Notice to the Public
From: morganfay@aol.com (MorganFay)
Date: 26 Jan 1999 11:37:49 EST
I made a promise many months ago that I would never again keep from the community matters brought before the baronial council.
I thought it pertinent that the public be notified of the machinations employed to affect the way the duels are run and the exclusionary tactics used to dictate what sorts of people Jola deems as fit to duel here.
Jola Savage has taken it upon herself to demand that Golden ban children under the age of 14 from legally dueling within the Red Dragon Inn's Basement Arenas, threatening him with higher action if he did not comply to her demands.
Golden asked for feedback from the Baronial Council. It is important to note here that the Baronial Council has no real jurisdiction here, but I believe Golden wanted to see what the general reaction on a small scale might result. I have complete and utter faith that Golden will not impose age restrictions, or any sort of discriminatory restrictions, upon this sport; however, I did not appreciate the secrecy that Jola has tried to enforce on the
Baronial Council. She has refused to allow parents and children to participate fully in this discussion, even when their fate and standing within this community has come under fire. I believe that parents and children of this community have a right to confront their accuser(s) and deserve equal voice in objecting to oppression, blatant discrimination, and inappropriate elitism.
Some of the members of the baronial council support Jola's discriminatory demands. I ask each of you to find out where members of the baronial council sits individually as the council is supposed to serve as a barometer of the community.
I realize that the community is divided on this matter and I also realize that people have their own codes that they live by. However, I believe it is up to us to decide whether we will duel a child in the ring, and not the powers that be. If you do not want to duel children, do not duel children. Otherwise, leave the decisions on appropriate ages of dueling to the parents, the children, and those willing to teach and duel the children with no
prejudice.
Respectfully,
Morgan du Cornwall

Children dueling is absolutely ridiculous, and I'm not positive what is wrong and twisted within the minds of parents who not only allow their small children to enter the ring of combat with a sword wielding warrior, but encourage it. My four year olds are not allowed to handle knives, yet daily I witness children as small as two being hacked, sliced, and torn to pieces in the rings. Do they heal? Yes. Do they win?
Sometimes. Is it right? No. If I were to beat my children with my fist, they would heal. Is it right? Of course not.
Dueling children is child abuse. I could never bear to pierce the innocent flesh of a toddler with my blade. I could never watch my children of four become victims of thrusts, cuts, impaled and maimed. Permanent? No. Painful? Yes. What mental and emotional trauma derives from constant abuse to a very young child?
"Leave it to the parent." It is obvious parents are not capable of this decision. They are as neglectful and abusive for allowing, and again, encouraging the abuse of their children as the ones wielding the blade. I would never send my child to war before he even has all his teeth. Would you?
I commend Jola on her action. Many state they wish to teach their children dueling before the age of fourteen. My children are learning, but they have a lot to learn before they will ever pick up a blade. Combat is more than swinging a sword, and I mourn the children who duel now without the proper education outside slashing and hacking.
If you wish to begin teach your child the ways of dueling before he reaches fourteen, that is fine, but keep him from the rings. I will now offer myself as an instructor for any parents desiring dueling education for their children, free of charge, with the agreement that their child will not actually duel until the age of fourteen.
This flagrant abuse cannot go on. I bid Golden, the Council, and anyone else who loves children to fight and fight hard for a stop to this awful situation. The abuse cannot go on.

Lupton~~~~
For once on these boards, I find that I am in full agreement with the sentiment you so eloquently express. My Brianna is 14 now and, in spite of her age, she (and I as well) still feels that dueling with a sharpened blade is more than she is ready for. When she and I practice together, it is with padded blades or staffs, even if we happen to be practicing in the arena where the ward will heal. Some day she will decide that she is ready to duel
with a true blade. I think I've raised her well enough to feel assured that when she decides that, I'll be agreement with her.
I know that, from this mother's perspective, I can't bear to see my daughter in any unnecessary pain... emotional, physical or mental. I firmly believe that the emotional and mental trauma that could be incurred from dueling in the arena isn't something that any parent would wish for their children..... or something that we as a community should be encouraging.

Morgan
First may I thank thee for bringing this matter afore the community at large. I believe ast doest the Baroness Morgan that the parents and the children of this community have a right to confront their accuser(s) and deserve an equal voice in this matter.
The following wast mine initial reply when I didst first learn of Madame Savage's proposal.
*****************************
Gentles
Ast the mother of three bairns, stepmother to a fourth, godmother to other bairns, I certes appreciate concern for children. Yet for annaone to e'en consider the banning of children under the age of fourteen smacks of the beginnings of discrimination. Tis for the parents of the children to decide if they approve. Tis for each duelist to choose whether or nae to step into the ring with against a child.
The members of the dueling team, the Short Swords come immediately to mind. All save Master Jesse Troyan wouldst be banned under such a proposal. The young miss, Rhiannon Brock, a five year old would be forbidden under such a proposal ast would the young Master Ryan Le Fay, ast would be me three eldest, Brianna, Mikhail and Tristian. Ist this proposal perhap insinuating that the Guardian of the Wards of Gondar, Auritan the Meek, wouldst so
neglect his task as to nae permit the healing properties of the Wards to sufficiently keep the young from lethal harm?
Tis where would the discrimination end if such a proposal ist accepted? What races, species and/or genders would be next to be turned away? If Madame Savage hast an aversion to dueling children, tis certes she may avoid doing so. I do wonder that she would make such a proposal, for I do recall her destroying her katana, and stating she would no longer visit the basement though she seems to have changed her mind for she wast seen there most
recently. Perhaps she might put her concern for children into working at the Rhydin Orphanage or perhaps visit the Red Dragon Inn and take in the waifs that wander in. Tis that Madame Savage ist a mother herself, and certes one would hope she wouldst take umbrage were she to be told her children were to be banned from anna activitity they might desire to pursue.
******************************************
Upon perusing Morgan's comments, mine further reaction ist one of distaste in learning that Master Golden Evermeadow wast threatened with higher action if Madame Savage's demands werena met. I join with Morgan in stating mine faith that Master Evermeadow wouldst nae impose such a discriminatory restriction upon those who do enter these ancient and hallowed rings. I, ast Morgan, dinna appreciate the secrecy which Madame Savage seems to hae attempted
to force nae only upon the Council but ast well her seeming attempt to keep such from the community at large. Were such a restriction to hae been imposed in past, Lil' Dan, son of Queen Teleperien and Nomrah Elven would hae been prevented form dueling. Ast Morgan hast stated, certain of the Baron's upon the council aire in seeming agreement with such discriminatory demands.
Tis the use of the word children I shall address first. Tis children of various races and species dinna age nor do they mature at the same rate. Mine twins aire in part elfin, mine stepson be bearing the bloodline of a fully elfin child, mine youngest be half elfin. What 'o those "children" of the bloodline of the short lived races what reach adulthood in a mere span of months, or those of the long lived races and species what dinna reach adulthood
unto their hundredth or two hundredth year? Shall an adult of the short lived species or race be banned from dueling for in that he or she hasna reached the arbitrary age of fourteen years? I, for one, wouldna wish to be the one to hae to order a thirteen year old dragon from the ring, nor for that matter hae to explain to the parent of said dragon the reason t'was done.
Tis ast Morgan hast stated, nae a matter which the Baron's Council wouldst hae jurisdiction o'er.
I shall address Lupton est Dracoern's comments,
Loopy, if thee feel thee canna enter the ring against a "child" so be it, none canst force it upon thee. How thee chose to raise thine own bairns ist a matter t'wixt thineself and thine ex-wife Madame Elgarette, ast tis mine an' mine husband's choice ast to how we shall raise ours. Should Gavilean and I wish our children to duel after instruction, tis our choice, nae that of annaone to else. Should a duelist choose nae to duel one under fourteen
years, prithee how shall thee determine the child's age? Shall thee set someone to check for a birth certificate, or mayhap hae a medic demand a blood sample for testing, or perhaps though wouldst hae the suspect submit to a mind probe, or perhaps wouldst hae the suspect submit to a full medical examination? Or, perhaps thee will conduct a census through out the entire planet, the various planes and secure birth and genetic information about every
single race and species? The only flagrant abuse be that of Madame Savage in secretively attempting to impose what wouldst seem to be her own narrow minded attitude upon the most diverse population of the dueling community.

Lady Morgan, I thank thee for allowing the community to know what is transpiring concerning the issue of children dueling. As ye hath mentioned, this is a subject that has been around for quite a while, and has a strong following on both sides of the issue.
I appreciate Lord Lupton's and Lady Khrysta's viewpoint on this issue, and I am inclined to agree with them. However, I also understand somewhat the argument from the other side of this coin.
I would like to propose that a compromise in this issue (and a permanent resolution) might be reached if the type of weapons used by and against children were to be restricted to non-leathal elements such as Nerf swords or similar materials.
Humbly submitted,
~Auritan

What about species and races that do not age the way humans do? It takes many years for many races of elves to mature, some of them are not considered adults until they are in their thirties.
And what of our types of dragons and were beasts that are adult sized in one year and able to reproduce by two years of age?
This proposal was not well thought out in the least as I have already thought of one such roadblock to this irrational complaint, how many more will it take to find out just how discriminatory this proposal is? I find this distasteful and prejudicial and I am ashamed to be involved with it.
________________________________
Why stop at age? What should we restrict next? Dwarves? Perhaps we should not let them duel because they are too short, or some elves might think they smell bad.
Maybe faeries should not duel either, because they are too delicate and their wings might get torn.
Perhaps we should ban dragons from dueling because the fire they expel catches the rings on fire and puts the duelers at risk.
Maybe we should only allow commoners to duel once a weekend because they do not have the skill and the stamina to duel more than that.
Maybe we should make rules that duelists may not use any weapon other than standard issue. No more spoons, or brooms, or wet noodles, or other various forms of food (like salami, breadsticks, or cheese). Dueling with these items could cause a person to get hurt when dueling an opponent with an obviously superior weapon like a bastard sword, claymore, or battle axe.
Perhaps the best thing to do is just duel your duel and use your own discretion in who you choose to duel rather than force management to make rules that support your own narrow, prejudiced minds.
Where is the line that says our prejudice has gone to far? I am of the thinking it has gone too far the moment we discriminate against someone because of something that is out of their control or what they choose to believe, including but not limited to things like age, gender, race, nationality, ethnicity, religion, or age.

Aislain asked me to send this your way, she wanted to be heard, as well. I believe she is one of the smartest people I know. It is only a coincidence that she happens to be eight years old.
Mon Cher Madame Fay du Cornwell,
How are you? I am fine? Send this letter to the council and Monsieur Golden, si vous plait?
Grosses Bisses,
Aislain
Mon Cher Barons, Baronessessessess, and Monsieur Golden.
My name is Aislain Dulce Uziel, and I am eight, and I am the OverLady Pirate Princess, and I like to duel very much thank you. I a very long time ago, when I was seven, I wrote an essay about why children should duel.
Why Children Should Duel
by Aislain Dulce Uziel
Children are good Duelers because they have legs and arms and heads and hearts and blood and guts and feet and noses and eyes and fingers -- except for some children because they lose their fingers because they use the sharp knife that Marme said never ever ever use to cut the bread. I know this because Ellen told me about one little girl who did not listen to her Marme and cut off all her fingers and
she bled all over her sparkle dress and they could not get the stains out! Really truly!
Children are good Duelers because Dueling is an art, not a brawl. That is what Papa told me. See Papa and Marme told me to duel with a wooden sword. That way I can touch my points but I don't break skin which would be very messy and hurt! Some grown-ups like to use sharp pointy things, and when I grow-up and am a Pirate I am going to use a Cutlass and a Razor!!!
But now I am only a little girl so I use the wooden sword and practice swords. That way I won't brawl which is very rude and you should never be done unless you are at war or you are drunk or you are in a guild or you like pain which makes you a mustache kiss. I know all about mustache kissing because Uncle Jeff has a beard and when he kisses you its scratchy and leaves big red marks! So people who like to kiss mustaches, particularly if the
person with a mustache is also Say Dis. I KNOW this because I am 7. So I suppose Children should not be allowed to duel with people who like to kiss Mustaches or who Say Dis.
Marme and Papa say dueling is a skill and an art and I have a gift! I don't remember getting this present; I am sure I would because Marme always makes me write thank you notes and I never wrote a thank you note for being able to duel. In fact, at my Birthday I got FOUR gifts and I had to write SIX thank you notes because two of them came from two people! I thought this was really unfair, but Marme told me to write them anyway.
Anyway, if dueling is a skill and an art: touching points and thinking much faster than your opponent, then children should duel. If dueling is hacking and sawing and skewering people so their guts spill out all over the sand and you slip in them and fall down bonking your head while getting green spleen juice all over you new shiny boots, then children should not duel. It's too messy and their Marme's would be very cross having to buy them new
boots all the time.
Furthermore, I am a Valheru which means I get to grow very old and powerful and not die until I want to. Papa and Marme promised to go with me when I die so I won't be scared. And Papa magicked me so Garion could not cut off my leg because I wanted a peg leg. That means no one can cut me unless they broke through Papa, and to do that would have to really really want to. Maybe someone could do that in the ring, but they would really have to want
to -- and then I suppose it doesn't matter where I was.
But that is scary so I am not allowed to think about that because I have nightmares and then I have to sleep with Marme and then Prudence gets jealous and she has to sleep with Marme and then Aggy gets mean because he wants to sleep with Marme too, but he won't because he says he is too OLD. So he pokes me while I am in bed and I yell at him and then Prudence starts to cry and we wake Marme up because we are all in her bed and she becomes very very
grouchy and she doesn't let us eat corn cake for a whole week!
In Conclusion, Children are duelists too.
Grosses Bisses,
Aislain
((* Discussions that are rules-based are OOC in nature, and it isn't something our characters should be deciding. Unfortunately, we have no avenue to discuss OOC elements so we must resort to rationalizing the OOC issue into an IC venue, which only encourages players to blend.
The proposal put forth suggested, OOC, that forum management specifically put a character restriction in the rules. This goes completely against the spirit of free form gaming and basically says that someone other than you will have the right to decide what type of character you can run that is suitable, in their eyes, not yours, in this mixed genre free form gaming environment. This time the issue is character age. What will someone propose
restricting you from creating the next time?))

As written to the appropriate parties:
Here's my opinion:
If parents toss their child a sword, and never monitor who they duel, then maybe there should be some law regarding who can be parents. I have dueled children, but I duel gently and make sure they aren't harmed. If their parents show no concern for their welfare, blame the parents.
Furthermore, children are impressionable. You think a child will understand when you say, "You're too young to duel" when their mother and/or father says that they can duel whenever they want?
Yes, there are races where children are supposed to be bred warriors. However, should child x get the benefit and child y not, when both want to do the same thing? That would be unfair to certain children, and thus, prejudice. It would be saying, "Because of X's religion, he CAN duel, but Y can't because it's not in their heritage/religion".
What sickens me most is the fact I have actually seen some arrogant little children run around claiming superior skill. Whose fault is that? The parents.
I agree that something be done in one way or the other, but I think that the root of the problem revolves around parents neglecting their children. I know some parents are truly careful with their children, and to those who are will obviously be dismayed by the fact children can't duel. However, nobody's under proper jurisdiction to say "X's child can duel, because he/she's a good parent, and Y's child can't, because he/she's not."
To conclude, I suggest something be done to protect all children. Some may be warriors, and they can still learn to be warriors. However, because some adults are irresponsibly violent (even towards children), children cannot learn to be warriors through bloodshed in the arena.

With permission from Jaycy, Joel tacks up the gypsy's only word on the matter, and strides away from the boards.
* * *
To Those Concerned:
Here is my opinion, and mine alone. If a parent wishes their child to learn swordplay, let the parent teach their child, in their own home, where the child may be watched and taught under the eye of their parents.
This is a sport, ladies and gentlemen, but not a game. The difference? People can, and have gotten hurt. This is not a place where children may learn a simple harmless game... this is a place where steel and sharp edges are common. Do we want our children to play with knives? To fight with grown men and women, who could very well have no mercy for a child? The Arena is not full of cheerful, loving people, ladies and gentlemen. For every good
person, willing to be gentle, there is one willing to be not.
The Wards don't affect everyone. People have, and could die within those rings. Do we really want to risk that on our children? They want to duel? Let them. Just please make sure it is within a *safe* environment, where they can grow to respect the sport under the proper tutelage. Let them learn among their peers.
Just, please, don't allow them to throw away a part of their childhood, and grow up too soon.
Respectfully,
Jaycynda Ashleana

I can't find my responses. Ah well. Don't count on my support for any new rule against any restrictions on dueling, other than a change in the dueling schedule.

Patrons,
Morgan has finally lowered my opinion of her through the floor, with her flat out lies.
Following is my first letter to Golden, and to the entire Baron's Council.
-----------------
Subj: Children Dueling.
Date: 1/24/99 9:11:45 PM Eastern
To All Concerned,
This is a letter that has been long in my mind to write. It concerns the issue of children participating in duels.
I am of the opinion that children should not be allowed in the arena at all, between the ages of 6 months and 14 years old. However, for many reasons, even requesting thought on such a restriction would be ridiculous.
What I am requesting a determination on, and a rule regarding, is on children actually dueling. Specifically, I would like to see no dueling permitted for anyone under the age of 14 UNLESS their opponent is within two years of their age, AND their weapons are practice weapons.
This would mean:
1) No adult would be allowed to duel anyone under the age of 14. To do so would result in that match being disallowed for the standings. To do so repeatedly would result in being banned from the duel of swords.
2) Children who wish to duel must duel with an opponent who is within two years, older or younger, than their age.
In addition:
1) Any child in the arena must be accompanied by their parent or guardian.
2) One must be 14 years of age or older to attain a barony or the Overlordship.
I know that this will meet a lot of resistance. I am prepared to argue my position in an open forum as needed, or a private forum. I will take this issue as high up as necessary to get a determination made, even if the determination is not what I desire the outcome to be.
One might say it's not up to another to tell someone how to raise their children. I would say that if we don't watch out for the children of our world, our multiverse, then those children will grow into the kind of adults that we loathe today. We must all take responsibility for the lives and wellbeing of children, within reason.
I am certain that my requested measures do not infringe upon a parent's right to raise their child. I am also certain that these measures would significantly benefit the community and make it safer for children in RhyDin.
I am first bringing this to the Baron's Council, and the Supervisor of the Duel of Swords. If this issue cannot be dealt with in a timely manner, I will seek higher court.
Thank you,
Jola Savage

At no time did I state that this was secret. I have discussed this matter, and my letter to the council, in public, in the arena, in front of parents and duelists. This is in direct contrast to the accusation of "...the secrecy that Jola has tried to enforce on the Baronial Council. She has refused to allow parents and children to participate fully in this discussion..."
To whit, I have the following proof in a letter that I sent *PRIOR TO* Morgan setting this note upon the board. Pay special attention to the bold text at the bottom, if you would.

Subj: Re: Children Dueling.
Date: 1/26/99 8:36:35 AM Eastern Standard Time
Greetings again.
I do not expect the council to vote on this matter, I simply wish for the
voices of the council to be heard so that Golden can then make his own determination, should he make one.
As for the letter from Aislain, while cute, it is irrelevant. Children
want many things they shouldn't have, and often have very logical-seeming
arguments for those things. The child's opinion, any child's opinion, on
this matter at this time is irrelevant.
I am not an objective party in this matter. Neither are those of you who
stand on the other side of the fence. I would hope there isn't a person
alive who was apathetic about the well-being of our children.
For those who have not noticed, I do not duel children. Nor do I allow
my children to duel. Nor do I allow my children to watch duels. I do not
allow them to "play duel" outside of certain strict limits, either.
I will tell you why I do not allow my children these things.
Children take many years to understand the difference between reality and
fantasy. How must it compound things when they see, in the rings, people
being hacked and gored, and then healing magically? This isn't a common
occurance in most places, it is only by grace of the ward that this occurs
at the Arena.
Children play what they see. They will play dueling. Hopefully they will
use play swords. But what if they do not? What if they use even a stick?
It has been largely laughed at when a mother says "Watch out or you'll
poke someone's eye out" but it is a statement based on fact.
I want my children to know that if they hurt someone, there are
consequences. I do not want them to be confused and think that if they
hurt someone, that someone will stand back up again as if nothing
happened. What a horrible burden to put on a child!
Children should be children. If they wish to duel, they should duel
against other children, where they are not witness to adults maiming each
other for sport. I am all for starting a children's league, where those talented children can duel against each other. They could have their own rankings, in fact. A Junior Dueling League as it were.
Which brings to mind this: Would you allow your children to watch and
participate in a bullfight? Cockfight? A Duel without a ward? Skydiving?
Drag racing? Drinking contest?
Just what is the purpose of allowing the children to duel against adults? Who does it benefit?
Incidentally, I don't mind each and every ((legitimate)) letter of this discussion put to the public. I did not do this because I feel the Baron's Council is representative of the public at large, and a smaller forum of discussion might be conducive to a more reasonable, and shorter, discussion than one would have were there hundreds of people speaking their minds. The Baron's Council is not in a position to vote on this issue, I merely
seek to be heard and considered.

I shall state this,
Jola's letters are as they state. She has not kept this feeling nor this subject silent from the public. I have seen and heard her numerous times dicsussing the subject in the Public Arena numerous times. I have discussed this in the Arena with her a long time ago, also, before this was brought up to the council.

The entire problem with this proposal can be summed up in one sentence of Jola's letter.
> Notably, I would change it to "age of maturity for their particular race/species" instead of a > general age of 14.
Age of maturity is as subjective from race to race as it is from individual to individual. I'm sure you have all seen examples of a child acting mature beyond his or her years, or an adult acting childishly. (If not, I doubt you need to look farther than this corkboard to find numerous examples.) It is not the place of the officials: a)- to decide what the age of maturity for any species is, b)-to take the time from duels to enforce how old each
particular individual is, or c)-to tell parents how to raise their children. Yes, kids need to be protected. That's the job of the parents, or, should the parents not fulfill that, the job of the local government. The Duel of Swords, though it has politics in abundance, is not a governmental system, and as such it doesn't have the right to tell me what I can or cannot do as soon as I step out the door of the Arena.
And for those of you who are already writing a response that begins "How dare you even imagine you have the right to speak when we haven't seen you duel lately...", let it go. I don't need to hit someone with a sword to know what I think... and I will be involved in hitting people again as soon as I figure out how much to bend my knees when I cut.

Whats the matter, someone got their underwears in a twist because ya couldnt win a challenge duel or get enough peer wins so ya decided goin after the little kids was more your speed? Ah, well cry me a bleedingheart river of wimp.
Well, this here note is to inform y'all that there is no longer a baron council, barons, or overlord, because this God of DoS dont need any of y'all and would just as soon kill ya on sight, so it'd be best to just stay away from my crosshairs. Yer little powertrip status has been reeeeee-voked and Im decreein that every last kid in this realm use you to practice leg waxin and body piercin. And that is just fer starters.
Ive never seen such a prude bunch in my time as a god. Im embarrassed to rule over y'all and Im thinkin the other gods I hang with are playing a practical joke or sumthin. Don't bother tryin to mewl yer crybaby stories at me or try to challenge my authoritay because y'all have already shown what a bunch of yellabellied cowards ya are by pickin on the little kids.
God of DoS happens to like the little rascals so Im gonna go ahead and make another decree and say that any of y'all that got a problem with a kid dueling, well, yer status and rank has been reeeeee-voked and ya aint fit for nothin more than polishin my throne and givin me a little bit of kiss up yes man bizness until ya relearn yer manners and a bit of humilitay.
Theres only room for one arrogant SOB and that SOB is me, and I dont hear myself givin y'all permission to argue with me about it, so settle down.
If ya ever wondered why a god like me can come in here and act all bad and dance all over your stupid rules and traditions, well, Im like a great big badass vulture who feeds on y'alls idiocy and us god types can just smell it when a bunch of y'all stink up the place acting like a bunch of know it all sissies. Now its time to pay the Big Man and ya gotta live with me and my big thumb made for oppression and all that jazz so set down and quit yer
bellyachin'. Im tired of yer impertinence. If yer complainin that means you aint doin yer kissing up duty to me and that, crybabies, is a mortal sin.
Oh, hey, I fergot, I don't really write like this, I just figured I needed to dumb myself down so y'all could get what Im tryin to say without feelin too overwhelmed by my godliness.

Patrons~
I had once had a different viewpoint, but after seeing my beloved permanently injured in these rings, I pale to think what could happen to a child, even if it were an accident.
I am beginning to wonder, shall we allow these children to also run around with swords *outside* of the ring? Shall we hand them drugs or alcohol, simply because it's "not our place" to raise another person's child? No, I doubt it. But we *are* supposed to hand them weapons and let them beat each other senseless because we don't want to look like we're acting as a parent to someone else's child.
It is utterly perposterous to claim that this has anything to do with allowing people of other races and religions to duel. We're talking children here, of any race and any religion. This is a safety issue, and it's insulting that some of you think we are such idiots that would let it evolve to a racial or religious issue.
Also, a child is a child, no matter the race. As Jola had ammended, we're talking relative age here, and to state differently is a frivolous attempt at accusing us of racism. Stick with the issue here, people.
On the other hand, I think a compromise could be attained. Let the children duel, but they must use Nerf or otherwise padded weaponry. Wood, while not as sharp or hard as metal, can still injure. Also, I believe that any adult caught using anything other than padded or Nerf weaponry should be automatically given a forfeit and a loss on his or her record. Since a Baron and an Overlord should have higher standards when it comes to control, perhaps the
subject would be put before the Council to be given a punishment (due to the fact that wins and losses don't really affect them too much) up to and including the stripping of their title. The stripping of title would, of course, be for exceptional cases such as consecutive offenses, undue injury to the child, etc.
Again, if you want your child to learn how to duel, *you* teach them..on *your* time.

This is true. However, it is not outside of the arena that I ask for the restrictions, it's within the Duel of Swords.
And a few other things to ponder:
1) Just because a person has a child does not mean they are a good parent.
2) Where do *you* (any of you) draw the line at intervention? Had someone intervened in my family, my mother would not have been killed and my siblings and I would not have been beaten so severly. Clearly, other people felt as many here do, that no one should tell my father how to raise his children.
Does a child need to die before we protect them?
