~Challenge to the Thirteenth~
From: casmaxim@aol.com (Cas Maxim)
Date: 01 Jul 1999 02:25:10 EDT
The following is at is was when sent to the appropriate parties:
To the Venerable Supervisor of the Duel of Swords, the Standings Keeper, the honorable reigning Overlord of the Duel of Swords, Unagi Miyamoto, the esteemed Baronial Council, and of course, the honorable Baron of the 13th:
I, Cassius Gaius Maximius, have once again elected to challenge for a Baronial ring. And it is with this missive to you that I hereby lay challenge to the Baron, Sir Magnus Eques, for the Thirteenth Baronial Ring of the Duel of Swords.
First and foremost among the reasons for me to challenge is my desire to cross blades with a powerful and talented warrior such as the Baron of the Thirteenth.
It is my assertion that Baron Eques has proven his mettle in the rings, in his previous Baronial reign having defended the Ring successfully no less than 5 times,
against such skilled and experienced duelists as Jesse Troyan, Lord Eros Hunrai Marzanhe DeBurgo, a former Overlord, Unagi Miyamoto, the current Overlord, Avery/Alexander/Jarem Shiv Blade, and Mornlythe shena Jor'ethan. I feel it would be a priviledge and an honor to duel with this Baron.
My particulars will be as they have been in all other Challenges I have been involved in. I shall duel underneath the banner of the Roman Empire, a double-headed eagle holding bundles of arrows in the clutch of it's talons, surrounded by a half-wreath of olive, underneath it all the Latin letters "S P Q R" inscribed in gold.
I shall duel with the gladius Imperator. My Lady of Honor will be, as she is now and forever, my lovely wife Laylla Angelique Maximius. My Second will be named at a later time.
Now, I'm gonna try something here: Nobody likes being on a peer win list. So, maybe I can post these peer wins in a manner that brings honor to the accomplishments of those who are on it....

Hey, since Drey beat Liptin and Cassio was next in line with a valid challenge, doesn't that make Cassio's challenge about as valuable as the cobwebbs in the corner of the Arena?
Or are facts getting mixxed up here?

A temporary honorary Baron is allowed to be a peer win? That's disgraceful.

I am sure that if you looked carefully at the Peer Win list, E, you would have noticed that eleven were listed. I would say it was probably done to forstall complaints such as this one.

I'm surprised you didn't say anything when I used Khrysta as a peer win myself, E. She has more dueling experience than a couple current barons, was wearing the ring, used the respectful maneuvers, and was recognized by the community to be the baron of the twelfth ring. So my question is:
Why is it disgraceful?

I didn't notice your peer win list cause I wasn't looking at it Var. I find the use as Khrysta as a peer win to be disgraceful that while she may have won a tourney to gain the honorary title, it was a tourney of other commoners and less than Warlord duelers. Nothing personal against Khrysta, or her skills, but by definition of the sport she has never been considered a "peer win".

E~~~
I would be the first to agree with you, in that I am not a ~true~ peer. My skills are such that the highest rank I have yet attained is that of Master At Arms. Obviously, I have not the skill of a Warlord. If I had such, I would be one. The use of a Peer Win against me, I think, was done by these two worthy gentlemen out of their friendship to me. Both know that I've teased in a semi-serious manner for many months about just "wishing that I
could be a Peer". As well, both used eleven Peer Wins on their lists, ten of which are of the needed true level of skill so as to be definately above reproach... The eleventh, me, were placed, I believe, to give me a bit of joy at "finally being on someone's list". If only ten had been used, with me included, I could understand your complaint, and indeed I probably would have mentioned it myself in that circumstance. But neither used only
ten.....
Where is the disgrace in that?

Khrysta Wulfgar showed more grace in winning the right to bear the Eighth Ring, e'en that the title and her being elevated to the peerage be but a temporary honor than manna a current warlord what dost hold the rank.
She most graciously didst permit the now deceased Ron Strude ta depart the tourney and awaited his return when she might well hae accepted his offer to forfeit the matchs unto her. The only thing disgraceful here be thine questioning her right ta be named upon the list of bona fides presented.

There is one slight correction, and I'm sure that now that the rings have been returned to Jeffy and Alex it makes no real difference in the way of things.
The Baronial Ring that I was honoured to hold for a short time was Alex's.... the 12th. Ron, as the first place winner, was given the honour of holding Jeffy's Ring, the 8th. I just felt I should clarify that small point for all.

A question fer Elijah,
How is one considered a peer? Record? In a sport which classifies its duelist by record, save its upper ranks, anyone with 15 WoLs is a peer. So its upper ranks must be classified differently, correct? If it *is* done by record I have seen many a baron under 15 WoLs who should not be peers. If it is done by respect or given because said baron/baroness *earned* his or her ring den Baroness Khrysta *certainly* deserves ta be considered a peer,
because she did indeed earn her ring.
You don't bitch and moan with other barons, with less dan 15 WoLs, are used at peer wins; why are ya giving Khrysta a hard time Elijah, what is yer justification?
Eagerly waiting,
~J

Elijah,
It was very explicitly stated before the tournament even began, if I remember correctly (though I could be wrong at my age), that the winners would count as peer wins if defeated by a Warlord. Likewise, as at least one person has stated, Khrysta certainly embodies many of the finer qualities of the Arena and the community. Since the 11th peer win was used in each case, I do not see a problem with honoring Khrysta as a worthy opponent. Many a skilled
duelist has trouble advancing because they are 'hard to beat' and not 'steady winners' for reasons of style. Several come to mind.

As the White Duke happens upon another note posted under the headline he stops and scratches his beard, realizing he never did make any comments except those regarding Khrysta. He quickly pens one, using his ballpoint and notebook paper.

Cas and Magnus,
Good luck to both of you. Do your best and duel a gallant battle. May the best man win. I am sure that both of you will use all of your skill and cunning in the duel. I suppose, if I must choose, I would like to see Magnus win. For old time's sake, amongst other things.
