"Mom.... there's someone here."
Khrys came out onto the front porch at Bree's yell. Looking down the road, she didn't see anyone, but that wasn't unusual. Bree would have heard them approaching long before she could see them. She stood on the porch, waiting. After not too long of a wait, a young man riding a chestnut horse rode into view. Khrys could make out the black and white diamond pattern on the horse-skirt, marking the rider as being from Valensa. As the young
man.... well, boy, really..... got closer, Khrys could clearly see Daemon's personal insignia on the boys tabard, as well as the Coat of Arms of Valensa. Daemon had sent one of the castle pages then, rather than come himself.
Riding into the dooryard, the page dismounted and tethered his horse to the maple tree by the stream and crossed to where she stood. Bree dropped lightly to the ground from the lower branches behind him and followed, wanting to hear some word of her father. At the slight sound the girl made, he turned. When he saw her, he smiled slightly. "M'Lady Brianna, I presume? Your father bid me come to fetch his things."
As the two crossed to where Khrys waited they chatted briefly. "I'm sorry, but I'm afraid you have the advantage over me. You know who I am, but I don't know you, or even how long you've been at the castle."
The page sketched a slight bow and introduced himself. "I'm Maynard, M'lady. And it's small wonder you don't know me. I've only been with the staff less than a week, and most of that was cleaning weapons and such for the Lord's Honor Guard." The boy seemed to swell visably with pride. "This is but my second day in the castle proper, and at that by the Lord Daemon's special request. He told Captain Thomas himself which page he wanted to go on
this ~mission~ for him." The boy stressed the word mission, looking from side to side as if looking for hidden assailants. Bree stifled a small chuckle as she stepped in the cottage.
Maynard drew himself up in front of Khrys. "M'Lady Khrysta. My Lord Daemon did send me to retrieve some of his things from you."
"Come inside, please, while I get everything for you." Looking at his horse, she corrected herself, "Well, mayhaps not everything. I don't think you'll have room enough for all the things he's left here. But, we'll send some this time, and he can always come get the rest when he wants it." He followed her into the cottage. "Would you like something to drink, Maynard, is it?" "Bree, would you get the young man some lemonade? Oh.. and ask
Zach to come give me a hand, would you please, dear. That box is still on the back of the shelf in the closet." As she enters the bedroom, Khrys casually tosses a dressing robe over the back of the chair where Daemon's swords are hanging. For some reason that she can't quite understand herself, she decided to not give them to the page. Shaking her head, she knows it's probably foolishness.
"Khrys?" Zach came in quietly, looking at the covered swords. "What's up?"
"I don't know, Honey. I just don't feel right about giving Daemon's swords to someone that even Bree doesn't know." Khrys climbed up on the footstool and started dragging the large crate of things off the shelf. "Here, catch this for me."
Zach moved under the box, and grunted as he caught it. "Jeez, what's in here? His armor and horse too." They both laughed as Khrys explained. "No. It's just some of his clothes, and books... and I think some boots, too. There's also a small box in there someplace with his jewelry.... You know, amulets and that sort of thing. Just things that got left when he left." Fishing around underneath to the jewelry box, she opened it before Zach
could carry it out. Inside she found the small silver earcuff. Holding it, she looked up at him. "This was Brian's" was all she said as she placed it in her own ebony jewelry box on the dresser.
"Here we are, young man." Maynard hastily stood, nearly spilling his glass.
Eyeing the large box for a moment, he blurted, momentarily flustered, "Ma'am I don't think I have enough room in the saddlebags for all that."
Zach waved a hand dismissively as he headed out the back door. "Oh, don't worry about that, son. I have more bags in the tack room. You can just borrow them, and Daemon can send them back later." Moments later he returned with two large bags and they began trying to fit everything in them. When they had finished, Khrys smiled a too bright smile.
"There you are. I think that's all of it, for now at least. There is another box someplace, but I'll send those things on later." Moving to open the front door, she led the page down the short hallway. "Please, do give Daemon our warmest regards. Tell him to stop by for a visit anytime he's in RhyDin." With that Khrys nearly pushed him out onto the porch. "I don't mean to seem rude, but it is a long ride back to Valensa, and I'm sure you'll
want to be on your way." Once again she smiled at him. For a moment he just stood there, mouth agape looking at her. His mouth snapped shut. "You're right of course, M"Lady. I do need to be off now."
As soon as she had made sure that he was well and truly away, Khrys walked back inside. Zach and Bree were in the kitchen waiting for her. "Mom, you didn't send the swords!!"
"No, I didn't, Hon.... And I'd like to thank you for not saying anything about them, either. I don't know why, exactly, but I just didn't like the idea of sending them off with someone that none of us knows." Giving a lopsided smile, "If 'The Lord Daemon' wants them, he can come get them himself. That way at least I won't be giving them to a complete stranger."

Listening to her mother, Bree was thinking about something in that book of Zach's that he had let her read. "The Art of War" by one of the great war leaders of his world. The man, Sun Tzu, had said something that made sense to Bree. He had said that skillful warriors first made themselves invincible and awaited the enemy's moment of vulnerability. He also said that invincibility depends on one's self and that the enemy's
vulnerability on himself. She also was thinking about what Maynard had been telling her about the goings on in Valensa.
"Bree?" Zach looked at her. "You look a million miles away. Want to tell us what's on your mind?"
She looked from Zach to Khrys, and then out the window to the pasture where she could see Argent in dragon form, curled in the bright afternoon sun. "It's something that that page said. About Daddy. While you were getting all those things from the bedroom, I asked how he was doing, and why he hadn't come himself." Looking at the two of them somberly, she paused collecting her thoughts before continuing. "He told me that someone threatened
him, and that they even hired an assassin." Zach looked at Khrys with a 'See, I told you' expression. "But there was something else. This doesn't make any sense. He said that the new kitchen girl was the assassin and that she had tried to kill him, after she......" Bree looked down at the wooden floor and finished in a whisper, "after she seduced him. Everyone's trying to find her to take back to the castle, I guess so she can stand trial or
something."
Bree looked back up at them. "I don't believe Isabella would do that. She was a friend of mine, I guess. When Daddy and I first moved to Valensa I used to wander all over the place. I'd loose the guards I had to have with me, and run off into the woods. One day I was sitting by a small stream and this girl came up to me, just as bold as you please, and told me that I was sitting on HER rock, by HER stream. We got into a fight about it and
both of us ended up in the stream, covered in slime and mud and laughing so hard we couldn't breathe." She looked down again, speaking softly. "That was Isabella. Now Daddy thinks she's an assassin."
Bree could hear the two of them talking, but she really wasn't listening to the words being said. She watched Argent, thinking about the book and what Maynard had said. And thinking about the swords. She knew why Mom hadn't given the swords to him. But Daddy needed them. He was a good ruler, and a skillful warrior, like in the book. But he wasn't invincible. With his swords, he could be. Argent lifted his head, and looked at her through
the window and nodded his massive head once slowly, almost as he were reading her thoughts. He probably was.

Shortly after breakfast, the royal scribe was brought in to see Daemon. The doppleganger rested comfortably on the throne drinking from a small goblet. Off to the side stood a serving boy and a jug of water. The throne room was dimly lit. The scribe approached parchment and quill in hand.
"M'lord wishes to see me?"
"Where is the royal ledger?"
"Excuse me M'lord?"
"Where is the book that keeps track of who has been paid and for what? The book used for justifying expenses from the royal coiffers."
"Your pardon M'lord, I keep that locked in a strong box in my office."
"Well, go fetch it. NOW!!!"
"Yes M'lord, of course." As the scribe turned to leave Daemon's imposter stopped him.
"What is that about your neck?"
"M'lord?" the scribe asked, confused. "This is the head of the former ArchDuke of Valensa, cleaned and shrunk down of course. You personally insisted that I never take it off."
"Not that." The Doppleganger quickly responded. "Come closer. Come here." The scribe nervously approached his lord. Daemon lifted the eye patch and studied the scribe's neck. "Never mind. It must have been a trick of the light. Go get the ledger please."
The scribe wasted no time running from the chamber. Daemon held out the glass and the young boy came over and filled it again. While the scribe was gone, he thought about this man he was playing at. What kind of man would force his personal scribe to wear the head of his former lord as jewelry? And where the hell did he keep his weapons?
The scribe returned with the ledger. Daemon extended his hands and took the book from the scribe. "Who keeps the histories of Valensa?"
"Of the castle proper I do M'lord. Of Valensa proper, the royal surveyor does."
"Fetch me the last twelve moons of the Castle proper and request that the surveyor come see me." The scribe bowed and was about to exit when again Daemon stopped him. "Who is Madame Xerox in Rhydin? and why does she recieve 100 platinum Pieces a month?"
"M'lord? Madame Xerox is widower to the late Mister Xerox. She is the woman whose husband you killed while searching for the Lady Khrysta's kidnappers. Is there a problem M'lord?" A suspecion arose within the scribe and the Dopplerganger knew he had asked one too many questions.
"Page, go fetch me some ale. I grow tired of all this water." The page left quickly. The scribe, not wanting to arouse his master that he suspected something, walked more slowly across the room. Nothing could be kept from the doppleganger, and once the scribe's back was turned he hurled the dagger that Daemon kept in his left boot.
The scribe fell to the floor as Daemon jumped down and crossed the room. He picked the scribe up as the page re-entered. "Get the guards, this man just tried to kill me." The boy turned back to the hallway and hollored and the doppleganger snapped the scribe's neck.

The true Illithid commanded the troll to leave and it did. He then began walking about the room. "I need to find out how much of your mind is left intact. You were once a warrior. Can you handle a blade?" Daemon shrugged he really didn't know. He found it difficult to follow the creature's words, and there was something wrong with his left eye.
If he opened his eye, it caused him to become dizzy, so he left it closed. He was afraid to put his hand over it, because the first time he did, he felt something weird. The Illithid noticed this. and took a piece of cloth from his pocket. He walked behind Daemon and tied it on his head. "If that doesn't help, I can extingush the flames."
"Help" Daemon mumbled again and the true Illithid shook its head. "Follow me," it commanded and Daemon rose and followed the Illithid out into the corridor. They walked a short way before the small corridor gave way to a larger chamber. Daemon followed this creature across the main floor. Various creatures worked in underground mushroom fields and tending rothe.
The two entered a structure that was oval in shape. The true Illithid stoped before another Illithid for few moments before continuing on. He stoped Daemon before a set of double doors. "Go in here, if you come back out, I will help you."
Daemon entered the doors. He was standing in the center of the oval. Across the room stood a Minotaur. The creature waited as it's master was commanding it to. About the Arena floor were the broken remains of other creatures. The delicate features of an elf, the hard lines of a dwarf, Daemon's remains would be next. Tired of being studied by the albino, the minotaur's master commands it to act.
Daemon now realizes what is expected of him. It's too late, the beast reaches him and picks him up in a tight hug. Daemon pounds on it's chest stinging his left hand. When his right hand hits, he doesn't feel a thing but the minotaur releases him. The creature picks up a large rock and hurls it at the albino. Daemon's arms come up, right over left in an "X" pattern defensively. He's knocked a step back, but the rock drops harmlessly to
the ground.
Daemon can't pick out the one who brought him here in the crowd. He starts looking around but all the creatures look the same. The minotaur charges in once more. Daemon is tired, and hungry and scared. There's so much noise in his head he can't even hear himself think. He screams out as the beast's fist comes in and ducks under it. His right arm comes out in a series of quick jabs.
The noise in his head silences momentarily as the bull-man falls back. It's master commands it to rise, but before it can get up Daemon jumps on it and continues pounding with his right and then even his left hand. Something in his mind stirs, this is not the first time he has beaten a man to death. Behind him, the Illithid appears. "Well done, you can stop now, it's quite dead."
Daemon turns quickly and stands. "Help me!" he cries out, and his arms reach out towards the creature. The creature sends a wave of energy to Daemon's mind and the albino's arms drop down. "You don't want to hurt me, I'm the closest thing you have to a friend now." It's true, and the once proud warlord knows it. In silence he follows his 'friend' once more

"Mom..... Where did you put my good red tunic?" Bree stood in the middle of her bedroom, clothes strewn all about the room as she dug again through the bottom drawer of her dresser. Turning around to yell through the open door once again, she spies the object of her search.... hanging haphazardly over the foot board of the bed, right where she had probably tossed it earlier in her search. Sighing deeply, Bree grabbed the tunic
and pulled it over her head. Surveying herself in the full length looking glass, she was mostly pleased with what she saw there. Running her brush through her silvery white hair one last time before tieing it back with a red ribbon, she looked at her pale reflection. The only thing she would change about her appearance was the paleness. No golden tanned skin for her. Shrugging lightly, she tied the ribbon and went in search of her mother. Today
was a special day, and she wanted to make sure that she looked alright. Today they were going to visit her God Parents, AJay and Sher.
Coming out of her room, dressed and ready to go, Khrys looked over her daughter with no small bit of concern. Bree hadn't been sleeping well the past few nights, tossing fitfully in her sleep and talking incoherently. When the girl awoke in the morning, she could never remember her dreams.... only that they were full of shadows and pain. Last night's had been the worst so far. Grimacing just a bit, Khrys could certainly sympathize. Her
sleep had been troubled by nightmares as well. Strange creatures walked with her in her dreams, and she didn't seem to be herself. It was almost as if she had taken the skin of another. She thought she had felt Daemon's mind touch once or twice, but it was different...... empty.
"Come on, Mom... let's go. We're gonna be late. We were supposed to be there for lunch, and I NEED to stop at the marketplace again on the way." Looking down in uncharacteristic shyness, Bree explained. "I want to buy some rouge."
Khrys stifles a smile. Her little girl is growing up. "Alright, Honey. Let me just tell Zach we're on our way." Crossing to the back door, Khrys yells to the barn, "Honey, we're going now. Are you sure you can't come with us?"
Coming from the barn, wearing some old, well tattered work clothes, Zach looks a mess and knows it. Smiling warmly as he moves to give her a kiss he apologizes once again. "Khrys, I have so much work to do here. The barn is getting so bad, what with all the holes in the roof. I really need to take advantage of the good weather and get it done. Give my love to Sher and AJay for me."
"Of course, Love." Khrys smiled then and turned away, gathering her things from the table. Bree watched from where she was waiting in the hallway by the front door, shifting her weight from foot to foot nearly dancing with excitement. "Come on... Mom...." The two women folk hurried on their way, chattering excitedly to mask their general unease. Zach watched them leave from the front window. Turning to wave to him one last time, neither
of them noticed as the warm smile left his face to be replaced by an unusual somberness. 'They'd be gone most of the day. He was sure that would be more than enough time.'

Sher had a strange feeling all week. She couldn't quite put her finger on it, but knew there was something very wrong. It had something to do with Dae, but what, she didn't know.
She had found out from Khrys that Dae had left his swords in the Arena one eve, and that just wasn't like him. He was never without his weapons. She saw him in the Arena one night and he was acting very strange, not like himself at all. Sher was almost afraid to be in there with him, and he being one of her best friends.
But she couldn't think about that right now....she had to get ready for a visit from Khrys and Bree, her GodDaughter, Dae's daughter. It has been quite a while since Sher had last seen Brianna, and she was very anxious to see her. It was going to be a great day, if only she could get these thoughts of impending danger out of her mind. Sher had a gigantic headache that started with a nightmare sometime in the night...she saw some awful creatures
and kept hearing Dae yelling for someone to help him. It seemed so real. Thank goodness it was only a dream...

Zach watched as Khrys and Bree rode off to Sher’s house. Bree wanted to visit her God parents. As soon as they were out of sight Zach went to the cottage and found Argent. "Argent could you get me a couple of black dragon scales?" Argent sensed that Zach was actually going to help with what had been troubling Bree and Khrys. "Yes I can do that. When would you want them?" Zach nodded at him "Really soon would be nice." Argent smiled
and left the cottage. He was back in a matter of moments as far as Zach was concerned. The white elf walked up to the table and set down a nice stack of scales for him. Zach looked up "Where did you go to get them on such short notice?" Zach was having a hard enough time getting used to the swirling eyes and this was too strange.
Argent walked away to the couch and said over his shoulder "Far away and nowhere. From past to future and no when." As he smiled to himself he could sense that Zach was about to laugh when Zach spoke "We are going to get along just fine. Do you think I could get you to wear these sunglasses?" Argent was amused and cheerfully came over and put them on. Zach thanked him "I was starting to get vertigo every time I looked at you. Now want to go
to Valensa the slow way?" Argent nodded an affirmative and they went to the door. Zach laughed "We have a bit of a problem here. Could I get you to hold the door and close it after I leave? You can come out and hop in after you close the door." Argent nodded again and Zach trotted to the bedroom. He activated the portal and waited. As he stood there he thought of something. He stepped out into the hall and asked, "Is it possible to go from the
closet to the ship without actually walking there?" Argent looked up at him "Yes!" Zach just walked back to his portal and hopped into the ship "Dragons!".
He strapped himself in and the ship lifted off of the table and floated through the door, as it did, it expanded to full size landed and the door opened. Argent arrived and was directed to a seat where he strapped in. Zach looked at him "I will be back in a sec. I have to run downstairs real quick." He left the navigational room and stepped through the portal ran downstairs and got the scales that Argent had gotten for him. As he sat into
his seat he looked back at Argent. "What I am about to do will not be harmfull. Nobody will get hurt at all. So don’t worry about it. Do not get out of your seat either." Argent nodded at him.
The guards on the wall looked over at the horizon to see smoke billowing up out of the woods. As they watched they could see a winged form swooping down and rising up in the distance. Then the distant form swooped down and vanished out of sight. Suddenly they were frozen in terror at the sound of a roaring dragon. It had just slammed into the wall. Massive talons were crushing the wall like chalk as it began to collapsed under it’s weight.
Everyone was frozen in dragon fear and could not move. One of the guards watched in horror as his best friend was picked up and slung about like a little doll until his entrails spilled out onto the courtyard below. The huge obsidian black dragon slunk to the front door of the keep. It’s eyes were filled with hatred as it’s foul breath dripped with the acidic malevalence it spewed forth from time to time. Everthing was destroyed in it’s path. Nobody
was able to move at all. When the dragon looked at them it was as if it looked into their near future and saw a miserable and violent death in store for them.
Zach had landed the ship in the courtyard. He opened the door and tossed the dragon scales around quite liberally. As he did this he looked at the guards frozen in mute horror. He thought about tying some ones shoelaces together before he left but changed his mind. Laughing to himself he closed the door and activated the scanner to look for titanium. After scanning for a few moments he concluded that Daemon wasn’t home. He lifted up from
the courtyard as did the massive hate filled dragon.
As the dragon sprung into the air the wind it whipped up was very powerful and snapped the guards out of their horror filled stupor. All of them watched rapt and dumb struck as it flew off over the horizon as quickly as it had arrived. A couple of the guards looked down at the destroyed wall and saw it was intact and unscratched. This created quite a commotion with the guards as they greeted their now undead friends. One of them finally
came to his senses and ran in to tell Lord Daemon what had apparently not really happened. When he got to the door he found the scales all over the place and picked them up. He shook one of them at his fellow guards "What the hell is this?" They all shrugged and he ran into the keep leaving them to theorize over who was mad at the lord of the keep. They knew they didn’t want to go against a black dragon at all. They weren’t quite sure whether they
had seen one either. Only one of them noticed the crow that circled lazily overhead.
Zach and Argent hovered over the keep for quite some time and waited to see if Daemon came out. All he did was stick his head out of the door and then start yelling at the guard. Zach smiled "Good help is so hard to get these days." Finally Zach said "Home!" Zach parked the ship in the cave and both of them returned via the portal. As they sat down in the cottage Zach laughed "Well the master was away but he wasn't at the same time. I
still got something out of this." Argent looked at him with a curious expression. "If I do that a few more times I will be able to walk right in and they wont bother to notice, as long as I’m dressed like a six foot chicken or something.. They don’t trust each other or themselves as much as they used to."

The time for Khrys and Bree to arrive was finally here. Sher was very excited...her headache had subsided a bit and she was in fine spirits. She had lunch made and was waiting in the front room for her guests to arrive. All of a sudden she heard horses coming and smiled because she knew the moment she was waiting for had finally arrived.
The horses stopped outside and the *girls* came to the door. Sher ran out to meet them. She gave them both a big hug and invited them in. When they were seated in the kitchen about to have lunch, Sher asked Bree how her Dad was. Bree gave Khrys a strange look, and said that she thought he was fine, or he was the last time she saw him. Sher wasn't supposed to see the look, but she did. She then told them about her dream, and how she *heard* Dae
crying for help. Thats when Khrys told Sher about the visit from the page and how she kept the swords from him, not knowing if she could trust him or not. Bree seemed to get a little agitated when they were talking about this, and started fidgeting like she had something to say, but wouldn't say a word. They thought it was because they were talking about her father, and her protectiveness was kicking in.
Sher's headache was starting to get bad again, but she didn't let them know it....she kept hearing Dae's voice...Help Me...and seeing these creatures in her mind..the ones from her dream...she began to wonder if they were tied in with Dae asking for help. She knew that she wasn't *just* dreaming.
They sent Bree outside to give the horses some apples and while she was out there, Sher asked Khrys if she had been having some very strange dreams. With some strange-looking creatures in them. Khrys told her that she had not been sleeping well, and had in fact saw some very weird creatures in her dreams also. Sher had a funny feeling that somehow these strange dreams tied in with how weird Dae had been acting lately.

After the scribe's body had been removed from the chamber, the imposter went into Daemon's private quaters. He had tore the place apart looking for weapons and had found none. He looked through the books he had shoved aside while searching for some secret paneling. Among the books he found a small leather bound journal. He opened it to a rondom page, and began to read.
. . . at the Stars End Bar, there is a dealer named 'Arcane'. The Arcane are willing to trade me a few gemstones and a hunk of platinum for 'Diamond.' She knows how much I love that blade, it has saved my life on more than one occasion. She's worth that and more. Besides I can't walk around wearing all these blades all the time. She's gonna kill me but I love her. . .
The Doppleganger fliped to the begining of the journal and called for Maynard who had just returned from Rhydin.
"Yes M'lord?" Maynard kneeled before the man. "Your things are comming up from the stables as we speak."
"Thank you Maynard. Maynard, how long have you been cleaning weapons?"
"Only a fortnight M' lord, It will be a full twelve moons before I can even begin to train with a blade."
"How would you like to begin training with the next class?"
"M'Lord!" Maynard's eyes lit up.
"I need you to go to the S.E.B. and speak with Arcane. Tell him I would like 'Diamond' returned to me at any cost. Take this and have him fill in the amount in Platinum Pieces." The imposter handed the boy a blank mark with the seal of Valensa on it. He folded it twice and sealed it with Daemon's signant ring. "Disappear with this mark and your life is forfiet. Is that clear?"
"Yes M'lord, I understand." The page ran from the room and back to the stables he grabbed a fresh horse and saddled it himself. Then he was off for the Stars End. Meanwhile the imposter was back to reading the albino's journal.
. . .Walyan took me to a place in Rhydin the likes of which I had never seen. The Red Dragon Inn was a melting pot of creatures. Vampires and Drow drank with Paladins and Dwarfs. Following him down the stairs I witnessed a spectacular sight. Men an women were dueling. The imposter flipped a few pages.
. . . there against the bar was perhaps the lovelyest woman I had ever seen. The raven haired godess with the slightest hues of violet. I had to know her. I walked to the bar but found I couldn't talk. I ordered an ale and turned to her. "Janella and Phillip, please enter the Ring of Fire." She left, that must be her name. Janella I will find out more about her first.
Daemon had written 2 chapters worth all about Janella. The imposter fliped through the pages, Daemon talks to Janella, they duel, he talks to her some more. Always she's distant but the Albino is undaunted. The doppleganger flips ahead to the most recent entries.
. . .I can't believe I'm letting Brianna become one. It's great that she is spending so much time with her aunt, but Destiny is not her mother. God's Teeth my little Bree a Dragon Rider. That's not half as bad as how she dresses like her aunt. I swear all the women dress that way, these Dragon Riders might be a bad influence on my little princess. Hae-War knows I can't tell her no.
The doppleganger ate in relative peace while reading through the journals. The books were written in time frames and it made the most sense to him to read them in reverse order. One time during his meal he was disturbed. Captain Thomas returned with the 'assassin'. Isabella had been crying and her clothes and hair were a mess. She was seated in the antechamber while the captain spoke with his lord. Within seconds the captain returned, closing
the door just before being hit with a pewter plate.
"He has ordered you to die. You will be placed in the dungeon till morning, then you will be placed in stockade in the courtyard during the day." The captain delivered the sentence solemly. He was a man torn between his beliefs and his feality. The problem was he was a raised a soldier, his father had been grand marshall of Valensa. A soldier obeyed his Lord without question. That was the reason the doppleganger charged him with all these
tasks.
"But it's a lie." Isabella sobbed. Her shoulders slumped. Why was this happening to her? What sin against the gods had she commited in this or another life that she would die before her 16th birthday. She would die a virgin, having never even kissed a boy, yet accused of trying to seduce the Lord Daemon. She was lead to the dungeons and a trail of tears was all that marked her passing.

"Albino, let's go. If you are going to be my prize fighter, there is someone you need to see first." Daemon followed along behind his 'friend' in the past 10 days he had fought two dozen battles against creatures ranging from a handfull of Kobolds to a cyclops. All the battles had been weaponless but wich each victory Daemon was told he came closer to the prize fights.
"Where are we going?" He asked. He had regained use of his optic enhancement device and his understanding of the common tongue had returned. His mind was healing itself from the mental barrage it had sustained. He still didn't know his name or where he had come from but at least he wasn't helpless.
"You're undergoing and 'operation' of sorts. We are going to see if you have any psonic capabilities. I would at least like to see you be able to learn one or two psionic defenses and maybe a devotion." The Illithid
replied. The Illithid had been monitoring Daemon's healing process. It wasn't that he couldn't remember his name, it was that the Illithid had been blocking his identiy from him. This 'operation' would leave the Albino with no hope of ever recovering his deep memories.
"We just have to win one more fight and you'll have earned enough to pay for the operation." The Illithid's standard of living had improved greatly in the past few days and he was more than willing to share his wealth with Daemon.
Although Daemon never saw any of the winnings his 'share' was always spent on his room which he now had his own wooden bed. Some on attire had been made for him, boots from rothe hide and armor for when he was fighting. He looked like the ghost of a gladiator.
Daemon now knew his way and headed to the arena anxious to fight. He stood in the ring first alone, he was the favored in this bout and as such all would see him before the challenger was brought out. He smiled and waved to the horific faces around him. He was a warrior, trained, no bred to be a killing machine and at last he was someplace where he could do just that.
The other doors opened and a new creature entered. The Kuo-toan fishman was brandishing a barbed spear. This was a handicap match because Daemon was un armed the stakes would be higher. The Fishman wasted no time attacking the albino. It was a prisoner like Daemon and it's only reason in life was to please it's master.
Daemon's 'friend' had a better understanding of the human mind and never treated Daemon as a posession. His master also spoke without the hissing noises that most of the non-beaked Mind Flayers used. Daemon fought to better himself and his living conditions, the reward system was much more effective and the albino's prowess wasn't sacrificed.
The thrusting kuo-toa blew past Daemon's Fancy SideStep. He wondered where he had learned that move. The next pass was a bit more agressive but Daemon's bio limb parried the blow while he landed two quick jabs with his left hand. The fishman charged in again and found himself on the floor without his spear. Confused he looked around before Daemon was kind enough to return the spear pointy end first. The kuo-toa's spear would later be broken rather
than pulled from the foot and a half of
earth that it was stuck in.
He left the arena and waited for his 'friend' to join him outside the double doors. The true Illithid showed up in a few moments. "Well done Albino, would you like to eat before or after your 'operation'?"
"After will be fine, I'm kinda looking forward to this. Maybe I'll be able to speak telepathically like you." Daemon answered. "Maybe, indeed." the Illithid thought to himself, and lead the way to what would become the end of everything Daemon ever was.

"What is the meaning of this interruption?" The Albino imposter bellowed. Gods how did the real Daemon ever find peace. The imposter had just replaced the castle scribe with one of his own underworld associates. They were arranging a way to suck Valensa dry when a guard broke in.
"M'Lord Daemon,"he was out of breath. "Dragon. . . Courtyard. . . men. . . dead."
Daemon's imposter moved through the palace quickly making for the court yard. He used his innate ESP to asses the situation. His men were terrified beyond belief, there was no Dragon he could sense. When he looked out some men where picking up something off the ground.
"Bring those here." he commanded. He looked over the Dragon scales and went back inside. "Send Thomas to me" was all he said. When he returned to his chamber he told the new scribe to pen a missive, then he began to speak knowing that Thomas
would be a few minutes.

"Destiny,
I am in need of a favor and as much as I hate to ask for help, you are perfectly capable to help me in this matter. It would appear that a Black Dragon was about Valsena today. I say appears because there was no damage but I did find scales. Send me a score of Dragon Riders. If some wizard or illusionist is going to summon monsters in hopes to draw me out, they will be in for a surprise when they make their next show.
Send only men as the attire your ladies wear does make it difficult for my men to keep their minds to their duties. You neednt come yourself you have done more than enough for me already. Brianna is with her mother so worry not.
One last thing, this is Captain Thomas. He aspires to be Grand Marshall one day. See if you can't loosen him up. Keep him around for a few days. Have fun with him.
Daemon"

The imposter was affixing the sealing wax with his signet ring when Captain Thomas arrived. "M'lord wishes my presence?"
"Thomas, you know my aunt Destiny do you not?" The reading of the journals had paid off. The imposter had even managed to meet the famous 'Janella Vallonia' He had to admit that the real Daemon had good taste in women.
"Yes M'lord, I know the Mistress of Fire"
"Good, take this to her. I would like you to stay on there for a few days as I have asked her to send a score of Dragon riders here. Seeing as how I reguested all men, we wouldn't want those ladies all alone. Destiny is a fine warrior and leader, you could learn a great deal from her." That was more than a suttle hint and Thomas knew he wasn't being asked but told to stay with the dragon riders. 'I will send for you when you are needed again"
"M'lord, who will coordinate the men and Dragon riders?"
"Captain, that is no longer your concern. When you return we shall discuss your insulence, now begone."
"I'm impressed a disembodied voice spoke to the doppleganger. I take it you are doing well in Valensa?"
"Things are runing smoothly but I need a few more days. The rest of my men should be here tonight. How's your friend?"
"He is an incredible piece of work and a superb warrior, be thankful that in a few days he won't even know there exists a Valensa or a Daemon for that manner.

"What do you mean, Dae wasn't there? You said you saw him."
"Khrys, the man I saw wasn't Daemon. He looked like Daemon, but it wasn't him."

Bree closed the door on the conversation in the living room and turned back to her own. "What do you mean it wasn't Daddy? You and Zach saw him there."
"I mean that Zach did something with his ship... he called it a scan. Bree, there was no titanium in the area." He waited for a moment to allow that to sink in before continuing. "Your father's arm is made from titanium and if there wasn't any there, but we still saw him, that can only mean that the man in Valensa isn't your father." Argent waited as Bree thought carefully about what he was saying. As he watched, the girl got a gleam in her
eye. A gleam that he had learned to be careful of.
"Okay. Then...... if that isn't Daddy...... who is he?" The question wasn't directed at Argent, and he didn't even try to reply. He waited with inborn patience as she thought and worked it out in her own mind. Refusing to entertain even the possibility that her father might be dead, she began pacing restlessly around the small room. "Argent... we have to help him. The real one I mean. I bet the imposter knows where he is."
"Brianna, we are NOT going to go up there and confront him. That would be crazed!! Absolutely crazed!!" The white elf moved to her side, grabbing her arms to express the intensity of his concern. "If we must go, at least take someone that can deal with it, Someone that knows....." His voice trailed to a whisper, unable to complete the thought.
"Knows? Knows who? Daddy? But that's not Daddy. My father is someplace else, Argent, doing Gods know what. He might be a prisoner someplace. He might be..... ", she turned her head aside for a moment, then turned back to look defiantly into his eyes. "But you're right. I need help with this." Again came the gleam to her eye. "And I know just the person." With that Bree snuck quietly out of her bedroom, making sure that Khrys and Zach
were still in the living room. She returned within a few minutes holding her father's sword belt. Doubling it around her slim waist, she latched the buckle and turned. "Well?"
Looking at her, the heavy leather belt draped around her nearly ready to fall off, Argent had to stifle a small chuckle. "I guess this means we ride into the face of danger, just like your great aunt."
"Aye.... like you said, Crazed. Let's go."
His low voice rumbled in exasperation as he asked her again, "Brianna, where are we going?"
Turning as she reached the door, "I would have thought that would be obvious. Crazed, remember?" Without another word of explanation she left the room, quietly closing the door behind them. She moved quietly down the hall to the kitchen and out the back door to the large pasture. Following at her heels, Argent just rolled his eyes as he picked up her thought. Concentrating for a moment on Flame, his mother, he passed the thought to her. A
deep rumble in his mind was all the answer he received..... His mother was laughing.

As they landed on the training field, they were virtually engulfed by the beehive of activity going on around them. Someone shouted to her from across the field, "Bree, are you coming with us?"
Calling to the young Rider as she went in search of her Great Aunt, "Depends Florin. Where are you going?" As she reached the building that housed Destiny and Flame's rooms, she turned sharply in surprise at the man's answer. "You're durned right, I'm going." Giving a lopsided grin much like her father's, "I need to see Aunt Destiny first though. I have something I need to talk with her about. She around?"
"In her rooms. She has someone with her, though. You might want to wait."
"This can't wait, Florin."
The heels of her riding boots clicked in double time as the two hurried down the oversize corridor towards the back of the building to her great aunt's suite of rooms. "Did you tell Flame what was going on in Valensa?"
Nearing the large oaken door, the white elf at her side looked at her, puzzlement on his delicate features at the activity on the field. "No, I didn't. I did tell her that we were coming here, and that you needed to speak with your aunt about your father, but I didn't go into details with her." The door swung open before his hand had even touched it's hard surface. Destiny stood before them, dressed for flight and obviously in a hurry to be
on her way. Looking beyond her into the room, she could see that her aunt's guest was still present, his back to the door to afford some privacy to those just entering. Even without seeing his face, Bree recognized the man, though she couldn't imagine why he was here. "Captain Thomas?" The man turned at the mention of his name. "What are you doing here?"
He bowed slightly to her. "M'Lady Brianna. Your father sent me to seek aid from his Aunt. There was an attack on the Keep. An illusory black dragon sending of some power, it would seem." At his mention of the black dragon, Argent and Bree shared a look between them, and both began at once......"That wasn't an attack" ..... "That was Zach."
Captain Thomas and Destiny both listened intently to the young girl as she explained. She told them of her father's recent strange behaviour, Captain Thomas nodding his agreement. She showed them the swords she carried, and told them how her mother had found them, but that her father hadn't even seemed to know they were gone. She then explained what Zach and Argent had done while she and her mother were away at Sher's, and how they had
discovered that his arm was not titanium. There she stopped, looking expectantly to them. She was not disappointed. Her aunt asked one question only.
"You're certain that this man is not my nephew?" Bree nodded. Destiny pulled on her leather flying gloves, and buckled her sword belt around her slender waist. As she stalked through the door, she sent a mental message to Flame to have everyone ready, that they were leaving soon.
Destiny turned to the task of readying the Riders for flight the moment she reached the field. As she checked the harnessing of her Riders one by one she answered the unspoken question that was in everyone's minds. "We Ride to aid Daemon."
Bree gasped, and began to protest "But Aunt Destiny, didn't you hear what I......"
Silencing Bree with no more than a look, Destiny calmly mounted Flame, pulling Captain Thomas up behind her. She motioned for Brianna to mount as well. As the girl swung into place atop Argent, Destiny looked out over the assembled Riders. "But first, we deal with this imposter."

Khrys sat in the window seat in the front parlor, waiting for she knew not what. Bree had left, taking her father's swords..... leaving no note to say where she had gone. Zach had gone to Valensa in search of her, hoping to catch her before she was able to confront the false Daemon..... and Khrys waited.
The cup of tea, her fourth, had grown cold in front of her... much like the three before it. She sat curled in the morning light, absently stroking one of the cats, feeling it's reassuring purr against her hand. If only she were as certain that all was right in the world.
A shadow fell over the cottage, bringing her aware of the sound of wings on the wind. Bree had returned !! She moved quickly through the front rooms and out the back door. As she rounded the corner of the barn, expecting to see Brianna and Argent, she saw a young man slide from the back of a blue dragon. He moved across the pasture, approaching openly with a smile. Khrys did not know this young man, but she feared something had happened.
"M'Lady Khrysta?" When Khrys nodded he continued. "My name is Florin. I'm a friend of your daughter's. We've trained together with her aunt Destiny." Khrys remained silent as she listened. "I've been sent to tell you where she is, and what has happened. And to offer you a ride, should you care to travel dragon back."
"My daughter..... where is she? Is she safe?" The words were out in a rush before she even thought them.
The young smiled rougishly, running his hand through his near black hair. "Aye... she's safe. She's flown with a wing to Valensa. Her aunt leads them."
A moment was all she needed to decide. "Wait here.... I need to change. I'll be back in just a moment." She turned and ran back to the cottage, lifting her long skirts. When she returned, she was clad in dark brown leggings, soft leather boots and a forest green tunic. Her rapier was at her side, for all the good it would do her. As she climbed up behind Florin, she tied her long hair back and grabbed the side harnessing. "Let's go."
They flew to the north east.... to Valensa. She had thought that she would never see it again. From above it looked the picture of serenity..... small squared off fields..... animals and men working in those fields together. Women folk hanging laundry on lines to dry. It would have appeared to one that knew no better that nothing was amiss. As they neared the Keep, Florin decended rapidly to land in a clearing in the nearby forests.
Looking to him questioningly he whispered that he had been asked to bring her here if she wanted, but that he was to join the others without her. Destiny didn't wish to have her involved should the situation go awry. Khrys nodded her understanding. Florin gave her a salute as he and the blue took to the air again to meet up with the rest of the wing.
Once again, Khrys settled in the warm sunlight to await the turn of events.

The Albino opened his eyes again. Standing just off to the side were two Illithids. The doctor and the Albino's friend. A soft moan escaped his lips drawing their attention. "uggh, what hit me?"
"Good, you're awake." the thought entered his mind and he recognized the pattern as belonging to his Illithid host. "How are you feeling Jordan?"
"Jordan?" the albino repeated.
"Yes, you are Jordan Nykel, formerly of Escalant."
"Who is that?" he motioned to the prone figure on the next table over.
"That is no one of any importance anymore. Are you hungry Jordan?" The Illithid knew it was critical to keep mentioning Jordan's name and never speak of Daemon Satyriasis. "You've got a big fight tomorrow. What do you say to a big meal and an early night?"
"I could eat a rothe I'm so hungry."
"Good, let's go home then." The two left as the second Illithid began feasting on the remains of both Jordan Nykel's and Daemon's brains. Back at their 'home' the troll had already cooked the rothe for the albino and prepared a special dish for it's master. The Ablino and the Illithid ate in silence.
"How did it go?" Jordan asked
"How did what go Jordan?" came the Illithid's response.
"My 'operation', the one that would give me powers beyond my wildest dreams. You know, the deal we made."
If he had a mouth instead of a beak, the Illithid would have grined like a chesire cat. He had infact made that very deal with the real Jordan Nykel. He wasn't lying when he answered. "Jordan my friend, It could not have gone any better. Now finish your meal and wash up, Tobi-Ann has been waiting all day for you to return."
"Tobi Ann is here?"Jordan asked. "How could I ever repay you?" The albino jumped from the table and ran to his room. Tobi-Ann was here alright, too bad her mind was under the Illithid's control. It was the icing on the cake of the perfect mind crime. The girl would respond as if the albino was in fact the real Jordan Nykel.
By morning Jordan was fully refreshed and ready for battle, and Daemon Satyriasis was fully surpressed. Very little of Daemon's memories were even in Jordan's head and the ones that were were very compatible with the albino's.
The real Jordan Nykel had been a prize duelist in Escalant, and a part time employee of the very bar in which he dueled. He was a tremendously emotional man and he lost his right arm in battle during the Times of Trouble. A powerful sage crafted him a replacement from granite. This plan had taken years of planing and soon this unique Illithid could leave the 'Hive' and start out on his own.
