Neutral Decisions
From: rolandsal@aol.com (Roland Sal)

DoS Community,
I hope this missive finds you all in good regards. At the moment, it appears everyone in the arena is taking a Pro or Anti-Dalamar stance, whether they admit it or not. The Baron's rings have turned to a strict political title and I nearly lost a friend over them.
With that in mind. I'd like to officially take the stance of Neutral. I hope to present the image of a fence-sitter, showing that you don't have to be politically Pro or Anti-Dalamar to have fun or a voice in the duels. I'll do my best to present that image in hopes that others may follow the lead.
Yet, I have pledged my loyality to Dalamar. He will always have my blade, life, and friendship if needed, both inside and outside of the rings. As I believe my loyality runs deeper to him than titles and politics.
I have promised him this; the current Overlord should never feel his title threatened by my blade, never. I will do my best to present the image of a neutral voice in the rings, and will keep out of the physical natures of politics.
Good fortunes always,
Roland Sal Roa

The commoner quirks a smile, taking the quill she pens a note, tacking it to the corkboard.
M'lord Roland Sal Roa,
Thine path chosen, walk it as well as thee didst walk the path of Loyal. For thee do well know that this path is the one most fraught with hazard. Thine pledge given, I have no doubt thee shall strive to honor thineself, thine ring and the duels.
May the Fates guide thee, my friend.
Jona.
Common as they come.

I still don't understand da Neutral rank at all.
Da reason yer a baron is ta be part of da challenge scene.
If ya wanna be a community leader, ya nae need a ring. If ya just want da rank, ya nae deserve da ring.
I guess I'll never understand bein' Neutral in a political system, especially when da positions are so few.

The confusion on neutrals is one of the many reasons I chose this stance. No one, as of yet, has stressed their neutral allignment in these rings and survived the challenges that come with the allignment. Thus, the community really has no basis on exactly what a neutral Baron's role in this community is, as no one has really jumped to take that role.
Some believe Neutral Baron's are those that are out of politics all together, fence sitters. Some believe Neutral Baron's are those that would keep the peace. Mediate between Renegades and Loyals.
I myself believe strongly in neither. Neutral Baron's, in my opinion, are more of a third party in the politics of the rings. They may agree with both sides on different matters, then perhaps disagree with both. The allignment is left to those that will not raise there blade in these ring's politics, other than their own challenges, yet keep their rights to voice an opinion.
As a Neutral Baron, I will voice my beliefs as I see fit. Not in defense or attack for/on the two different groups, but as how I feel. If that brings me into the 'challenge scene', fine.
As for the comments on community leaders. I hold my views dear to me, even if they are subject to change over debate. I hold a very visual rank within the Duel of Swords, if I can use my title to aid in expressing those views... I will damn well do it.
On a final note: The leadership rank of Baron brings about a duty to the community.
Good fortunes, and good dueling,
Roland Sal Roa

It seems yer just as confused as ta da true purpose of da rank as I am Roland. First ya say ya want ta present da image of a fence sitter, dan ya say ya don't believe its what Neutrality is in baronies. Ya say ya don't believe neutrals aren't here ta just keep da peace and mediate, but ya say dere a 3rd party...well what's left fer 'em ta do? What does a 3rd party usually do if not mediate or keep peace?
>>As a Neutral Baron, I will voice my beliefs as I see fit<<
You don't need ta be a baron ta voice yer opinions. Here in is my argument. If ya have no desire ta be a part of da duelin' part of da "challenge scene" den ya can take part in it from da rank of Warlord and let someone more willin' ta partake assume a barony.
Many Warlords and duelers of lower ranks post opinions on da boards, a baron's ring doesn't give ya anymore of a voice, it does give ya more options when a challenge occurs regardin' da Overlord.
>>I hold a very visual rank within the Duel of Swords, if I can use my title to aid in expressing those views... I will damn well do it.<<
Is it really da rank Roland, or perhaps yer presence? Jonalyn is nae a baron, yet she is able ta voice her opinions equally effectively. When Laird Iain MacKenzie posts on our boards, making valid points as he usually does do we dismiss 'em because he is no longer baron?
I never said NOT ta speak up because yer a baron. I said ya don't need a baron ta speak up. And I said neutrality serves no purpose because in our current system, alignment is soley reguarding stance ta da Overlord, and options when a challenge match occurs.
I guess I can sum up my argument by sayin'...
"If yer not takin' a side, yer just takin' up space"
And in my argument space is denoted by a baronial ring

Baron Oakenshield,
Under our current rule, the Overlord has expressed his views on neutrals. That being fence-sitters. Yet he does not enforce it so strictly that he would regulate my allignment on conflicting or simular beliefs which are only spoken of. Why? Because I have neither raised my blade for or against the Overlord.
Under your first claim of my words, you left off the portion that should have been in bold, that being: I hope to present the image of a fence-sitter, showing that you don't have to be politically Pro or Anti-Dalamar to have fun or a voice in the duels.
The third party I refer to is those that wish not aid either side but there own. In that I mean physically raising your blade against someone for political means.
You quoted me on this statement: "As a Neutral Baron, I will voice my beliefs as I see fit.." Never once did I meantion anything about others not voicing their own opinions. I'm stating this as I will not back down from my beliefs merely to keep my allignment.
You quoted me again with "I hold a very visual rank within the Duel of Swords, if I can use my title to aid in expressing those views... I will damn well do it."
Which you replied: "Is it really da rank Roland, or perhaps yer presence? Jonalyn is nae a baron, yet she is able ta voice her opinions equally effectively. When Laird Iain MacKenzie posts on our boards, making valid points as he usually does do we dismiss 'em because he is no longer baron?"
You chose the wrong people to finger out on that one. Both of them have earned their valued opinions. Jonalyn is a Queen, Iain, a lord. Two highly active members of this community, whether it be with the league or arenas themselves. You can not honestly tell me you would value a strangers opinion more than you would a person of proven ability and knowledge, can you?
I am a Baron of the Duel of Swords, as are you. Anyone looking upon these boards for the first time will pay more heed to someone who is visually active and of supposed proven ability. I'm not saying you have to become a Baron to have a voice, I'm stating fact.
I'm a little confused as to what you believe a 'challenge scene' is. As I will probably come under more challenge than you this next year, if we are both fortunate enough to keep our titles.
Yet, you are right. I, like evryone else in the Duel of Swords, are a little confused on the neutral rank. Yet if we don't test it, how will we ever be able to come up with a final decision on the matter?
My pardons if you have found insult in this, as it was not my intentions. I value your opinions and do hold them close to heart when making my decisions.
Good fortunes always,

I feel I should correct this, Roland. The very first one to take the neutral alignment (The Nameless Dueler) took the neutral stance. He seemed to be a fence sitter, as we rarely read his thoughts on the boards.
While maintaining the fence sitting demeanor, he faced but one challenge; the one whom he won the ring from, Lucian. The Nameless One managed to succeed in his challenge, and he kept a basis of his neutral alignment.
He retired the ring, because, according to his retirement letter, he did not have the time to put into the ring, and he wanted the next holder to do so.
The neutral stance though, is as controversial as honor. Everybody's vision of honor and neutrality varies, as there are so many aspects.
Just thought I'd state some information.

Baron Roland,
I am moved by yer words and thoughts on the Neutral position. I liked how clearly your thoughts reflected my own, although if I ever ever get a ring, it does nay reflect on what I would choose as my alignment. Change is inevitable. But tis so true....and I quote ye, "The third party I refer to is those that wish not aid either side but there own." We
all 'ave to stand up for what we believe in...and me belief is that ifin ye can nay go into something whole-heartedly, then yer really nay only cheating that party but cheating yerself as well. I quote ye again, "They may agree with both sides on different matters, then perhaps disagree with both."
I can share yer perspective in this matter and I am sure ye 'ave good reasons for testing the waters of Neutrality.
Regards,
Marit Takcouma.

Baron Sal Roa posts...
"On a final note: The leadership rank of Baron brings about a duty to the community."
Perhaps the only thing I found sensible about this whole situation...
As has been said, if you agree with the Overlord... if you support him with more than half your being... you are Loyal and should declare as such. If you disagree with the Overlord... if you find his policies, his person or his dueling to be deficient in some way... you are against him and should declare Renegade. If you find your opinion strongly divided... if you truely cannot settle between these stances... -then- you should declare
Neutrality. You should also declare Neutrality if you wish to have -no- political stance... which, of course, is possible.
These are, of course, my own opinions on the subject and should not in any way be taken as the rule of law.
Finally... The prominent stance of -anyone- who spends large amounts of time in the Arena gives with it an obligation to the community. Something I myself have tried to live up to.
I thank you for your time.

As she passes back through, she glances once more to the boards and laughs.
"Fence sitters!" she mutters, then swings out the door, adding, "Aye, until a birdie drops something on the head."
