Shift in the Winds.
Hand in hand, together, we walked along the cobbled street alone.
The tangy taste of rain just about to fall from the chainmail gray skies
above, a distance roll of thunder, the sounds of our boots as they struck
the ground in unison.
The shop store windows shuttered, the lamp lights flickered dangerously
as the rising winds threatened to extinguish their precarious existance. The
feel of his hand in mine, his palm and fingers rough from dueling; but gentle
and comforting.
The scene was so vivid and it filled my every sense. Warm rain began to
fall as the first thought that something wasn't right entered my mind. Sheeting
the cobbles in an instant, the colors of the world seemed to melt into the sky.
"Nothing lasts forever."
It was me that said the words, I didn't know why and somehow I knew that
Rix wasn't going to reply. He had been silent throughout the entire journey
through the deserted streets of the town.
"Forever is just a fantasy."
I could feel his hand slip away from mine. My fingers flailed to retain the
grip or perhaps to catch the last moments of contact. By the time I turned to
look, he was gone.
The wind shifted, the rain ceased to fall, the colors of the world puddled
by my feet in swirls of crimson, blues and grays.
When I woke the next morning, the whole world seemed askance. The
hues of my life just a bit faded, I was not ready to admit to myself that my
enduring conviction that Rix was going to return to me was crumbling.
The winds had shifted that night, there was talk of the odd change of
weather in the Inn; the gossip had that it portended a earth-shattering event.
For me... that had already happened and it seemed that this was a sign
that it was time to begin to reshape my life... but I was not ready.
