First challenge for ring #10
From: quickvarmg@aol.com (QuickVarMG)
Date: 08 Jun 1998 13:03:23 EDT
::He makes a copy of the letter he wrote very early in the morning, and tacks it up on the boards, for those who read it, will be aware::
To Duke Leto Covington,
This letter is to inform you that I have desires to challenge for your tenth baronial ring. This challenge will be mud free and sincere.
My reasons are simple, and I hope I won't be taking too much of your time by describing them. I feel one reason it is called a challenge, is because it is a duel between skill, and not what you mostly know about your opponent. Because we haven't matched skill much in the ring, I can safely call this a "challenge".
Along with this, I have aspirations of becoming a baron one day in my dueling career. I have made three challenges so far, and each one had brought me back with a naked finger. My two tournaments have proven to be unsuccessful, as well.
A third reason, is that I feel you can respond to this challenge with honor. Not that I feel the other barons can't, please don't get me wrong. I think you know what I'm saying, so I don't think I need to elaborate on this reason any further.
Also, I have many friends as barons, whom I have no inclination of challenging. You are honorable and an excellent dueler, which allowed you the title of overlord. Unfortunately, I haven't spoken with you enough to call you a friend as close as some others, though I still hold you in high regards as a friend. You defeated me in the tournament, and though I don't seek vengeance, I would like to duel you again on the same level of intensity,
with a title at risk. I hope you know what I'm trying to say, because I've already put too much coal in a few stoves.
I hope I recieve a response soon. I wish you luck ahead of time.
Respectfully,
Var Medici-Giovanni

Warlord Var,
Please impart upon me the wisdom you see in challenging Baron Leto rather then the smoke rings your blowing in that fluffy challenge letter. You describe the following as your reasons for challenging;
"I have made three challenges so far, and each one had brought me back with a naked finger.
Unfortunately, I haven't spoken with you enough to call you a friend as close as some others, though I still hold you in high regards as a friend."
Basically you admit to being a lousy failure when it comes to being under pressure in the ring, yet you talk about the potential challenge becuase of lack of knowledge of your opponent? Perhaps, your failure is that you scout potential opponents to much, so you try and justify a challenge to Baron Leto. Then you go on to say most of the barons are your friends yet I seem to have read a slight of insult to them even though your trying to include a
disclaimer. And finally you say your challenging Baron Leto becuase he's not your friend but really he is? If you want to become better friends with someone you don't have to stand in thier face and say "I came here to take something away from you."
Are you sure your Hetro or Homo? Do you want to wear black or white today? Should you challenge or not to challenge? Your the most indesicive confusing, not sure if hypocritical, misunderstanding person I have ever seen on these boards, Warlord Var. Forgive me if my words sound harsh but frankly I just don't understahere where your coming from or going, because you seem to be coming from all diffferent directions at once and seem to be going
nowhere.
Somedays I see you as being a whiny brat and other days I see you as seeing a flicker of what the DoS means. You talk about loyalites and the respect of the titles, yet you spend half your time writing and insulting most title holders. And then the one title holder you probably don't even care about you go and challenge. Why not challenge Adonai. You sure seem hot for him and want to crucify him, maybe Leto shares all the same ideals you do.
If you challenged Adonai and took the ring from him then there would be 2 of your types of votes compared to yours and Adonais ideals cancelling each other out. That is just assuming hypothetically that Leto had the same views as you do. I am not speaking for Leto's views and I do not pretend to know them.
Warlord Var, you don't make any sense to me, becuase your actions contradict yours words it seems. Your philosophy and preaching does not suit what you practice at least IMHO.

Warlord Var, you don't make any sense to me, becuase your actions contradict yours words it seems. Your philosophy and preaching does not suit what you practice at least IMHO.<
Lousy failure? Read the histories, Baphe. Challenge 1 against Daegarth, I forgot to submit my peer wins. Challenge void. Challenge 2 against Adonai, he beat me. Challenge 3 against Evan, Seamus challenged him before me, and Seamus won, thus making that challenge null.
And it is a challenge, when you don't know your opponent's tactics. This accusation that my "scouting is a failure" so I justify it by challenging Leto is based on absolutely no proof, and thus is an attack.
How was I insulting my friends? Because I don't want to challenge them? Would it make you happy if I took back my challenge and gained 15 peer wins so I can challenge my good friend Dal, to be overlord? I don't want to challenge my friends, simple.
And I say I challenge Leto because I haven't spoken to him enough to consider him a friend as close as many others. Read, Baphe. It does wonders.
Trust me, Baphe, your words have been taken at heart, and I am responding. Now how many titleholders have I truly insulted, Baphe? Seamus, one, and I apologized to him. Adonai, two, and I have said, again and again, Baphe, why I'm not challenging him. You say I crucify him, and he calls me a leader of some Nazi clan? This is tiring, really.
This was already an accusation, but some say I'm not challenging Adonai because I'm worried he will beat me. Again, this is an attack with no proof behind it, and I'm not afraid of challenging Adonai.
Least, when I called Adonai a child, his actions have proved it. So from now on, read, instead of write, Baphe. Your words make me tired from restating so many thousand times why I won't challenge Adonai. Now I think I have responded pretty much mud free, despite the harsh accusations.
I don't want to get others involved, but I'm just pondering how else your accusations can be proven right or wrong. There are a couple ways, but they are against what I believe is right, so the only thing you can do is wait. Heck, it's what I think Adonai should be doing now that he's renegade; let him stew in for a while, and he can see if he is really happy being a renegade.
Respectfully,
Var Medici-Giovanni

::Adds something after::
However, when you read the histories, it will say that I didn't retain rank long enough with my first challenge to Daegarth. The fact is, when I submitted my challenge, but I forgot to send my Peer Wins to Golden. I don't know what would have happened then, but I already dropped down to Grand Master after the challenge was accepted.
I don't know whether or not I buckle under pressure, but I have done very well in the tourneys. If you want to get technical, out of one challenge I fought, I lost that one challenge.
Fact.

Var,
You confuse me a bit, you apologize in one place, not specifically of course, but I took it as general to everyone, then I come to this missive and you are once again berating me with the religous fervor of a zealot. Mayhaps the Draconian's implication that you fear another loss to me rubbed you the wrong way?
Yeesh, and people call ME moody. Next time you post a general apology, try and remember to put TO EVERYONE BUT ADONAI on it.
And actions of a child? I'll refer you to something a wise new duelist once posted. Try to remember that when arguing with an idiot....that he's not doing the same thing.
Goodbye Var De Medici-Giovanni, I believe that you have completely proven to me now that not only are you a hypocrite, you are completely unsalvagable as a friend or a man in my eyes. And theres no reason to respond to this. As I have no further intention of trying to at least get you to understand MY side of things, you've proven your far to narrow for that.

Adonai,
The apology was posted after careful thought, and after the posting you have read. I again, apologize. I didn't mean to come past as a hypocrite, for the apology was posted after the posting you read.
Again, I am terribly sorry for the misunderstanding. And no, though we have had disagreements, you have always been a great dueler. Honestly, I'm not afraid of challenging you, as you aren't afraid of dueling me.
I can't say this enough, Adonai, for the misunderstanding, but I'm sorry.

Baphe? Adonai? You guys make me sick. Maybe Var has others views than you do, being a good friend of his, you aggravate him, you aggravate me. I know if var challenged he had good reason to, let me state this again so you two can get the cotton balls out of your ears.
Var challenged Leto because he doesn't know him very well, also to avoid challenging a closer friend. Var didn't challenge Adonai, in my opinion, because if you challenge the same person twice, war is in the making.
Also, I know that Var is probably even more corteous and cautious and Honorable warlord than Adonai, the baron...and Bapheloc who got angry at me for Fancy Dissing him in a duel, when everyone calls it a DIS it's a disengage, meaning no harm, than the two of them put together over a hundred times.
Ok, this is Adonai and Baphe, no you guys are going to think I'm Var's personal body-guard. Well, I'm not. I haven't even spoken to Var that much lately as a friend let alone politics. I am just standing up for a friend under fire.
Adonai, while we're at it, try and take your diapers off.

::Not wanting to encourage, or discourage Tom's words, not even wanting to answer everything directed at him, he just posts, thinking his words will be picked apart::
One more thing, which I want to clarify.
I said in my previous message that I don't know whether or not I buckle under pressure, and I want to restate what I said. According to my standards, I don't "buckle under pressure". Losing a challenge, to some, would think that I do.
Respectfully,
Var Medici-Giovanni

Warlord Tom,
In regards to the comment about the Fancy Disengage of our one and only duel between us in which you beat me; Excellently done. It is in a psychologocial aspect of the sport the ultimate "Dis", becuase it only beats one move and under whatever reasoning you figured there was a good chance I would thrust that particular round. I did and you did it with graceful style. Yes, I was angry, not neccessarily personally at you, but with my preformance
as a dueler during that specific match. I look forward to further duels with you as you seem to be a one of a few with some descent skill around here.
In regards to your defense of Warlord Var; everyone has the right to thier opinion and to chose the sides they wish too. I will not condem you nor chastise you for your friendship with Var or your defense of him. I just have quarrel with Var if he plans to be a title holder of this sport and I happen to find, IMHO, fault with his career and intentions thus far in regards to the title holders of this sport. If Var could impart upon me any wisdom
of reasonable justifications instead of the smoke screen he is using, IMHO, then I might be willing to give him another chance.
I am not saying Var owes me anything or he has to prove anything to me as if I am someone important. However, if he were to successfully become a title holder, and he continues with his current and past ways as I see them, then I would be inclined to see that he was removed from such title post haste.

Warlord Var,
As a potential title holder of this sport, you disappointment me. Defeat in one challenge is not the reason, for I myself all the way up to even Baron Jeffery Oakenshield have failed atleast once before in either trying for a title or eventually losing one. Your inability to challenge properly is definitly one of them. But to challenge when you could barerly maintain the rank of Warlord, even losing it through the challenge process?
Forgive me, but IMHO as it is and not everyone else's neccessarily, someone who wishes to be a title holder of this sport should be more then someone who can barely maintain thier Warlord's rank. A title holder I believe should be someone known as a solid consistent dueler. You do not appear as such to me. Then with your public spewing of ideas and words to other title holders, I find you not a positive example of a potential title holder. Your
a brand of new school dueler that I find has tarnished the honor and integrity of challenges of titles and treatment of title holders. Again my opnion, as I see it. Should you remain the same and you gain a title I shall endevor to see you do not maintain it for long.

Pens a short query tacking it to the board.
Baph, laddie. Hast thine memory so failed thee that thou hast forgotten the Baron, Lord Ford Prefect's record? Thou might also inquiry of the Baron Adonai his hopes for one of his 'students' prior to the last warlord's tourney.

The mercenary peered at the boards for a moment. Chuckled as he spotted Jona's post. A wide grin on his face as he remembered his winnings from the last tournament. "Four months stay at the Golden Ivy, free shot at Uziel... along with the bragging rights, not to meantion this ring." The elven whistled, ressuming his lean against a nearby post with a thoughtful grin as he awaited the opening of the dueling rings.
