The Warlord Reputation

I don't ever remember it to be seen this poorly by those lower in the ranks. Now I've faced several persons of the lower ranks since returning to the arenas and every single one I faced (those that didn't know me before hand) seemed to be very standoffish when it came down to asking for a duel. As if they expected me to turn them down for a peer or someone of proven skill. Which is just plain odd considering the vast
majority of non-Warlord/Barons have always seemed rather gung-ho in proving themselves in a match against one of the arena's supposed elite. I doubt it's the people themselves, because I've talked to many of them after the initial first impression wore off and I must say they seem the same determined lot as their predecessors.
Anyway, I don't bring up this to point out some life threatening problem that the duels have or for anything along the lines of pointing fingers at peoples or even to imply that we should make some drastic oath to ourselves to be better people. I just want to know:
What have we, the Warlords and Barons, done to get this reputation?
This is more a question to the Warlords than it is to non-Warlords, but anyone feel free to answer. I'm extremely curious as to why my first impressions seem to suffer so merely because I'm a Warlord looking for a duel.
Thankee for the cork space.
Open to test all,
Roland

Well, for one thing Roland, many of these Warlords seem to only ask for peer fights, and many turn down any ranks lower than warlord who ask for a match. Why is that you say? Well, they only care about rank. They want peer wins so they can challenge for a ring. That's all they care about. Seems like many can only have fun when they advance in rank. Well, that's my two cents.

I primarily duel Warlords, but it has nothing to do with rank or peer wins.

Here's me, which is most likely different from most:
- I duel whoever asks me to duel them first. If I do turn someone down, it's because I don't like them personally; it has nothing to do with rank.
- I generally wait for people to ask me to duel. People usually ask. I'd rather wait twenty minutes to get an answer from someone who wants to duel instead of asking the first commoner who comes in, who happens to be reluctant to duel me. Of course, a dueler could always say, "I'd rather duel one of my own rank," which I'd understand. However, when you don't know many people very well, you may worry of offending them, and I simply don't want to
put people in that position unnecessarily.
- When I'm a warlord, and wanting to challenge for the tenth ring again, I'll admit that I am eager to challenge peers. Sometimes people will say, "I may not be a peer, but I'll duel you." In that case, I'd happily accept.
I've always been eager to hold the title of baron, so I'll admit that I've always gone peer win hunting. However, when anyone shows an interest to duel, then it pleases me equally, Commoner to Overlord, to do what I came here to do; duel.

I fight only Warlords and above.
I have not kept record of any of my peer wins for over a year.
I fight Warlords+ because more times than not, the commoner who is asking you for a duel is not a commoner. Even though you treat him like a commoner and duel him like a commoner, he may not be one. And I duel commoners differently than I duel warlords.
This way, by only dueling Warlords+, I eliminate the problem.

I think the lower ranks exaggerate the Warlords. Meaning, they always think we look for peers. Look at me, ever since my last challenge I've got two peer wins. I don't really care who duels me as long as their mental stability is under control.
Talking about peers, anyone that asks, I'll gladly take the duel request. We are not only the problem. I've seen many Warlords now that when commoner, only asked to face commoner. I won't name them, since it doesn't really bother me. It makes perfect sense. Whatever rank I was, I dueled whomever, and I only looked for a good, strong duel. I remember dueling Adonai Uziel as a Swordsman. I really enjoyed that duel (Not to mention I won), but thing
was, he really treated me well. He told me I'd make warlord easy and that my abilities were beyond that.
What I'm saying is, it's usually the commoner that is reluctant since the opponent may have the veteran advantages ((A.k.a fancies.)). Like Skyler, those are the warlords I feel always have to prove themselves in which they only look for peers. Don't ask me, just a thought.
I don't care what rank it is, I'll duel them.

Lately I have dueled mostly just Warlords and Barons, but that was because I was on a bad losing streak and dueling slump. My last 30 straight duels have been against "peers" simply for the fact I wanted to train myself against the skill my peers are supposed to have due to their earned rank. However, anyone who asks me to duel regardless of
rank, and they are the first to ask, I will usually grant a duel too. I just didn't want to end my bad streak beating a Swordsmen, or have what wins I have been getting lately being attributed to lesser ranks.

Well...... I'm certainly no Warlord, but I think that I can render a relatively informed opinion on this.
While I duel Var and others of higher rank fairly regularly... I have no fear of losing to someone more skilled than I. Hopefully I shall learn something in the process..... I can say that many of lower ranks are afraid to duel someone of higher proven skills. There is the fear that they simply won't stand a chance in the Abyss against the advanced skill of their opponent, and so don't ask the Warlord for the duel, or decline the duel if asked.
I have seen this on numerous occassions, where a lower rank will decline once the rank of the Warlord is known.
There is another factor in why it seems that Warlords have trouble with getting duels in the lower ranks. That is the "Peer Win" fever that strikes some. Granted, not all.... and if truth were to be known probably verra few.... Warlords refuse to duel any other than their Peers. But there are enough that are loud enough during dueling hours that hide the others rather effecively. A commoner that is as of yet unfamiliar with the personages
of the Arena seeing one or two Warlords asking for Peer Wins and declining duels with those of lower ranks would give the impression that's what Warlords are interested in. It doesn't matter that most are not that way... That is the impression given, and unfortunately, first impressions seem to stick harder and longer.

Well now, once more I will give my enlightened opinion on this subject as well. ::chuckles as he pens the note to the cork::
In the "Old School" days of dueling, when Xenograg was the 6th Overlord, the act of a Warlord asking a lower rank to duel, or accepting a general offer to the room of a lower rank to duel, was considered bad etiquette. The only time it was considered honorable for a Warlord to accept a duel from a lower rank was when the lower ranked specifically asked the Warlord to duel. I have always tried to maintain this code in my dueling.
Cheers,

Exactly Valmion. Lower ranks should ask the higher ranks if they want to duel, and most higher ranks should oblige the lower rank with a duel. The lower rank should send in the duel request as well, or whoever asks for the duel should send in the duel request.

I alternate in rank between Grand Mistress and Warlady. I can tell ye that when I first came to the arena as a new patron, I asked many warlords for a duel. The majority of them 'ave honored my request. Nae did I want to avoid any who had the same rank as I in the lower brackets, and certainly I dueled them too, but I found there was so much that I learned from the warlords. Once I became a warlord meself, many of
the lower ranks would ask ifn I was interested in a duel and furthermore wanted to know what rank I was. When I would tell them, 'warlady', many responded wit' , "nevermind."
So, Aye.....I find that in getting turned down most of the time in search of just a good duel, tis easier to just let those of lower ranks request the duel from me. Frankly, I do nae want to waste me time or theirs.
I 'ave to second Valmion and E's statements.
I knew of a lady once who told me that she could nae duel me unless she was the same rank as I, and she commented further to to tell me that her instructor would nae allow it. She ranked as a Grand Mistress at the time. I was further surprised to see her jump in the ring so readily wit' a commoner, right afta her request and askin' me rank, then givin' me the 'ne'ermind' polite brush off.

From 'nother viewpoint....
I m'self have been leery of duelin' ye Peers as of late, for somethin' that happenend t' me when I had first returned.
I sent out th' call for a duel, in that call, givin' my rank 'f Commoner out t' the world... was answered by He That Shall Remain Nameless... I didna ask rank, as I feel its a bit rude, on m' own part anyway. HE calls it in, nad we step in th' ring.
I get pounded. Whomped. With Fancies. I think I found out th' hard way that this Guy was a Grandmaster. Then I heard him say tha' when duelin' with commoners an' othets of lower rank, he nae uses fancies. Whatta farce.
I know tha' most of th' esteemed Peers don't do thinks like tha', but once bitten, twice shy, ye be knowin'.

Here's my thoughts on the subject:
When I was a Commoner-Grand Master, I dueled anyone. Actually, I had more fun dueling Warlords and Barons because I seemed to have a greater success rate with them. (BTW, aggressiveness always wins over strategy, most commoners are aggressive, we are strategic..so it doesn't work.) Anyway, when I became a Warlord, I dueled a few peers, then suddenly, Commoners didn't want to duel me anymore..cause they claimed they "would be fancied out of the ring."
Even after I said I would not use fancies..they still shrugged me off. Now for that sole reason, I usually asked to duel higher ranks when asking..but if a lower rank approaches me and asked for a duel..(such as Fyn and Damien did last night) I will gladly oblige them. I agree with Valmion and Elijah, as well. I think most commoners are spiteful of us because of some others actions, or afraid to duel us..that's why I do not seek out a commoner to
duel, unless they ask me for a duel.

Of course times have changed. Being a Warlord now might be misjudged an award of longevity rather than skill. However, let no Warlord forget their position as "role model" to the lower ranks. Did it take you 6 months or 6 days to earn the rank, ultimately no one really cares. What matters is how to keep the title of Warlord from disdain in general. I might have had some suggestions for this once upon a time. For now,
I can only hold myself accountable to my own standards of honor and hope that all Warlords are not judged in unison, but rather, by their own merit.
On Valmion and E's mention of dueling etiquette regarding inter-ranked duels, that was a taboo I learned a little late in my career. It took me years to drop the nickname "Commoner Slayer". To this day I still duel anyone/everyone regardless of rank but now at least I try to maintain a balance. My WoL of 70(+ -) is truthfully, cushioned on the backs of Commoners. As I matured in the rings I was able to wean myself off easy prey and I would
advise no one to question my mastery of the game at this point. You may find this to be a common Warlord attitude.

When I was ranked GM and below I preferred to duel Warlords and Barons. In fact, I would often specifically ask if there were any Warlords interested in dueling someone of lower rank. I suppose I still tend to duel more Peers than lower ranked duelists now, but this is because a large percentage (60-75% at least, maybe more) of my duels were with Warlords
or higher even before I made WL.
If asked to duel by lower ranked types, I generally accept. Especially if it is a good friend. Likewise I will occasionally ask lower ranked friends to duel.
