A plan for departure

Aja stood in her office at the ship yards, mumbling to herself while reading the bank records for the last few months.
"Everything's good." Aja threw the paper onto the desk and settled on the edge of her desk to start going over the new purchase orders. Aja glanced out at the harbor at the several large ships in the process of being built to the size and specs of the buyers. And then looked over to the three ships the crew was going over and modifiying to her satisfaction. She smiled happily for the first time in weeks. They were almost finished.
Rico walked in and smiled at her.
"Someone's in a good mood."
"Yeah, I suppose I am." Aja set the orders down and turned her full attention to her first mate and friend.
"Well, those first four ships are done and ready to sail off into the sunset as soon as their owners come get them."
"Excellent." Aja glanced at the calender. "All ahead of schedual too. Ya all deserve a raise and the afternoon off."
"The afternoon off? Are you feeling ok?"
"Yes, yes..I'm fine..Just been thinking that after the attack everyone's been busting their butt trying to get this place in shape and productive again. I fear working everyone too hard."
"They wouldn't dream of working any other way for you, Aja." Rico took the chair in front of her and watched as she chewed on her bottom lip a bit while thinking.
"Well, just the same. Let's give them the afternoon off."
"About those other three vessels, Aja." Rico started carefully. "You know I would never pry, but what are you planning on doing with them?"
"Sailing in them, of course."
"When?"
"When all the other ships in this yard are finished, When I hire a new crew and manager to work in them while we're gone."
"Gone?"
"Gone." Aja smiled at Rico's puzzled expression. "Go, give the guys the afternoon off and then we'll go discuss the plans."
"The plans?"
"Yes, and grab Parker, Alon, Christoph and Tiramen for the meeting." Aja walked around her desk and sat in her chair.
"Tiramen? The cook?"
"Yes, you intend to eat my cooking? You're either brave or stupid, Rico hon."
"I don't know what you're up to, Aja."
"You'll find out soon enough." she smiled as she watched him shake his head and walk out of her office. 'Soon' she thought...'Soon, we'll be sailing the waters and I will be home.'

Aja stood staring out the window of her bedroom. Huma sound asleep behind her. She knew the time would come that she would have to tell him she was leaving, but she didn't know how to find the words.
"Soon, my dearest husband..." she spoke the words quietly, not wanting to wake him. "Soon, you will have to do without me. I wonder if you'll be alright alone here in this house? Or if you'll return to your homeland? Only time will tell my love."
Aja walked away from the window and headed downstairs. She found Maria in the foyer talking to Rico and Alon. The trio turned and looked at her suddenly.
"Aja."
"Hey Rico. A little late for a visit, don'tcha think?"
"Yeah, but I am worried about you." Rico smiled a bit uneasily.
"I suppose you are, I have no idea why." Aja came down the stairs and looked around. "Maria, ya seen Merlin today?"
"No I haven't." She answered quickly watching Aja closely. "When are we planning on leaving, Aja?" Aja stopped her search to look up at Maria.
"And I suppose they told you everything?"
"They did. So when are we leaving?"
"We'll discuss it later. I have to find Merlin right now."
"The Wizard?" Alon's innocent question made Aja laugh.
The group searched all over the house, in closets and cabinets. Rico and Alon searched outside while Maria and Aja searched the upstairs.
When Aja went back out into the hall she saw Rico standing there looking grim. She shook her head slightly when he looked up at her.
"No.." Aja held a hand to her mouth and came down the stairs slowly to see the box that held her beloved pet. After a moment she looked up at Rico and barely whispered. "Bury
him."
"No problem." Aja walked past Maria and Alon, back up the stairs and into her room. She pulled back the covers and snuggled in next to Huma, who woke up.
"What...?"
"Merlin's dead." she said quietly. He shook his head as if to wake up.
"What?"
"Merlin..is dead."
"Oh honey, I'm sorry." He held her close, as she laid there silently going over everything in her head.

She stared at him for a long time. Wondering. Thinking. How had this gone past her notice? How had she missed such a detail? She hadn't even considered that fact. Aja shook her head and walked away from Rico. He was right, she knew. But the anger had settled in and would threaten to over run her control at any moment if she didn't get away and get a handle on it.
The baby. Could she leave the baby behind? The question spun around in her head several times. And she was no where near an answer. Aja knew the dangers of bringing a baby aboard the ship on a long journey, she didn't need Rico to remind her. What if they were over run by pirates? The baby couldn't fend for itself and she'd be vunerable to a fatal attack. He was right, but what kind of mother would she be if she failed to protect it against
mauraders, or if she left the baby with Huma?
Aja slammed the door to her office, and sat in her chair staring at the wall. Parker had circled the possible due date on the calender. Another reminder that time was running out. She had to cement her plans and she had to do it fast.
Parker stepped in quietly, as he had done many times in the past weeks, and checked on her. His worry for her and the baby evident in his soft grey eyes. He had seen the exchange between her and Rico, and worried that her blood pressure would be too high. Aja knew he was doing what she had hired him to do, but it made it no less annoying in her angry state.
Parker made a cursory examination and exited not wanting to be on the recieving end if she lost her temper. Aja sighed, she knew the guys were looking out for her, but there was no way they could have understood what it felt like carrying this life inside. Feeling every movement, every little kick. And they couldn't comprehend the hell of being asked to consider leaving it behind.

Ballentyne. A place she had dreamed of since she first heard of it. AJ spoke so highly of the place he knew as home. Aja should have understood, but did not. She knew she would have to return, to see the place with her own eyes. To walk the lands, and feel the emotions that the land stirred. It was home.
Home. A word Aja had never placed too much value on. She had never known a home. The Quistguards always moved, from place to place. Seeing much of the land but never making any attachments to it or the people.
AJ had spoke of Ballentyne many times. Telling her of the people that resided there, of her family. She had always listened with detached emotions, never knowing what the feeling that welled up when he spoke was. Until the baby, she didn't understand the importance of roots.
She thought of AJ, Sher and even, Serm. Family. Aja got up and paced the parlor thinking over the word. She had never known how to act towards her brother and sister in law. Her emotions stayed guarded, trusting the solitude, rather than the love. Aja thought of the recent nights in the arena, watching AJ from her corner table, considering her own behavior to him and those around her. Change was called for, but how? Where to start?
Home. Aja would start at home. A place she should have known, a place that would welcome her with open arms, for no other reason than blood. A strange thought to her indeed. She needed to be able to let all the evil she learned about people go, to learn the ways of family. To become a true member of her own, she must go home.
And then she thought of Huma. Her new family. He was so unhappy. She knew he didn't want her to go. Aja knew no other way, but she worried about how he would do without her. She feared he'd climb into a bottle, or something else just as foolish. Which meant the baby must go with her. She hated having to take their child, but it was for the best. And she knew that if he stopped long enough to think about it, he'd understand. Or, she hoped he
would.

Aja stood on the stairs and looked at the paintings on the wall. Works of art, collected from places she had been. Memories of another life.
The portrait done of her on a ship, the one she had commissioned of Maria,
a more recent painting done of Huma and her. All beautiful. All reminders of the life she had made.
She sank down onto the stairs and sighed. A noise brought her attention to Maria standing at the bottom of the stairs looking at her in concern.
"You're troubled."
"Yeah. You could say that." Aja smiled a bit at Maria, but let it drop when she noticed Maria was not amused. She watched Maria for a moment and took a deep breath. "You know I am going to leave here soon?"
"Yes, Aja. I do. And I will go with you." Maria stated more of a fact than asked a question. Aja sighed, knowing argueing would be useless, but trying anyway, she said.
"Someone has to take care of Huma."
"He took care of himself before you, Aja. He'll be fine. I am not as sure about you, however." Maria looked at her with what Aja referred to as the "Mama eye".
"Maria. I'll be fine. "
"I wish I could believe that."
"Maria. Honestly. I can take care of myself."
"Oh?" Maria smiled and chuckled a bit. "That's why when you hired me, there was hardly a thing in the cupboards and you were stick thin?"
"So, I don't cook."
"And you forget to eat." Maria grinned and Aja chuckled as she ran a hand through her auburn hair.
"Alright, I'll give you that." she stood up and walked down the few steps to where Maria was standing. "What do I do about Huma?"
"Lord Huma is a grown man. And a warrior at that. I doubt he needs a wee woman to look after him." Aja considered what Maria had said and looked at her as she added. "You, on the other hand, can't seem to make sure you take care of yourself."
"Maria."
"I know. I've heard all the arguements, Aja. But I have come to care for you as my own, and I'll not have you trasping off to some land you've not seen without me." Aja reached out and patted her shoulder and smiled.
"Always keepin me in line, eh?"
"That's what you hired me for, and it's something I love to do." Maria touched Aja's arm. "I worry for you. That baby has not been easy on your head. You've been preoccupied lately."
"Always thinking as of late, Maria."
"I've noticed. I believe Lord Huma has too."
"I know. But if he has, he has not said much."
"He's a pround man, Aja."
"Too proud to talk to his wife?"
"Men are different creatures, my dear. Proud, stubborn, and full of the idea that they need to deal with things on their on." Maria smiled. "Kind of like a certain young lady I know." Maria winked at her and wandered back to the kitchen.
Aja wondered if she'd ever have that much wisdom. Looking around her house, she doubted highly that what she was considering was wise. Only that it was necessary.

"Aja?" Rico called her name again as he closed the door. She looked up at him startled.
"Yeah?"
"Where were you?"
"Thinking. What do you need, Rico?" Aja was slightly embarrassed being caught in such a state of unawares. The dark haired man sat down across from her and smiled a little uneasy.
"Dreaming up baby names?"
"Something like that." Aja shuffled a sheaf of papers and then looked at Rico.
Her friend for the last decade, he had become a reliable first mate and a stellar friend, but somehow Aja doubted she could tell him everything on her mind these days.
"Aja, the lead ship is finished. The other two are being worked on as we speak. Would you like to see the progress?"
"Lead ship done?" She was surprised in a small way. She hadn't expected it to be finished till next week. "Yeah, let's see what you guys have been hiding from me for the last three weeks." She recalled the way the men had kept her from inspecting the vessel, always sighting that she had to be careful with the baby, and it was unsafe for her.
Aja followed Rico out the door and took his arm when he offered it, as they walked up the stairs leading to the deck. Alon stood off to the side smiling proudly.
Aja took a slow walk around the deck, checking things over, the crew stood by and watched her anxiously. When she started down the stairs to check out the galley, Rico, Alon and Christoph followed. She took in every detail, every now and again she'd point to something she didn't like and look at Rico. He'd make notes in his notepad and continued to follow her.
When she reached the Captian's quarters, Aja stopped in the door way taking in the room. The men had modified it, the room was roomy and in the corner was a crib with a colorful mobile hanging above it. Aja looked back at Rico, the awed expression making him smile.
"Well, I realized that no matter the risk. You couldn't leave the baby behind."
Aja didn't know what to say. Taking another look at the room, she smiled.
"Rico, you guys have truely out done yourselves with this ship. If the others look this good, I am more than pleased."
The crew beamed and Aja's smile dropped a little as she thought. 'The time was arriving quickly, do I have everything in order?' Aja walked off the ship and went back to her office. As she opened the door to her office she was greeted by Huma.
"Hi babe." he said with a smile.
"Hi darlin, What are ya doing here?" Aja stood still and looked at him, more than a bit surprised.
"Thought I'd come spend some time with you."
"You never come to the yards."
"Well, I figured I best find out what kept you from me everyday." his smile was sad, Aja smiled uneasily and shut the door.
"Ah. I see. Well, then. I suppose it'd be fine for you to stick around for a while." She kissed his cheek and took her seat behind the desk.

They rode home in silence. Huma stopped in at the Dragon's Lair and made sure all was running smoothly. The recent attack on him, left him more cautious. And Aja knew she should be glad for that, but she hated the way he now looked at everyone in a suspicious manner. Everyone a potential enemy, every unusual noise in the bar, throughly investigated.
They arrived home and Huma handed the reigns to the stable hand and led Aja into the house. Maria greeted them as they walked into the house.
"Dinner's ready."
"Wonderful. Thank you, Maria." Aja smiled at the woman and turned to see Huma going upstairs. "Are you coming to dinner?"
"I have some work to do. I'll be down in a while, Aja." he didn't even look back at her. She looked at Maria and shrugged a bit.
"Well, I guess it's just us."
"Is Lord Huma still troubled by the events at the bar?"
"Yeah. It keeps him up at night." Aja sighed and walked into the dining room. "I'll give him some space."
"We'll be leaving soon, no?"
"Yes. Very soon. The men finished the lead ship. It's gorgeous, Maria. They even expanded the captian's quarters to accomodate a crib." She smiled at Maria. "And they must have hired someone to decorate, cause it's very tasteful." Maria chuckled, and Aja looked at her curiously. "I take it you knew this already?"
"That I did. Rico pleaded for my help."
"Ah, sure..Everyone knew about this but me. Is that it?"
"Fraid so, Miss Aja." Maria smiled at her and set her dinner on the table. "Now eat before it gets cold."
Aja watched Maria walk into the kitchen and sat down at the table alone. Looking around the dining room, she noticed how silent the house had been lately. There were times she still felt like she lived here alone, and she wasn't sure that anything could be done about that now.

Aja sat at her desk, staring at the paper in front of her. Maria brought her tea and sat it down.
"Troubled?"
"Yeah." Aja put the pen down and looked at Maria. "Trying to figure out how to say goodbye to my friends here."
"You'll be returning, Aja."
"What if I do not. They will never know how much I admired them, or appreciated them."
"So tell them that."
"I know. I just don't want the messages to be boring to them."
"Speak from the heart and you can't go wrong."
Maria wandered out of the room and left Aja to compose her letters.
