The Soul Search Of The New Overlord
From: agrenish@aol.com (Agrenish)
Date: 12 Jul 1999 07:20:20 EDT
I'm writing something that to most of you is serious, to me is just the truth coming out.
I took the time to think about this in depth because of what I witnessed in the annex during Magnus's defense. People think I'm an ((ends in 'hole')). I am. You want to know why? Because I say what I think and I don't put on pretty masks and wield illusions to hide it.
Truth, what a crooked, hazy and misty line does it draw once you have seen what people really think about truth. Everyone always tells you from the moment you are old enough to comprehend the word to the moment you die to be truthful. This is because whenever they want to have a strait answer, they cannot get one, because everyone naturally lies to make peace with everyone else. But what happens when you really are truthful, at all times of the day?
Suddenly, it is a sin, just as lying is. When someone asks you how you are, do you say, fine? Or do you say, 'I'm pretty upset right now, damnit'? But lets go beyond extremes, let's say that you're feeling kinda angry at the world because you've just had a mild argument that you lost, and someone comes up to you and says 'hey', do you say 'hey' back to them with half a heart? Or do you snap back at them?
Releasing the emotion behind the words plays as much of a part of truth as saying the words. So when someone comes up to me, and I'm in an bad mood and they ask me how I am, I'm pissed off right now, how are you doing? If they didn't want your opinion, they should have never asked for it in the first place. I have more respect for grouchy old ladies who hate everyone then wrinkled political plums who say things, just to be nice.
What really pisses me off about all this nonsense is that it is morally correct to tell the truth, yet no one does it. In all honesty, all sensitivity gets you is more friends. It will never further the awareness of one's self, personal likes and dislikes and the 'whys' behind it, all they are, are 'fines', 'goods' and 'that looks nice'. If you get a bad haircut, and damn does it look ugly, I'm going to say damn, that looks ugly, if that's what I
think.
Everyone states the truth with the things that 'matter most', the most important things, someone's death, a serious injury, a war… crap like that. But what really separates one person from the next are the little things that show us who we are. I like long hair for both guys and girls. I like girls in dresses who cook. I like ties that are shaped round at the bottom and looks like a big tongue. I hate everything that looks exactly like everything
else. It's stupid and ridicules.
If everyone said exactly what they thought, then we would know who's really a happy person and who's struggling with their identity and who the nasty people are. But since everyone wants to be perceived as the honorable loved-by-all crooked meat slapper, as I know you are, then it's makes it very difficult to tell you who you are. I know who the hell I am, and all of you know who I am. That's one most of you all do not have.
Take your choice boys and girls of the DoS, you can have either the next bright winged, blacked eyes honor-bound lovable, or you can have someone as truthful as a blister. I don't give two damns about the alignment of the Barons, but you all should know at least what you really want.
And that's my only pledge and promise; To be honest, in all circumstances… that is what I want, otherwise, I'll turn I'll turn into one of you, and I do not want that.
And so you know, I'm going to read your responces, but if it turns into something that is trying to persuade me into turning into using a snot nosed, 'beating around the bush' method, then you've already failed to comprehend me... and it'll be ignored, or mocked... which would be more fun anywho.
((BTW, sorry for my little mistake with the other post.))

She has to yawn with this one. Of course she is here to be a brat. But, Hey, that's her job in this universe. That and seek power.
"My dear overlord, the truth can be the most pwerful weapon known to man. HOWEVER, do you have the wisdom to use it effectively, or are you going to squander it in being an annoyance to those around here?"
Her lips part with a soft chuckle. "Who am I, you ask? A concerned citizen of this weird land that is about to show what you what the truth is. I am perhaps hated around most of Rhydin, and you know What I don't care. See you in the rings"

Aggy,
Right on, mon. I am similiar in many ways. Alot of people don't like what I have to say, but what I say because I care and it's the truth. I am bluntly honest to a fault, but I don't believe in lieing to people if only to be tactful. If a woman asks me how she looks in a dress, I'll tell her if she's hot or if she looks like a blimp. Same thing here, I might not get alot of people liking me, but at least you know where I stand.

Yeah... now thats a statement... There is only one thing wrong with being completely honest all the time, Say you were and Ambassador and your talking with the Queen of some far away land, She has this absolutely stupid hair job and a dress that makes her look like "Kool Aid" Man... Do you tell her that she looks this way or do you make a half truth and
say she looks interesting.
All I'm saying is that using half truths can be just as good as a bald lie, but it is what you think to a point. I'm not saying that I do this, I am honest some of the time, but when it comes to how I perceive other people or greet them I will be nice and lie if I must. I think a healthy mix of bald honesty, bald lies and half- truths would be the best way to get along in life.

Overlord,
I shall make this succinct.
I agree with much of what you wrote whole-heartedly. One should not mind how others will feel when stating an obvious truth. However, I would find it hard to believe that every single thrashing insult I have heard from your mouth or seen from your pen is merely the truth, and not intentionally a means to hurt other's feelings. If you think that the truths that you make up concerning issues & other people, aka "your opinions", are of the same
nature, and should be held in as high of regard as plain facts, you are sadly mistaken. You have the right to make the insult, but in return, the people certainly have a right to find that action contemptable.

Walk,
What you failed to pick up on was one of the lines... the emotion behind the words make up truth as much as the words themselves.
What is a flung insult? Retalliation. And that's just one example.
What's a flung insult without cause? Fun.
You express feelings through actions and speach, and if you comprimise any of these, for any reason, you're being untrue to yourself.
Now, in your little case that you've presented to me, most of the time, I did such because I felt the need and want to get myself into a verbal battle in which I knew I could always come up with something more deviously cleaver than someone else.
Make your argument all you want that what I do is unessisary... you'll fail because if I feel it needed to be done, then it should be done. It ain't no differant than challenging for a Ring or participating in the Warlords Tournament. You did those because you wanted to, not because it was nessisary.
I hope this helps you comprehend more clearly.

There's a difference between being honest and being respectful, Agrenish. You're honest, that's good, but you don't respect those around you. You are under some false pretense that you are better than everybody else.
There are people in the world who deserve kindness. How well they handle themselves in the ring shouldn't determine this.
As you already know, I've stated my renegade alignment to you, Drake, and Golden. I don't like you as a person, and that's what it boils down to.
There's the honesty you wanted. Now give the community what they deserve: a good overlord.

Totally true. Aggy you don't have much respect it seems like. And no one is that disrespectful all the time. I haven't heard one respectful thing from you stated about another person. You can't always be angry, someone could be very nice to you and you could like that person, but just to piss of that person you'll make fun of them. Thats not called be truthful, its called being obnoxious. Learn the difference.

Agrenish,
Yer not a leader, yer not an example ta be followed, yer stimply a title. Ya don't help new duelers, ya mock 'em. Ya don't look ta make friends, simply fer targets of yer jokes. I'm not sure why exactly ya challenged fer Overlord, a good guess would be simply a title and a name in da record books.
In any event, yer an Overlord, yer a title, someday someone will beat ya and no one will care ya lost. Somethin' great about being Overlord or Baron is da chance at being respected, simply because of yer title and position. But when yer such a jerk, all of da honor due ta one with skill gets flushed; its a darn shame and waste of space when a person like dat exists.
Da record books may have yer name, but duelers will someday forget ya, ta be truely remembered is ta have friends and family who never forget ya no matter what rank ya hold.
We are but a gathering of travellers in an inn's basement, jerks and losers pass into halls like gusts of wind and are gone just as fast, if its a memory yer shootin' fer yer methods are a bit twisted.
Yer Overlord, yer a title, nothin' more.

It's strange really...
I can recall many times where Aggy would thank the callers of his duels, when often the more "honorable" opponent would fail to do so... more intent on hurrying on to the next duel.
I can recall a few times where Aggy would say what he meant, and it was pleasant.
I can recall a few times when Aggy made comment on other people, saying how good they were, or how well they did.
As for myself... often, rather than stating an unpleasant truth, I will say nothing at all. I do not knowingly tell falsehoods, for lying only begets further lying. If I am mistaken and proven wrong, I will admit to it.
Agrenish's form of honesty is brutal most of the time... but is it any more brutal than the honesty employed by some of the others who act in a similar fashion, yet are lauded as icons?
I really can't call Agrenish a good friend... our personalities clash too much... his humor is too dark for my tastes...
But, I can say that I respect him for being a person who stands by his ideals.
I can say that he is a person that, when he isn't in one of his bad moods, is someone I actually like spending time around.

Now isn't this odd......numerous people are just making presumptions. I, for one, treat Aggy with respect and get it in return. He has been nothing but polite and friendly to me. Can any of you honestly call him bad and 'evil'? If so, I ask you...is a man truly evil and bad if he tried numerous things to free a well known slave here? Hmmmm?
I, personally, find hid bluntness and truthfulness refreshing. He tells it like it is. There are others here who mask it and cover it up.

I think Aggy as Overlord is just what this place needs. I have alot of respect for Aggy because he is honest and in your face, rather then the majority of backstabbing fickle conspirators who have to plot against others around here. Including from the Senior Baron through the majority of the Council, I've seen Aggy do more for other duelers then I've seen in a long time.
No he doesn't blow sunshine up your arse, or make your ego feel good, because it's not his style. Aggy is Overlord, Supreme Dueler of the Sport, because he beat the former Overlord in a contest of skill.
Swords is about the contest of skill, what you can do with your blade, nothing else matters. I don't care if someone is a leader or not. I'd rather Aggy as Overlord or Baron then worthless duelers like SilentCris and Jaycynda who can't even maintain a Warlord ranking of skill. When it comes down to it, you earn your way in the rings based on skill, not because people like you or not.
If I was Aggy I wouldn't want the respect of a bunch of fools who want Mary Poppins to be their Overlord rather then someone who knows how to use their blade.
