"It must begin with you," he thought to himself. But what did that mean? It was all very confusing, Percy knew that much. "You have studied the past, and you respect it." That was true, but he still had no idea what this was about. It was about one MacKenzie or the other, but how?
The impression he got was that if he did something, the right something, then either Tynsdale or the other MacKenzie would return to the DoS. But which one? That was a very important point right there. They were two people, and if he made the wrong choice, he could commit to the wrong course of action. He had to avoid that if possible.
It came back to one question though. What was so special about him? Why had he been chosen? He was not the only one to respect or even study the past. Far from it, there were those better versed than he was. He had not known either MacKenzie well, he doubted that either one would remember him. So why was he chosen? What was there that made him the one that it all had to begin with?
"Why me?"

He looked up from the letter he had just written to Kalamere. Hopefully the answer would be coming before too long. He needed the information. It had something to do with this mystery, he was sure. He just didn't know what.
The 5th ring. It was all about the 5th ring. But was it about the ring itself? Or one of its holders? The visitor had spoken of MacKenzie, but he had not meant Lord Tynsdale. Yet the MacKenzie who was in the histories as the holder of the 5th ring was Iain MacKenzie, Lord Tynsdale. Stranger and stranger.
Could the histories be wrong?

He finished reading Kalamere's reply, and nodded to himself. That was what he thought. There was definitly something unusual going on. The question was, what?
He decided to post part of the letter, as it would be fairly informative. It went into details that were not included in the histories. Particularly about Yasafel's challenge to Kalamere.

Anyway.. as to what I know about the fifth ring, there is little I can tell you that isn't in the histories. I was the first to hold that ring, having won it in the tournament or rings. The duelist I defeated was Yasafel, who took exception to my use of a fancy sidestep in the last round. As you may remember, the rulings on the use of fancies changed
at the same time that the Baron rings came into being. Prior to that, under the old system, it was considered a breach of etiquette (by some) to close a duel with a fancy. Due to Yasafel's exception, he was also the first person to challenge for that ring. We faced each other again shortly after that and I closed the duel with a slash, rather than the fancy sidestep, out of respect for the warlord's reason for challenging.
The next to hold the ring was Xenograg. He had placed 10th in the tournament of rings, earning himself the right to challenge Max, the Overlord of questionable sanity. Despite intercession by Siera RedWin, Xeno had taken the throne. The barons had a week to declare alignment to the new Overlord. I declared myself renegade and issued challenge. There was no intercession in the match, and I was victorious.. Xeno took the ring in exchange for the
Crown.
The next person to hold the ring may be of some importance to you. Xeno's first challenger, and the one to whom he lost the ring, was Ian MacKenzie. It was not, as the current state of the histories suggest, Lord Tynsdale. Iain of Tynsdale had not yet appeared in the realm of RhyDin. Ian MacKenzie, King of New Caithness, was the 3rd to wear the 5th Barons ring.

As the wraith faded from view, Percy looked at the short note on parchment that it had given him. His hands shook. His blood ran like ice in his veins. This was bad news.
Things were going to get worse before they got better. This wasn't a matter of an old timer or two coming back. This was a matter of all of RhyDin, maybe EVERY RhyDin, being destroyed.
One thing was certain.
Things would get harder before they got easier.
