thirteenth ring

Dear patrons of the swords,
First I would like to congratulate Magnus on a well fought, and well deserved victory. I wish him to reign long and well as Overlord. Though the reason I write is to inform all that I have retired the thirteenth barons' ring. I do this as I do not feel I earned the ring. As I have always spoken, I care little for titles and ranks, I simply wish to enjoy this place and improve it to the best of my abilities. Perhaps if it was really meant for my
finger, I could win it back in the up and coming warlord's tourney. Perhaps in the future I will attain another chance, otherwise, it was fun while it lasted. I wish the best of luck to you all, and again, congrats Magnus.

Easy come,
Easy go.
Has the Overlordship lost all prestige?
I think so.

It's funny. When Dalamar was Overlord, people complained that he was ruining the sport with his long tenure. Now, people complain because Overlords are unable to hang on to their titles for extended periods.

You're right, Mr(s). Nameless One... It would be a lot more productive if we complained about people who don't even back up their own words with a simple signature. Least we know how important this thought is.
Personally, I don't mind going through various overlords, the thing that bothers me is when a friend loses the title.

She pauses at the cork, a smile tilting at her lips as she reads Gunthar's missive, "Tis nae oft th' such ist placed 'pon th' cork."

Gunthar,

Thou mayest nae longer 'old th' mantle nor th' Thirteenth Ring, yet thou hast shown 'onor unta th' traditions, th' duels, thine peers, ast well ast unta Magnus. Know thee th', Gunthar, tis manna wh' 'old th' rank 'o warlord couldst do worse th' t' follow thine example. May thee find th' Fates aire kind ta thee. May skill rest in thine sword arm shouldst thee again seek title.

I could sing that to the tune of "Bohemian Rhapsody"... except I shouldn't, because nothing really matters, anyone can see...

This is a statement that very openly speaks of the ignorance of the person making it. For those of us who have seen Overlords other than Dalamar, I have to say that the Overlordship has not lost any of its prestige at all. In fact, I have to say that I am glad to see that no one is holding onto it too long. It keeps the competition brewing and it keeps people's ambitions sharp.
To put it simply, this is the usual state of the Overlordship. Reigns like Dalamar's are the exception, not the rule. They tend to say something (often several things) about the indvidual who holds the title for so long. Learn what you are talking about before you speak with authority.
Hopefully Magnus will hold onto the ring long enough to leave his mark but not too long to stifle the atmosphere.

That would be me, Percy. You may address me directly.

So I'm ignorant? No, ignorant would mean shutting your eyes to the obvious degeneration of the value of this sport and its titles. Overlord no longer means "Supreme Dueler" but "Lucky Dueler of the Month," just another name on the evergrowing list whose prominence depreciates with each new, quick-followed addition. The competition has and will always be there, but at this point it's dwindled down to a group of detached sword jocks who feel the
need to show their stuff, having their taste before moving on. Kudos to the core of duelers who continue to stick it out and hold on to some integrity of title within these halls. They prove much stronger than I.

We can hope Magnus will bring a little something back to the Overlordship, but that doesn't mean a damn thing until he proves it. History does have its tendency to repeat.

For me....

Alot of the titles have lost their luster and value, simply because of the quanity of them and the quanity of holders per title these days. We're coming up close on to 40 Overlords in the history of the sport, when I remember the 1st Overlord. Some Baron rings have been held by 10 different people or more over the last few years, with me having my own hand full of them as well. The mystic is gone for me personally, now it's just fluff to my
career to add titles. The only thing I care about is my dueling reputation of skill, which I admit has been lousy of late. This Warlord's Tourney all I care about is the pride of besting my peers, the prizes are a bonus I'll sort out when I do claim one.

Deluthan... you say "Kudos to the core of duelers who continue to stick it out and hold on to some integrity of title within these halls. They prove much stronger than I."
If you do not intend to hold some level of integrity yourself, should you win the 2nd... then you should not have even challenged for it in the first place.
Unless, of course, that was your intent all along.

If that is the case, I dearly hope that AJay slices you to ribbons.

And your flat assumption means what to me, Drake?

You know, I may not get along or, hell, have trouble liking the majority of the people here, but don't dare tell me that I don't carry the best interests of the community with my actions.

Should I earn the right to wear the Second, expect a public missive in which I'll attempt to better describe my intentions in challenging. Should I lose tomorrow night, I seriously doubt anyone will care what they were. I'll leave it at that, and let the duel itself answer what questions remain.
