Hello my friends, I've created this archive here on the grand corkboard for those of us who love their swords. This archive is open to all, a place to spin the tale from whence your sword came, give a detailed description, or tell us how you came by it. Sword and dagger smiths, please feel free to advertise your craft here. You never know when someone might want a jewel placed in
the hilt, or need a knick repaired. I wish you all good health, and Mystra bless.

My simple Merchandine Dagger's story is quite old, and is a gift from a dear, dear family; the thought of this stirs up many unpleasant previous occurences of my life that I don't feel capable yet to explain to most in a way that would be understanded to the fullest. I've not been always without my sight, but for a good part of my life, I've dealt with it fine. The eve of my loss was also the eve of the loss of my
family, my, clan, if you would, and of my surroundings. If you care to hear a bit about my life before I was this old oddball of a man, feel free to call on me, though it will take some time for me to vent it out. I'm not, never will, and have never regretted my life, or questioned the events which have occured, it is simply my tale; anyways, back to the blade. This dagger was crafted by an Elven family, I was quite little when I was granted it, it
was an heir loom given to me for goodluck in the years to come. Its charm has obviously worked its magic, I having found my way here. It is an extremely well-crafted blade, and it has a long, tiring history, so much so, an entire 'diary', or scripture of its past has been recorded and past along; in an apparently -rare- dialect of elven. I haven't had a proper time of using the language in awhile, but I have not forgotten it; however, no one I can
find, or no one scribe, can translate it into braille text. There is a wealth of information about my history, and its history hidden in that book. Any help?
::Scribbles an ugly, but meaningful smiley face underneath::

Well wishes,

Coron.

Dear Sirs and Madam's,

My blade "Chuck," used to be nothing special. It was simply a run of the mill long sword I somehow had with me when I arrived here. However, after a few weeks of dueling, the blade cracked. I triped and fell, cracking the blade... I didn't notice the damage, and by the end of the duel, the sword was fataly wounded, you might say. So, I contacted Roland, who had placed an ad regarding sword smithing, and I ordered two small sabers... they never
were worked on, to my knowledge. Not Roland's fault, was all mine. So I simply used the practice swords in the arena. However, your here to hear of "Chuck," so let me continue. I gave the sword to Fyn McTege, a friend of mine, who spent a few weeks working on it. I figured he would somehow repair the blade... but he practically forged a new sword! Wonderful weapon. Its beautiful! He did some thing with diamond dust in the blade, so it
shimmers, and keeps an edge better than anything I've seen before. Doesn't scratch at all. Very well weighted, and some jewels I can't identify on the ends of the crossguard. And a huge diamond pommel. Very nice. I'm afraid to use it in dueling, though. I escort merchant caravans, and we are attacked often. "Chuck" will either cut through the brigand's swords or will cut deeply into them. And the people here seem to deeply love thier swords;
I'd hate to break one. So I think I'll only use "Chuck" on special occasions. Or, I'll only fight people who's swords are likely to withstand it.

At your service,

SaRandal De'Lamana

The fairly monochrome old man eased himself into a wooden rocking chair as haggard and gnarled as he and leaned back, his stalactite of a beard cascading down and melting into his chest like a sheet of ash gliding down a mountainside with all the lethalness and beauty of an avalanche. The motley assortment of children congregated violently around the grey figure as pups would fight for a mother's teat, voracious for the
knowledge he would surely supply. But with a flash of an eye and a stern look a calm fell over the children and only a flicker of motion remained until the youngest at last claimed a seat at the front. The elder then creaked forward to a lean and spoke.

"See the sword in that yonder wall?" He began, guiding the children's earnest stares with a sweeping gesture to the thin blade half immersed into the far wall. "That is no ordinary sword, my children. In fact, it is extraordinary." His voice was weak yet pleasantly throaty.

He paused for a moment, smiling beneath the tangle of whiskers. The children were enchanted. "It is said that the sword was crafted long ago--thousands of years--by the master smith Fitzgerald who devoted his last years to this insane and cancerous endeavor. For you see, children, Fitzgerald was then allied with the territory of Cephia, known for its sadistic and lustful despot, Legion--a powerful sorcerer enthralled with the study of necromancy.
The sword was to become a symbol of his evil--a universal manifestation of power. In fact, Legion later went so far as to use the blade to execute the subjects of his perverted experiments before he desecrated their bodies. Who knows what horrors the sword contains?" The old man's eyes grew hard and the once-eager faces of the children drew back into blank expressions of nausea and horror. A small boy moaned.

"But I am getting ahead of myself.." The old man's voice was almost reassuring.

"A cloud-choked moon hosted the completion of that wicked blade; the air carried the autumn rank of acrid smoke and the animals were deathly silent. It was as if the world were preparing for something horrible. But nothing could prepare the world for what was to come."

"While the details are sketchy, rumor holds that a demented laugh stole across the villiage that night from the smithy and then suddenly and terribly reversed into a inhuman convulsion of screams." The crooked mass of bone and sinew and beard once again paused dramatically, appraising the expressions of the children to his satisfaction.

"A curious boy--of similar age to yours--happened across the slain body of Fitzgerald three days later while investigating the origin of a putrid and pungent stench. I will not even attempt to describe the sight to you, but I will concede that it was enough to drive the child mad. The sword, however, was nowhere to be found; the villiagers ascribed the attack to wolves, but even wolves are incapable of such atrocities."

"I am ill-equipped to tell you how the sword at last fell into the hands of Legion, but soon after the death of Fitzgerald Legion was reported to have applied the weapon to his dark research. What had initially been a casual interest of the sorcerer's soon occupied the bounty of his time. And as his interest in necromancy grew, so did the extent of his evils. It began as the rare discovery of a mutilated farm animal a few days after a local farmer
would report its disappearance. And then.. well, and then the bodies started to appear. It was initially the thieves, the murderers--but as Legion governed without mercy, that supply was exhausted quickly. Then citizens would suddenly vanish, only to one day appear as an irrecognizible mass of of flesh."

"It was much later divined that Legion was attempting to perfect the resurrection of the dead, but with every minute correction to the process another minute flaw was created. And I think it was the sword"--he briefly pointed to the length of steel extending from the wall--"that goaded him to do it. The sword, hungry for death, fomented Legion to carry out the experiments, fully aware that the process could not fully be perfected. And the sword
knew as well that Legion's frustrations would lead him to try again and again."

"Some say that the spirit of Fitzgerald himself is locked in that blade; that he, through some dark ritual, transfered his soul into the steel that smoky autumn night. And I would not put it beneath him, either, for Fitzgerald--once a war-hero of the Cephian army--was killed in battle some twenty years before the so-called 'maculate conception.' He was miraculously revived shortly thereafter, but who knows what pacts and sacrifices he made to
return to the living?"

"Either way, the terror of Legion's rule continued for years; it reached the point where the peasantry was at the brink of rebellion. But with Legion's spearheading the repression, the peasantry had no chance. It was then that an errant knight happened into the territory and things began to look up for the first time in years."

"Legend holds that a knight in silver armor rode to the castle upon a white horse and disappeared over the drawbridge, which then closed as if to gobble him up. The knight requested room and board for the night and Legion agreed hospitably, showing the young man to a room not far from his own. That night, Legion crept into the man's room and found, to his dismay, that the knight lay awake and vigilant on the bed. Legion recovered quickly and
invited the man to his private study, planning to murder him there." The old man abruptly stopped and yawned, rubbed his eyes.

"What happened next?" A child cried out.

"Ah yes, this is the interesting part. You see, people say that while the two were talking, Legion produced the blade and began to describe it to his guest. Suddenly, Legion attacked; what should have been a lethal blow failed when the blade strangely caught the ceiling of the chamber. The knight saw his only chance and tackled the sorcerer, managing to wrestle the blade from his hands and deliver a finishing strike.--It was as if the blade made
Legion miss.." He trailed off.

"Regardless, the knight was hailed as a savior, and people began to refer to him as 'the Angel' or 'the Seraph,' for his real name was unbeknownst to the grateful peasanty. He left the territory the next day, the blade slung over his back as a reward for his services. And the people of Cephia never saw him again."

"So how did the blade come here, you ask? Well, I believe that the sword somehow corrupted that knight, offering him immortality and powers beyond his imagination in exchange for perhaps five thousand years of his service; after all, the souls of countless men and women were trapped within that blade--who knows what power lies therein? It is my guess that the knight travelled the world for thousands of years, finally arriving here to complete the
last stretch of his service."

"And I believe that Seraph is that knight, that he is finally free." The man paused, this time for good. The children stared wide-eyed at the old man for a moment before rustling to movement. The promise of a spoonful of cream or a hunk of sweet bread was just too much and they scattered off in every direction as quickly as they had congregated, leaving the old man alone with his thoughts. He rose--stiffly--and hobbled to the sword, stopping
before it to examine the hilt.

"Perhaps now your evil will cease," the elder whispered into the empty chamber, eyes lazily fixated on the intricate carvings in the bone-ivory. "Perhaps now it will end."

He pulled himself away from the fixture and climbed up the steps, disappearing into the fading evening.

My blade...

I wield a blade of pure emerald, made for me by my first teacher in sorcery... Marcus Shaw. He gave it to me on the day I went to duel my first duel as a Warlady, and I could have asked for no better gift.
It has no name, for it is more of an extension of my self and my magicks than a weapon. Upon the crossguard is etched a wreath of lillies... the symbology having special meaning for me.
Sometimes, when I seek guidance, I will speak to my blade... for I believe that my mother's spirit touches me through it's length.

I have used only three weapons in the duels. The first was the blade I came to RhyDin with. It was a blade made of crushed emeralds and oriculum, a rare metal able to hold enchantments from the mines of Wales, Terra. It held the spirit of my only son after we was murdered by the Normans which also was the day I died that I first became Immortal. The blade was broken in the Arena on the
mantle of the fireplace during the reign of Leto Covington as Overlord.

I have used a staff, or more appropriately an oaken cudgel at times as well for a variety of reasons.

Now, I use "Draco". It's made from a shard of one of RhyDin most powerful known artifacts, the LyfeStone of Mount Bane, just to the north of RhyDin Towne. It was forged and magiced by the priests and wizards of House Lathadoscia. It is a thin slim very slightly curved long black blade with a black hilt. It resembles a cross between a longsword and a katana in look. There are no etchings or jewels embedded in it, and the crosspiece is straight
from the pommel curving neither away or nor towards the blade. For lack of a better term the Draco is considered sentient, an extension of the artifact it was forged from. Some say it has a certain effect upon me, a dark one, I say it gives me the strength and power to do the things I want to do.

I've got two daggers. They're both normal in the sense that they're perfect. One if named Greenspot, and the other, Rusty. They've been painted yellow because there's always too much blood on them to clean becasue they've cut so many people in the ring.

Of course these two daggers I love more than myself because I have sepnt more time maintaining them than I have patching myself up after dueling. Of course, in the end of a duel, there are always more nicks on the daggers than there are on me.

These are my two joys. I hope they sound interesting on the outside before they go into your inside. ::Draws in a circle with two dots for eyes and an upside down arc for a smile::

True to my heritage and training, I use a gladius. A gladius, a weapon not often seen in the rings, is a distinctly Roman shortsword made of iron, with a brass and wooden hilt. It is designed to thrust, but is more than capable of effectively cutting and slashing. It slants into a trinagular point at the end. Sometimes I have problems in duels with my opponent's reach being longer, especially if they're wielding a longsword, but this is more than
made up for by my excellent control of my sword, mainly honed from spending my adolescence training with it in the barracks.

As for my gladius specifically? It's name is Imperator. It was a weapon made specifically for
the tyrannical Emperor Diocletian, by the hand of a dark, powerful supernatural being from Ancient Egypt named Anubis-yes,the same monster who recently enslaved Jaycynda and nearly crippled me. The sword has some fairly strong magickal properties, which so far I've kept under control. It came into my possession upon my return to the Empire after a long sabbatical, wrenching it from the foul Diocletian's hands after a violent battle between the two of
us.

I have search the land in my youth to know the "Riddle Of Steel" that the gods lay down from there heavens on the battlefield of man. After many years and many adventures again orcs and goblins and trolls and a dragon. yes I and a dwarf fought a dragon and with the help of a priest name marcus we bested this black dragon. I have many wounds allmost to my death they were, But that other story...
Yes in time I began too understand the riddle and it meaning "it the heart of a man that makes his arm strong and causes him to be great as a warrior ,knight, dueler etc. This heart that has the fire to keep going when all others have stopped ...So I duel with a simple longsword I got in the market place here about a year ago... Why a longsword well the greatest sword story I know as a knight is the sword "Excallbur" it too I believe was a longsword
So when I'am dueling I re-call the round table of knights and Camlot....
and a wise mage name merlin..his words "for it is the doom of man that they forget..."

Attached to the list of duelist's swords:

Cygnet Seraphin Gnimoi carries two blades,
one a sterling silver butterknife kept tucked in her boot like a scottish black dagger. The butterknife is simple in design with a smooth handle that fits perfectly in the angel's small hand. The knife, once named Onida, was renamed Antioch by a friend of the duels.

The First Seraph also carries the rapier Forgiveness at her left hip. It is a perfectly balanced blade forged of platinum and diamond dust, also simple in design but engraved with the signs of the 9 celestial orders.

When I first came to RhyDin, I had only throwing daggers and so chose not to duel with the rather small blades.
My first sword was a rapier given to me by my dear friends, AJay and Sher Bird, as a wedding gift when I married Daemon Satyriasis. The blade was a simple, yet perfectly balanced weapon. Crafted of stainless steel with a gilded stainless hilt it had the date of the occassion engraved at the base of the blade. I named it "Bliss", as a play on the phrase "Wedded Bliss". After Daemon left the name changed to "Vigilance" as I waited for his
return. He did return, and we were divorced. That blade is no longer the one I use to duel, although it is truly a superb weapon. The blade I currently carry was also a wedding gift, but one from my marriage to Zachary Wûlfgar. Jon Brightblade made the blade, crafting it with all the care and love of a deep friendship. In honour of that friendship, I named the blade "Fidelity". It, too, is a simple blade of perfectly balanced stainless steel.
The hilt is fashioned in the form of a leaping tigress, with a small basket to protect my hand from slashes and such. The tigress looks to be in perfect and calm repose, as if completely in control of her world and all she surveys. She has small glittering emeralds inset as eyes. I love both my blades, for their sentimental value, as well as their craftsmanship. As well, though I no longer use "Viligance" to duel, I would never part with it.

My blades...Well, I've only wielded two blades in my entire lifetime.

The first was the ancestral broadsword I stole from my father the night I left for RhyDin Towne when I was 18, when I heard him say that he would force me into marriage to a man I despised for the riches he would gain. It was a relatively simple broadsword with a rosewood grip and brass crosspiece.

The story of my current weapon is a rather difficult one to explain by myself, so I hope some of the others that recieved a weapon in this manner could help me explain. About a year or two ago, someone had created seven weapons design to be wielded by whomever the weapons called. We were to be known as RhyDin's Guardians, since the creator of the weapons had percieved a danger that was soon to come to RhyDin. The seven weapons (correct me if I make a
mistake here) were called Vengence (not Dalamar's sword), Peacekeeper, Truth, Honor, Love, Fidelity and Courage. The sword that called to me was Courage, which is a mithril-bladed longsword with a platinum crosspiece, wire-wrapped grip and pommel. Along the first third of the lenght of the blade is etched with the name of the sword in runes. It's magical properties an indeterminant, and frankly I don't think I'd care to find out.

Addendum..

I have just recently been reminded that there were 8 weapons, not just 7.

I apologize to the holder of the weapon named Respect for forgetting them.

On the subject:

One can hone their skills with any weapon, and some with many, and some prefer one above any other. A well tailored suit. Your wedding dress. You would cringe to see it in the hands of another even though you know it would not serve their hand as well as your own.

I weild the blade "Golindal", sharp as sunlight on a violet sea. Golindal was given to me by he whom you know as Valmion....before many of you were yet born. (or technically, March 1994) I was as green as grass in the dueling rings, but proudly raised my "humble unnamed blade" to the furious onslaught of other up and coming duelists, like myself.......many of these opponent's names now only seen in the History, their standards on the Wall,
or...thier headstone in the graveyard. I think that Valmion took pity on my budget blade, knicked and battered, flaked with rust. Where he found-bought-or-stole Golindal I never did ask..... but the treasured blade has served me well over time. I am proud to be weilding, once more this mithril piece of art.

However, though Golindal will always be my blade of choice, the weapon that served me for more historic purposes would be "The Sword of Vile Remorse". A more suiting sword to parallel my darker years. Remorse won me the 9th Barony which I occupied for one year. Remorse is the cold steel razor that aided me in taking the life of the Fair Prudence in the Deathmatch for the Preservation of the Ward of Gondar. Remember the Ward,
if not those who died for it....and those who damn near died for it. Let me add also that if you attended and/or remember that event, you're definitely part of the Old School.... or, the New Old School. However you prefer to see it.

Right then, I am pleased to see this Archive in existance and have enjoyed reading it's pages. Its nice to have some easy reading here for a change, indeed, it would be difficult to bicker over blades, eh? Swords have faces not unlike those who swing them around and sometimes have a greater tale to tell.

I duel with twin mithril scimitars, Lathe and Toecleaver. Lathe is a scimitar I acquired in my youth, and Toecleaver has always proved most effective against giants and their kin. Both are curved blades quite suitable for slashing recalcitrant young duelers. ::snickers::
