I return." With that he leaned down and kissed her good bye for the day.
He went upstairs and stepped through the portal and was on his way. When he arrived on his home world he discovered that elections were getting closer. He watched the various politicians ‘Plying their wares and lying for shares‘ as Greg called it. Zach let out a derisive laugh. "What a bunch of dorks! I guess the election will tell all wont it?"
General Deseret smiled at him "We will probably need you guys again in a few years. If the people read your commentaries on good laws versus bad and all of the other guide lines you set down, these guys wont be around for long. I was wondering if I could get you to write a political column from time to time. Zach grinned back at him. "Oh yeah! I would love that. I don’t think these guys will enjoy it much however."
Zach looked at Greg "Are you and Cindy going to move to Rhydin with us?" Greg nodded an affirmative and saluted as Zach headed out the door. Zach looked back at him "Good! Why don’t we build a great big castle one afternoon and then get completely thrashed." Greg gave him a thumbs up and laughed "It’s a date!" General Deseret smiled at the two of them "Boys to the end."
When he returned to Rhydin he decided to enjoy himself a bit and landed in the yard. He barked his commands as he left the ship and stepped into the grass. As he walked toward the house the ship shrank to about two feet in diameter and floated along behind him. Brianna and Khrys were watching him as it happened. Brianna’s mouth was hanging open, even her white elf friend seemed a little interested in the strange ship as it followed him in
to the cottage and landed on the table.
Zach had a black box with knobs and lights all over it which he held up to Khrys. "Psionic damper. But this needs some work so I can’t use it at the moment." He sat down outside with them and began fiddling with the box until he got it open. He then removed some tools and went to work on it. Khrys looked at him "Are you going to be able to use that soon?" He smiled back at her "Of course!" Khrys sensed amusement on his part but couldn’t
figure out why. "What did you do today Zach?" He looked up from his work and smiled. "I asked Greg and Cindy if they are going to come here and they said they will really soon. I also watched a world getting ready to repeat it’s same mistakes post haste." He laughed at that and continued "I swear those people were born with a silver boot heel in their mouths and the politicians are trying to help them out it right back where we removed it………I guess
time will tell. Hopefully the people read what I wrote. I can tell the politicians didn’t."
He looked up at Khrys and smiled triumphantly "It is fixed. Where are the swords now?" She motioned to the door and he followed her in. There they were hanging in the same spot they had been in the morning when he left. He smiled at her and winked "Technology can do some things that magic can’t as you will soon see." He detached two boxes from the side of the case and looked at Khrys "Are you ready?" She nodded at him quietly. Zach reached
down and pushed a button on the outside of the case. The room was suddenly filled with beautiful music. Everyone looked at Zach and in unison "Is that a psionic damper?" He shook his head and furrowed his brows at them. "No! This is a stereo. I thought we could listen to music while we figure out what to do about the swords." Khrys slapped him on the arm as she realized that he hadn’t actually said that it was a damper. He had merely held the box up
and said ‘Psionic damper. But this needs some work.’
"Now Let’s get down to the bottom of this mystery." He sat back and began to relax "It is much easier to analyze when not tied up in emotional knots."

He sat down outside with them and began fiddling with the box until he got it open.

The albino imposter undressed while the serving girl prepared his bath. A
few thoughts ran through his mind. He used his innate abilities to read Isabella's mind. She was holding back tears, and afraid for the worst. In her mind she was in denial about what was happening. Naked, he approached her.
"Isabella, thank you. You may go now. I need to relax."
"Yes my lord, thank you." Isabella grabed her clothes and ran out.
Daemon's imposter left shortly after for the arena. The guards outside his door had changed. Two younger men whose names he didn't waste the time to find out. "You two are with me, let's go." He realized they were confused and that the real Daemon probably never took escorts anywhere. Getting to the arena even one of the customers commented.
The dueling went well although the real Daemon's ex wife came in for a while. Even the one he was dueling must have known something was out of the ordinary. He used one of his guards long swords and was comfortable enough with it. He had searched Daemon's whole room and hadn't found a single weapon. Surely the albino didn't duel with the long knife that was kept in his boot.
After his duel he left for a while to avoid any unwanted run ins with 'friends'. He had found Daemon's work attire, and put the cloak on over it before returning to the arena. Everything was going well enough till Daemon's ex showed up again. This woman would not leave him alone. When a man walked in and she sat on his lap, PseudoDaemon figured that would be the end of it.
No such luck, the man said hello, to which Daemon nodded a reply. Then his ex brought over a bottle of whiskey. He had one of the guards taste it, and although the man didn't fall over, the look on his face was enough to keep the imposter from touching the stuff. He called a number of matches making sure to recognize each dueler as they entered and when their fight was over. He could feel the man and woman almost studying him.
These two would be a problem. Before leaving, Khrysta told him to stop by the cottage because she had something of his. He told her he'd send a man, to which she said fine but still invited him over to see his daughter. God's Teeth, was there no getting away from this woman. The couple left, he absently waved to them trying to concentrate on his last duel. When it was over, he made his way out the staff entrance with his guards in tow.
Back at Valensa Keep he told the guards to send up replacements and to get some rest. He left a message for Captain Thomas to come see him in the morning. With guards outside his door, he latched and bolted it. He closed the windows in the room drawing the curtains tight. He released the form that was Daemon and removed the eyepatch and clothing. Finally able to relax, the doppleganger went straight to sleep. It seemed like he had just closed
his eyes and there was a knock at the door.
"My Lord, you wished to see me?" Captain Thomas was asking.
"Yes, one moment. Could you send down to the kitchen for my breakfast. And tell them Isabella is to bring it to me."
"Very well my lord, but Isabella is no longer on the castle staff."
"What? Yesterday was her first day and today she is gone." The would be albino opened the door. "I knew it. She was an assassin. Find her and bring her back here, alive."
"My lord?" the captain was visably confused. "I beg your pardon, Isabella was a child, she has only a year on your daughter. She couldn't be an assassin. As far as I know she is as pure as the winter snow. Or at least she was." The last slipped out before Captain Thomas could stop himself.
The Doppleganger let the statement pass without commenting on it. "Captain, I need you to send someone to Rhydin. To my ex-wife's house, she has something of mine."
"Then we do not need to go after Isabella?"
"You will track her down personally Captain Thomas."
"Yes my lord, is there anything else?"
"My breakfast, and send the royal scribe up."

"Zach.... I'm worried about him."
"Who?"
Khrys rolled over onto her side to face him, propping her head on one hand. "Daemon. He was acting so strangely tonight."
Zach yawned sleepily, murmuring softly, "How so, Love?"
"Just little things really. Like the longsword. He never used to use one."
Zach interrupted her train of thought with an explanation for that. "Khrys, you have his other swords. He probably just didn't have anything else to use." Zach hoped that she would be satisfied by that explanation. He wanted to get some sleep and didn't really want to think about her ex-husband at all, especially while trying to go to sleep.
Nodding her agreement, she continued. "That's probably true, but the question there is 'Why do I have his other swords'? What did he leave them in the Annex for? And there were other things too. Did I tell you he had one of his guards *taste* the JD I took him earlier in the evening? And then he didn't even drink it. It's almost as if he thought I might poison him or something."
Reaching a reassuring hand to her, Zach yawned once again. "Hon, I'm sure it wasn't that. He is the ruler of that little country up north. Maybe someone threatened him or something. Right now I would like to take him a special drink just so I could get some sleep." He tried to smile but gave up as he was just too tired.
Khrys looked at him for a long moment before dismissing what he had said as a poor jest. "Well, then how do you explain his behaviour with everyone? Hmmm? He ignored people that are his friends. He didn't even seem to know some of them." Khrys sat up on the large canopy bed and crossed her arms around her knees. "You have to admit that was verra strange."
Sighing as he stiffled another yawn, Zach turned over on his back to stretch out. It was obvious that Khrys wanted to talk about this. It was equally as obvious that he wasn't going to get any sleep until they did. "Honey, listen. IF someone has threatened him, that would account for all of it. The guards. The tasting of the drink. Even his leaving the swords in the Annex. Something may have happened there, and he wasn't able to go back
to get them."
Shaking her head as she thought for a moment, Khrys forced herself to relax and look at it calmly. Zach was probably right. There was certainly a logical explanation for everything. She opened her eyes and looked at him, "But why didn't he ask me if the *things* of his that I have are his swords, since he's missing them?"
"Maybe he didn't want to talk about them in the crowd in the Arena. Khrys, look at it like this. IF there's been a threat against him, the last thing he would want anyone to know is that he doesn't have his weapons. From what I understand from Brianna those two swords are quite powerful and deadly."
At this mention of her mistake, and Bree's correction of it, Khrys blushed looking down at the quilt on the bed. "It's not my fault I was wrong about what the 'Scimitar of Knowledge' does to people. Daemon never told me what it would do to someone other than him. I already knew that it spoke to him in images. I just assumed it has some sort of defensive magic like the Pendant does. Alright? He would never let me touch it or the pendant
either one, out of fear of what it might do."
Chuckling softly, Zach looked at his wife. "Okay, okay. I understand that. Sentient swords and magic pendants from the Gods are something I'm not used to dealing with. Look, Khrys, we need to get some sleep or else we won't be able to even think tomorrow, let alone do anything if something needs doing. He said he would get his things tomorrow. Talk with him again then, if it's him that comes by. Maybe he'll just tell you what's going on.
Okay?"
"Alright. You're probably right. I'll talk with him if he comes by in the morning." She lay down next to him, kissing him good night for the umpteenth time and pulled the quilt up over her, nestling in the softness of their feather bed. As she dropped off to sleep a stray thought passed through her mind.... 'What if he doesn't come himself? He did say something about sending someone..... '
A restless sleep finally laid claim to her. A sleep filled with fragmented dreams of dark places, and dark beings. Part of her mind, separate from her dreaming self, knew the importance of these dark dreams. Khrys slept on, unaware of the importance of the dreams, and in her deepening sleep, uncaring as well...........

The albino came to in a cold and dark place. his body was curled in a fetal position and he had little room to strech out. Disorentated, he looked about. He had no recollection of where or who he was. Something was wrong with his mechanical eye, the heat overlay wasn't working right.
He felt around with his hands and clawed at the stone around him. As he was trying to figure out his surroundings, the stone that had been blocking the entrance to the nook was moved away. The room outside was dimly lit and two green arms reached in and pulled Daemon out.
The creature set him down in a chair and remained standing behind him. The troll's hands rested on Daemon's shoulders to prevent him from standing. The stench of the creature made Daemon gag. He brought his right arm up to his mouth and that's when he noticed the difference. His right arm looked nothing like his left. There was no skin covering the bio-limb and Daemon could see wires and cords where muscle should have been.
He really had no time to make any sense of it before a second creature entered the room. This creature's features were as repulsive as the troll's scent. He tried to rise and was easily seated by the troll behind him. The true Illithid moved to stand before the albino. It's octopus-like head with small beak only inches from Daemon's face. It
began speaking to Daemon but it's mouth never moved.
"Welcome friend, to my humble home. Do you know who I am?" Daemon shook his head. "Do you know where you are?" Again a negative reply. "Do you know who you are?" Daemon looked down and shook his head once more. It was depressing more than anything else, he wasn't even frightened by the Illithid.
"In that case," the true Illithid contiued, "I won't bother to ask about your arm or your eye. Can you speak at all or will I have to pull the thoughts from your mind?"
"Yes" Daemon said weakly.
"Yes I will have to pull the thoughts from your mind, or yes you can speak?"
Daemon shruged his shoulders and said yes again. The Illithid placed his hands in his pockets and turned from the albino. This one almost wasn't worth the trouble. He picked up a platinum candlestick holder and handed it to Daemon. "Bend this." After struggling for a few seconds the metal yielded to the albino's strength.
"Would you like me to help you get better?" The Illithid asked.
Daemon nodded yes and whispered the words 'help me' Little did he know the words carried across the planes back to Rhydin.
