I have already stated that I disagreed with Lupton's observance of this custom, in another stack of missives. If you will recall, you and I had a brief discussion about whether or not this practice is in fact traditional.
It is precisely because of your note, and a few other notes and comments heard in the basement, that I felt the issue of what is and isn't a "rule" should be addressed.

I still believe the challenged should set the date and time, but this has always been within reason.
Using Drey as an example, he said he could make it. He said it'd be difficult, but he could make it, and he did.
If he had been entirely unable, the time would have shifted.
