Koy liked the new dojo, even if it was run down and located in a shady part of town. When she looked at it, she didn't see a creepy and disgusting place, she saw potential. She also saw it as another excuse to throw herself into something so that she would have even less time to spend thinking about her past life with her family that still haunted her.
With Ria's permission, she had stayed after-hours to finish waxing the floor, which now looked decent enough that she could move on to another part of the dojo. Her next task was going to be the windows, but she needed more supplies and help for that, and even she did need at least a few hours of sleep. Dragging herself home, one hand tightly gripped around the small carving knife that was the only sharp object she had on her, she headed for the
Boutique and collapsed on the couch. Like every night since the disappearance of her husband and daughter, her sleep was restless, tormented by their faces. Tonight, to add to her already twisted dreams was the face of the boy they had found murdered outside and Jack's words about the probability that his parents didn't care. The comment had wounded her, because she knew that on the slim hope Lirisa was still alive after Mikal's murder (at least
she had heard rumors of his death), she could very well be wandering around living a lifestyle similiar to that of the slain boy. And the thought of Lirisa lying in a pool of her own blood, with people musing about the cause for the clean slit in her throat and deciding that her own mother didn't care about her grieved Koy. She had exhausted all her resources to find them, there was only so much she could do, wasn't there?
Constantly full of doubts about everything concerning the two of them, it was no wonder she had so much time to spare to play Ms. Fix-it. At the Boutique she had only one or two pressing orders at a time to deal with usually, the Outback was only open four nights a week, and so the rest of her time she spent either keeping up on her Ranger training, playing around in her greenhouse, or wandering from one bar to the next. Anything she could do that
would either occupy her mind or put her in a room full of people was welcomed. Fixing the dojo was just another way to help her stay busy.

Waking up after a horrifying dream where Lirisa's face had merged onto the dead boy's body, she shook her head, now used to functioning on only a few hours of rest. After washing up and preparing the fabric she would need for Ria's order, she went outside to her tool shed to get some provisions. Loading her wheelbarrow with some extra cans of paint she had left over from renovating the Boutique, some brushes, her
tool box and other random items she found, along with a basket of some goodies to eat, she made her way to the Marketplace.
In the early morning light, the place was already starting to brim with activity as the different booths opened up. Her own store had once been located in a tiny tent, slipped between the local butcher and the resident tanner. The smells that greeted her every morning while she worked there gave her good motivation to buy a building of her own outside the Marketplace in order to do business, and once she had made enough money sewing and selling
her custom design clothes, that was exactly what she did. Still, she frequented the place often, trading gossip and wares with the other shopkeeps. Nodding hello to those she knew, she steered her wheelbarrow towards first the florist and then to Benny's Glassware.
After a good twenty minutes spent haggling, she emerged from the Marketplace with a small bush of white roses and several glass panes for the windows. The flowers she had paid for, while the glass she had gotten in advance of a payment of two silk blouses for Benny's wife, along with a bottle of coconut butter massage oil that Benny had lowered his voice to ask for, blushing. Wheeling her way towards the dojo, in the sunlight the place didn't look
so frightening, just sad and worn down. That was pretty much the way the whole area appeared, but there was only so much she could do at one time.

Bringing the wheelbarrow inside, into the changing room which she had adopted as her own tool shed, she left everything there except for the rose bush and some gardening tools. Those she took outside, straight into the park at the spot where the boy's body had been. Koy couldn't believe how desensitized everyone seemed to be to the slaughter of a poor young boy last night, but she couldn't get it out of her mind. Although the thought of Lirisa
being dead was not one she cared to dwell on, she knew that if such an unthinkable thing should have happened, she would have wanted someone to care. And so, in an attempt to at least set something to right, she busied herself with yanking out the surrounding weeds and transplanting the rosebush in the ground where his blood had dried. When she finished, she mumbled a prayer to Hodierina and Urrem'tier, the Elanthian goddess of life and the god of
death, and left two small figurines at the base of the bush. One was an unicorn, the other a scorpion, the emblems of the two gods. As she stood up and surveyed her work, she only hoped it was Elyhaar, the demi-god of Urrem'tier and bringer of an easy and sweet death, if such a thing existed, who had taken the boy. Eliciting some strange gazes from the few locals who passed by as she headed inside, leaving the roses as a small tribute admist the
weeds she couldn't get to today. She had enlisted the aid of Kheldar in working with the windows, and as she went into the changing room to get what she needed, she wondered when he was going to get there to help her.

It was the sun, which had just risen over the tree line near his house, that woke him up as it almost always did. After turning over in an attempt to gain a little more sleep he remembered his promise, rolled outta bed and sat up. Grumbling because he was late, he pulled a new clean shirt over his head, put on a pair of shorts and pulled his boots out from a box lacing them up. Not his normal outfit, but Koy had said
something about fixing and tools so he figured that they would be doing some kind of construction. As an after thought he grabbed his tool belt, which he had been using while fixing up his new house earlier in the week. With that he locked the place up and took off at a jog toward the dojo figuring he was already late.

Late he was too. When he made it to the Duel of Fists temporary home, It was already at least half an hour after he was supposed to be there, and Koy had already started trying to loosen a window pane from its frame. She wasn't having much luck as he arrived and apologised for being late, then listened to what she had in mind for the day.

After a quick look it was pretty obvious that the windows would need to be replaced, not just the glass, but the frames as well. It would be a lot of work, but she seemed to want to do it, and he had nothing better to do. Figuring if they fixed the place up they would get more people to stick around and fight he agreed. Once again using Pathfinder to go next door and "borrow" some stuff from the workshop, he pulled out some planks which they could
use for new frames, and the two got to work.

Once it was brought to Koy's attention that the frames were going to have to be scrapped as well, the two of them got to work on peeling away the rotting wood from the grimy glass that looked as if everyone had given up trying to clean it ages ago. That task alone took up a good portion of their time, but several splinters later, they had managed to completely remove the windows without breaking theglass, allowing the dojo to begin the sorely needed process of airing out. After taking a short break and chowing down on the sandwiches Koy had brought in her basket, they were able to start from scratch with the windows. The frames for the single-hung picture windows were fashioned out of the wood Kheldar had conveniently "found" next door. Nailing the wood into place in the spaces they had cleaned out and securing the sheets of glass was a difficult and painstaking ordeal, made all the more complicated by the factthat they needed to stand on ladders to be able to reach. Koy had chosen panes of blue tinted glass from Benny's, thinking that if the scenery outside the windows wasn't going to be very pleasant to look at, at least the dirty streets would appear a bit brighter thanks to the aquamarine hue of the glass. The color was a bonus, but the best part about the windows was the fact that they actually could be opened, which was quite a contrast to the onesthey had removed. The light of the setting sun that came streaming through the open windows splashed the floor with color as Kheldar and Koy surveyed their work. The wood still needed to be sanded, but that could be taken care of later. For now, the new windows that they had installed were a vast improvement. And just one of the many that were to come if Koy had her way.

"Why don't we work on the roof next?", was Koy's question when he asked her what they were going to do next. Other than the fact it would take just the two of them forever and a day to fix it, he couldn't think of any other reason not too, and when he brought that up, she went right to work on recruting others to help. So he shruged with a little grin, "Your the boss, see ya tomarrow then". She went off to work on
recruting help, he went off to find something else to do until he was too tired to stay awake.

They wern't supposed to meet until the afternoon to plan or maybe work, and that gave him a few hours to find supplies when he woke up. He had worked construction before, it was a natural profession for him, and he needed to make money somehow. So first thing in the morning he took a run over to see an old friend. He had worked with Durnik a long time ago, before he had purchased his own company, and still helped his friend out whenever they were
short handed and trying to make a deadline. So it seemed like the place to get some the supplies they would need.
He got a real good deal, he had to call in a few favors and offer to help out next weekend but Durnik was able to get him enough left over material from a job they just finished and wouldnt be able to use for almost nothing. He gave them the location of the dojo and Durnik said he would have the materials delivered later in the day. With that he took off to pick up a few more things they would need.
An hour or so later he made his way to the dojo, carrying a ladder, a few extra tool belts and his cooler from the night before with his lunch in it. After putting the tools away Durnik arrived with the cart of materials and he helped unload them behind the dojo. Once his friend left he sat down agienst the front of the dojo to eat lunch and wait.

He woke up the next morning sore and tired. It was to be expected after what he went through the night before. But he still got up. His right eye was almost swolen shut, his shoulder was still bandaged up probably dislocated, and pretty much just banged up, as being on the wrong side of a challange match could do to a guy. Rolling out of bed and rolling his neck a bit before finaly standing up. After changing his
bandages and his shirt he made his way to the dojo.
Koy had talked at least two people in to possibly helping him, so he got there early to get ready for the makeshift work crew, as he was to be somewhat of the foreman having being the only one with experiance. So he started hauling the materials up onto the roof, while he waited for the help though going was slow due to his injuries.

Some people would say Rix had no sense of direction, after all, he was always wandering places. Rix would tell you differently -- he always got to his planned destination, just not through normal routes. At any rate, he did arrive at the dojo in the early morning.
Rix wasn't a frequent visitor to the Outback (or any other place serving as the temporary home of the Duel of Fists) but he has a lot of free time on his hands. He could do all the household chores later in the evening anyway. He wouldn't be able to cook a world-class meal, or do all the laundry, or even clean up around the house as he was almost obsessed with doing, but those duties would only be put off for a few days, Rix hoped.
Besides, he was talked into doing this. At least, he was fairly certain he was . . . Koy was speaking way too fast for him to fully comprehend everything she said. Besides, she said she'd give him free sandwiches.
Rix spotted Kheldar hauling materials on to the roof. Seeing he was having a little difficulty, Rix decided he might as well take on that task and leave less strenuous things for the others. So he began assisting Kheldar with his current job, and then he would do whatever he was told to do . . . Just so long as he got his free sandwiches later.

Koy had picked herself to be the leader (or something more like the slave driver) of the small crew she was slowly putting together in order to help accomplish her goal of making the dojo habitable. Of course she was going
to throw herself into every task that needed to be done, but as the boss and founder of the project, she gave herself certain benefits, such as taking her time getting to work.
Business at the shop was her main priority this morning as she sat in her workshop, cutting and sewing. When she felt she had gotten enough of the order done to reward herself with the chance to go and work for free on the dojo, she packed more of the sandwiches she had promised and headed down the now familiar path to the seedy
part of town where it was located. It seemed food really was the way to a man's heart, or at least an effective way of getting him to do hard manual labor. Heading into the dojo first in order to tidy up and leave the food in the back, she made her way back outside once she had opened all the newly installed windows. Grabbing some of the materials Kheldar had provided for the job, she carefully climbed up the ladder, a bright smile on her face.
She couldn't expect her workers to be happy if she wasn't, now could she?
"Hey guys, how's everythin goin? Kheld, wha should I do?" Koy had to defer to Kheldar on this part of the job as he seemed to have a better understanding of what was required than she did. Pulling herself onto the roof, wary of where she stepped as she had an idea of how weak it was, she took a closer look at Kheldar, clucking her tongue. "Goodness dear, ye look like ye've been ta the Void and back, wha happened ta ye? Ye sure ye can handle
this today?"

Re: Making Repairs
Date: 6/21/2000 7:53 PM Central Daylight Time
From: Melissa Appleton
Dawn broke through thin white curtains to the sounds of a crowing rooster welcoming the morn- a rooster with especially thick, deep vocal characteristics. Another RhyDin day shone quietly onto smooth, brunette hair splashed across a pair of feather pillows. A low mumble from between the sheets showed disturbance at sunlight's intrusion; two hours proved enough extra rest to give the young woman within no more excuses
to remain asleep.
Bare feet touched lightly on the floor, rising onto thin toes as Melissa's body stretched fully, accompanied by a prerequisite wake-up yawn. The pink nightgown floated lazily as she moved to the small bare patch of floor in the room's center, between the non-functional lamp, thoroughly shredded couch, and the, thankfully, restful bed. Sensei Kinoshi would likely disapprove; one could always live with nature if unable to provide for oneself.
Living off a parent's money and calling it being "independant" was a paradox; such things easily destroyed mental peace and focus.
Settling back into kiba dachi, reverse punches snapped out, pulled back to chamber in perfect form. It was a compliment to repetition that no mistakes came from her distracted mind.
The scar played back into her mind repeatedly. What could an illiterate man with no voice do with himself? Fine doctors had visited during her mother's illness, but despite their advanced knowledge and skill, the young woman resigned herself to her sense that such a wound could not be healed. Knowing the routinely coughed-up blood was not due to some internal injury was small relief.
Kicks snapped forward as another voice floated about.
"To achieve enlightenment, perform all good and avoid all evil."
"Each path must be walked separately; many lose their way by following the path of another."
Who was she to interfere with the injured's wishes if he desired nothing but battle? It was his path. Helping him was the right thing to do, if such an action came the peace of being one with all, not a selfish desire to be a hero. Stomach churning, she knew it was her wish to give aid, not his to receive it.
What if I am a part of his path?
What if I simply want to be?
Low blocks swung from shoulder down as the word, "Why?", grew exponentially in her consciousness. She had no desire for him. In all other respects, he was in no way different than anyone else. What in her needed to help him so badly?
Morning drew towards noon, room heating up from the intense summer sun. Her exercises complete, Melissa pulled the nightgown from her thin, strong frame resignedly, tossing it to the bed en route to a relaxing shower.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The dojo's neighborhood held a far smaller feeling of intimidation in midday, although "safe" would be far from her chosen word for the area. A thin black blouse clung gently to the young lady's shoulders, dark slacks drifting about her legs; her work clothes made up quite the dressy outfit by most standards. From a distance, she spotted Koy's exceptionally large helpers carrying, hammering, and affixing the stacked pieces of wood to the dojo's
roof.
Still adrift in a personal world of thoughts and confusion, Melissa took the next slab in the pile and hefted it under one arm, carrying it up the ladder to the real workers.
Somewhat suprised everyone actualy showed up, he was pretty happy when they did, dispite the dissapointment from the night before. He shrugged of the questions saying they could talk about it later and explaining to Rix and Koy what they had to do.
Once Melissa showed up and he and the other two did not have to keep climbing down the ladder to get more stuff as Melissa could only be persuaded to help carry supplies. The group after a little bit of work actualy got halfway decient job, covering a good third of the roof by the time everyone stopped for Koy's sandwiches, and close to half of the roof was done by the time they decided to call it quits..
They didnt really decide the next time they were going to work when they left, and that they'd talk about that later. It was looking like another good day without any rain and they might be able to finish all of the roof but the very worst of the weak spots, which was going to require some special attention. Then they all said there goodbyes and he took off to home, planning a short nap before dueling time, but ending up sleeping well through it.
