Challenge to the Sixth Baronial Ring
From: simini@aol.com (Simini)
Date: 03 Jul 1999 22:13:20 EDT
To the Community, Overlord, Baron's Council and Staff of the Duel of Swords,
I have issued Challenge to Mr. Drey Starke for the title of Baron of the Sixth Ring. My peer wins have been validated by the Keeper of the Standings, and I am awaiting Mr. Starke's response to set a time and place for the match.
For years, I have stated that I have no desire for titles, and some that know me may be surprised by this Challenge. Then again, maybe not. Times have changed, and I feel there is now something that I can contribute to this sport with this course of action. Additionally, I am now fully prepared to make the personal sacrifice required of those of title.
I apologize for the immediacy of this Challenge... in general, I like to see a new Baron have some time to enjoy the title before having it threatened. However, my reasons for Challenging require quick action.
What are my reasons? Since Mr. Starke entered the duels earlier this year, I have observed him in many public and personal interactions, and I find his motivations too often to be of a nature I believe is detrimental to this sport. The thought of someone with these motivations holding a position of influence moves me to Challenge, and Challenge quickly.
For those that may want specifics, you will not find them here. I offer an honorable Challenge, and will not slander Mr. Starke by enumerating the instances in which I found his conduct offensive.
I would like to add a note of what this Challenge is NOT about. It has nothing to do with "avenging" Lupton's loss of the Sixth to Mr. Starke. That Challenge was a fairly-issued and fairly-fought match between two skilled duelists, and Lupton lost. There is nothing to avenge. If vengeance were wanted, Lupton is quite capable of gaining it himself. Nae, this has everything to do with Mr. Starke himself, and the threat that I perceive he poses to the
sport. Had Mr. Starke followed through on his Challenge to the Baron Lucian and won, I was prepared to take the same action I am taking now.
I do not question Mr. Starke's ability as a duelist; in fact, I view him as a formidable opponent, and hope that I can provide him a worthy Challenge.
Respectfully,
Simini

...and my hair's a natural glitzy platinum. Think if I said it with enough sincerity, I could get them to believe that too?

Good luck you two. It will be an interesting match of skills. I know that whoever wins, the ring is worn by someone I respect.

::Bouncing guilded lashes at him in a familiar pattern:: Why Darlin' I never knew you could be embarrassed. Nothing personal. here... it's just one more redhead among the 70 percent majority of redheads in town. I just have issues with having poppycock served up under the guise of an entrée...you know, kind of like you're ..ehhh...shoesize. ::Maybe he
can be embarrassed::
I'd give you a chance to handle my sincerity, but BODYGOD's expecting me. He's putting a sealing coat over my flawless RhyDin thighs after a touch up re-sculpturing to the latest perfect daily dimensions. Wanna come? He has
Nyyyy-mmmmphs.

"Nyyyy-mmmmphs." The word flashed at him like a beckoning neon sign.
"God-myself", he thought, "she shore does know how to keep me happy!"
He scritched under his arm, that was the secret hand motion to send gods transportin' to wherever they wanted to be, donjaknow, and appeared just in time.

Drey and Simini,
I am sure this will be an excellent match. I know you are both skilled competitors and that you will both be doing your best and utmost. I will applaud the winner, whomever it is.
However, I have to root for Drey. Come out of the ring with the ring on your finger, my friend.

The ever-shocking response:
Simi, kick his tail from here to next week. You know I'll be in your corner making myself hoarse.

Simini moved slowly toward the bureau, her eyes fixed upon the metallic ball. She'd had the mithril for years, ever since she'd forged Melagarian for Aspendale, but she'd never known what use the leftover material would ever have for her. Suddenly, it was obvious, and she could think of no better way to remember him.
She reached for the ball, looking at it closely. The silvery metal held a deep reddish tinge; it had been infused with her own blood, giving the material its unique color and the sword its name. Her left hand still held a faint scar, a physical reminder of the long, desperate night she spent making the blade for her Swordbrother who lie so ill upon her bed. It was worth it, though - Tor had recovered, and used the blade to glory.
After several thoughtful minutes, she turned and left the room, ready to work.
Later, when she returned to her bedroom, she placed a small black leather pouch upon the spot the ball had been, then sat down to write a letter.
