Patrons of the Arena...

Please bare with me, this is mindless babble. Freedom of speech? What does it mean? It means we are free to express our opinions about anything we want. In other words...we are free to insult everyone and tick everybody off. Browsing these boards I still see the continus slander going back and forth between everyone. Lately, it's not been as bad, but it is still there. Why? Freedom of speech, and nobody cares. As long as said people get thier
opinion out in the open, they care not about what people will think. My thoughts...if you haven't got something nice to say about somebody, don't say anything at all. I am all for freedom of speech, but sometimes, just because you have the freedom to express yourselves, it it really nesessary to say what you have to say? As an example say...dueler A challengers Baron A for X reason, dueler B doesn't agree and decides they *must* speak out.
Dueler B knows full well what dueler A is going to do upon reading the opinion, and 99 chances out of 100, will respond in kind. To which, Dueler B always takes offense, and thus begins the long stupid word war to make the other seem like an idiot. All because we have freedom of speech.
Let me ask everyone, how many posts to this old corkboard are actually important public news, and how many are just plain old stupid fighting over who is in the right with thier opinions? I don't even read this board anymore due to all this junk. Who poss news anymore? Once in awhile there is a challenge notice up here, and the occasionalinvitation to a wedding or a birth announcement. Unfortunatley, there is more garbage on this board than what I
get in my mailbox each day.
So, what am I getting at? I'm issuing a dare...or a challenge, what ever you want to call it. To anyone who plans to post on this board. Think about what you have to post. What will happen when others read it? Is it *that* important that you need to risk upsetting half the community? 'course, some don't care who they tick off. But for the most part, the general populas of RhyDin is really good people...they just let the speech thing go to thier
heads. Anyway, before you post, ask yourself...is it really worth it? What are you hoping to achieve? For those of you who are trying to make another look like a fool, remember, it is better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt. Personally, i think the person who cn take an insult on the chin and pay it no mind is a better person than most.
Now I'm not perfect, and I have taken part in these stupid arguments myself, but I am tending to stray from them...trying to practice what I preach, so to speak. I also know that, *somebody* is going to go ballistic over this post with a "how dare you say we should think before we post..we have freedom of speech!" Well....my opinion towards that isn't worth saying.

Thanks for reading....

::leaves a small note::

Well said and I agree, but my word may mean nothing due to that fact that i am a new commer here. The ones who have been here since the start say we have no respect! Except for a small few, who are my peers, i have gotten no respect to start with. You may think that respect must be earned but it seems here that it is a one way street. What i think nobody will care so these words are just a waste....
You are right about freed of speech, it is just a bunch a bickerin' and stuff.

::sighs heavily, copying a few lines from a post to preface her response::

Now I'm not even going to start on the old-school/new-school debate that's touched on here. I'll just say what I think, short, sweet, to the point, and necessary...at least from my perspective.
If you say yourself that "what i think nobody will care so these words are just a waste", you're right. No one in their right mind can give respct to someone who doesn't respect themselves. The longer you claim that your words mean nothing, the longer it will take others to see past it...even when you finally realize the worth of your opinion, they'll still cling to the "oh, it's from so-and-so, and can therefore be discounted" mindset.
That's freedom of speech. You say what you want and everyone else reacts in kind. Rants get rants in response, insults get more insults, and politeness gets politeness. What's the reaction you want to see?

"With Freedom comes responisbility."

Unfortunately, I can't remember whom to attribute the quote to. However, it doesn't matter, as the quote is true. All freedoms have their corresponding price in responisbility. The freedom of religion brings the responsibility to respect the beliefs of others. Freedom to bear arms means using those arms responsibly.
In a like manner, freedom of speech means the responsibility to know when to keep your big fat mouth shut.

Does anyone sign their showings of free speech via the boards known as posts anymore, or has society driven everyone into being so scared of retribution they opt for secret proclamations?
