Matt had made his way into the basement annex on a whim, never having expected to find anyone there. But, expectations thwarted, he adhered to a request that he officiate an important match between Cletus Ganderfald, challenger, and Karen Wilder, Baroness. With no scoreboard or loudspeaker system, he relied on memory and voice alone as the best two-of-three series progressed. Days later, at his first spare moment,
he composed a letter to the DoS community that announced the results of the match.

Re: Fourth Baronial Ring Challenge Match
On October 3, 2000 by one of the many standard calendars of the realm, Cletus Ganderfald did meet Karen Wilder for the right to possess the 4'th Baron's Ring. The 4'th ring has a long history, having been held by such (in)famous people as Morgan le Fay du Cornwall, Jesse Troyan, Huma Dragonbane, and Dalamar ArD'aumon; it now rested on the finger of Karen Wilder who, I believe, is only the third woman to possess it.
The Baroness chose the best of three format for the match, and the first began quickly. Cletus took an early lead in the first round but gave it up to Karen in the second. Cletus' problem? She never gave it back and went on to dominate in an eventual 5-3.5 victory. The duel was error prone, as both duelists dropped low and directly into the path of their opponent's slashing sword and neither could get into a defensive rhythm (Cletus utilized the
only successful defensive posture in the match).
Match two was more equalized; Cletus started with the lead again but it took him 3 additional rounds to relinquish it to Karen instead of only one round as he'd done in the first match. But, rather than allow Karen to run away with the points, Cletus turned the match into a seesaw battle. Both fighters mirrored each other's attempts nine times, causing the match to go into extra rounds. Karen held the match in her hand at the end of the 15'th
round, but she couldn't finish it. Neither, though, could Cletus take advantage of her mistakes and thereby allowed the Baroness to bide her time and finish the match in the 20'th round, parrying away his final assault.
As such, Karen Wilder continues her reign as Baroness of the Fourth Ring. Congratulations to her on a successful defense.
