Challenges can be done out of respect, Sartan. While they almost always include "friendly" challenges, they are not limited to them either. Note the challenge to Dalamar by Topaz, for just one example. My challenge
to you was along the same lines-as well, admittedly, for political reasons-but I held no animosity towards you, which is a lot more than I can say for the two individuals I've issued challenge to since then, Damien and Magnus. As far as Eros's two challenges, well once,Eros came away with the Warlord's Tournament shot, why should he have refused it? Only two people in the history of the duels have ever refused the shot. As Sid said, he was in awe of
Dalamar's skills, however, he did want the Overlordship, and well...there was only one course someone who wanted that mantle could go.

I may be incorrect but I think more than two have refused/declined to claim the right to challenge.
I am a little rusty on the this and cannot seem to locate the records but I think a member of House L-L declined to challenge, Karnafexx has declined and recently Cas Maxim. I even think there may have been one or two more.
Perhaps a person with better historical resources could help me out here.

He did not actually refuse the challenge opprotunity..I believe I'd seen it written in these papers somewhere that he was ill at the time, and regained his health just shortly after the 30 day limit for him to challenge.

I have not observed this in her myself. She is a bit touchy, but then so are many who seem to find fault with her.
