She paused before the cluttered kiosk and nudged the man beside her, "Tagren, do you suppose there is anything we need to know beneath those piles of insults?".

The tall, dark complexioned man paused, obviously considering the vast piles of papers that were splayed haphazardly upon the board. "If there is, Coeur, it will not be read by these old eyes."

Her nose crinkled as she glanced disdainfully at the piles again, her arms folding purposefully across her chest. "Do you suppose it is in these peoples' natures, " she paused at the gross generalization she began and corrected, "Do you suppose that it is in some of these peoples' natures to be so venomous and then pretend that the sting was innocuous?"

The man studied a few key papers again before speaking to her, "Coeur, it is in many men and women's hearts to strike out with a false face to hide the fear they feel." His eyes were kind as he spoke the words to the young lady, patient through her constant queries.

A finger thoughtfully drummed upon her chin as she considered the words, "But this is a sport.", the words lingered long, her thoughts still forming and so he waited. The pregant pause followed by,"But if it is more than a sport, why is there no mention of a woven relationship of politics outside this cavern?"

"Perhaps, Coeur, that is a query that can be answered by the observance of those that inhabit these rings on a regular basis?", he refrained from smiling, he was well used to her curious nature.

"Perhaps it is and perhaps we shall."

She had spent well over two hours shuffling through the massive piles, reading and learning of the concerns of this arena. Her eyes hurt, her head hurt, she could have sworn that her brain hurt as well.

"What is the matter with these people, Tagren? Why do they use apostrophes in their writing? What is with these th' and such?", her voice telling of the frustration of trying to translate these written words.

"Perhaps it is a gutter language? Some peasants have not had formal training, Coeur, you should be more patient with those less fortunate.", Tagren spoke from a reclined place by the hearth, his old bones not withstanding the pressures of standing for so long.

"Pah, these words are full of vemon and ugh, what horrid mangling of words.," she paused,"Maybe that is why this one is so twisted with rage? I would be edgy if I were so illiterate as well.", she held up one of the papers she had been studying.

Tagren laughed softly, "Coeur, you are too kind.".

"Yes, yes, Tagren, it is judgemental, but look at this pile of rubbish she produces!", tossing the paper aside with disdain.

"Still, child, you should observe them first hand, perhaps they have more to say face to face.", he spoke with a calm tone(one for which he was reknown.)

Coeur sighed and fell into a thoughtful silence; some these people would stretch the limits of her patience, she knew that well as she knew herself. "Very well, Tagren, I will with hold any judgements until I have listened to them in person. You are right as usual.".

Tagren didn't even bother smiling, Coeur was a fine pupil and would make an excellent ruler some day. This place just might be good for building patience and tolerance of those less fortunate. Yes, this trip would teach her something.

DoS God swooped down from above the rafters, silently landing behind Couer and Tagren. He resisted the urge to knock their heads together like they deserved.

"Heeey there, humble subjects! How ya doin'? Welcome to Duel of Swords!" He said loud and proud. Without further pause, he jumped right into his point for gracing their lackluster lives with his presence.

"I got an idea fer ya... instead of standing here like two gossiping fishwives, why don't ya say what ya gotta say to the people yer bein' all nasty gossipy like ta?" He turned to walk away as if he were done but stopped a few feet away and turned back briefly.

"Oh yeah, forgot to tell ya... I know I look like some backwoods hick from round yonder, and I'm sure ta make some mistakes myself, what with my good ole boy phrases of turn, but ya know," he taps his temple, "I got myself this little godlike ability where I can discern (I like that word, yanno) what y'all's comments look like written out as if you were writin' 'em yerself."

He crossed his arms, lifting his right hand up to stroke his chin thoughtfully and continued, "I'm thinking that before ya start raggin' on others about their literary and grammar abilities, ya might want to know that the way y'all talk it's as if ya got too many punctuation marks in your sentences, yerself, and boy, if that ain't confusin' to others because their sittin' there tryin' to figure out how yer ending yer little snooty comments and
all." He nodded casually.

"So why don't y'all just settle on down and get back to figuring out what yer own personal communication and grammar problems are before gettin' all snooty with the others behind their back? That is unless, acourse, yer too chicken to go right on over there and tell those people what y'all been all snooty about over here."

He started rising toward the rafters, and grinned. "Y'all have yerself a good day now, yahear? And remember, DoS God is watchin' y'all, ready to let y'all know that whenever y'all start actin' like yer better'n everybody, there's sure to be several dummy things ya do yerself, so jes' pipe down."

He smiled, looking forward to the flapjack breakfast and backrubs he had waiting for him made by a few wives he acquisitioned from their blubbering husbands, and disappeared.

Coeur looked to Tagren with an amused grin, "This coming from someone who can not tell the difference between a male and a female. I do not think I have ever been so unimpressed with anyone my entire life."

Tagren laughed softly, shaking his head, "Well, perhaps there are a few people deserving of your pity here after all, Coeur."

She glanced at the old man and the female, chortling softly, "Och, tis indeed some ta pity, 'ere. Thee might start wi' th' lass, sir. Tis seemin' ta' me she be in need 'o somethin' an yuir lookin' a bit too old ta satisfy 'er cravin's. Tis mayhap ye canst escort th' lass ta th' old Inn above stairs, tis th' rooms aire cheap an' there be plenty 'o gullible sots wh' wouldst take ta 'er kind." She cast a sidelong wink to the deity,
"Tis ye git a look at th' lass, wh' be callin' 'erself 'eart. Tis little likeli'ood she hast anna. Ah hae seen plenty like 'er in me time, tis amusin', th' desperation, neh?" A merry peal of laughter echoes in the cavern as the woman tosses a copper to Al, "Show th' baggage th' back stairs, tis certes she hae lost 'er way." With a sassy wink to the deity, the woman shimmers a soft azure, vanishing to tend to more important matters.

Coeur blinked several times at the person before her,"So you are not only illiterate, but rude as well. Where I come from eavesdropping is frowned upon. But from your posts, if one were to be kind enough to name them that, it is clear you are a pathetic creature with nothing else to do but spew insults at those that are, obviously, far more intelligent and skilled than yourself."

Coeur drew in a deep breath, emotion clear in her gaze, "You have my pity, you poor creature.".

That said she turned, Tagren falling in beside her as they moved from the rueful woman, leaving her to wallow in her gossip.

A voice booms overhead, "METAPHOR, y'all, METAPHOR!"

"LIKE fishwives, get it? LIKE!"

A book slams down on the ground next to them. It's a dictionary.

The voice continues to boom, "Read it. Learn it. LOVE IT!"
