Challenge For the Thirteenth
From: leducblanc@aol.com (LeDucBlanc)
Date: 11 Jul 2001 23:56:26 EDT
Baron Rynth and the Community,
As the officials have received no notification of the Baron Rynth's resignation and are thus, despite the testimony of Charlie Jericho, powerless, as the Baron himself has done nothing to clear up the uncertainty so created and indeed seems to be missing, and as the Overlord has claime dit is 'none of his affair', I am doing something about it. I hereby issue challenge to Baron Evan Rynth of the Thirteenth! I hope this resolves the matter to the
satisfaction that the community deserves.

Refrain from putting words in my mouth, Percival. I never claimed it 'none of my affair'. I stated I would wait until I heard from Evan before I formed an opinion.

When someone tells me that they have 'no opinion' on a matter, then I assume they are claiming it is none of their affair. If you had truly felt it your affair, I am sure you would have an opinion on the matter. Before you confess the term 'no opinion', let me remind you that those were your exact words on the subject.

"When someone tells me that they have 'no opinion' on a matter, then I assume they are claiming it is none of their affair. If you had truly felt it your affair, I am sure you would have an opinion on the matter."
Your Grace;
Refraining from forming an opinion on a matter until one has all the facts one deems necessary in order to form a reasonable opinion is a far cry from feeling a matter is none of their affair.
I realize that in this community, forming an opinion without any facts at all is gallingly common. Perhaps rather than being obtuse, argumentative, and demanding, you might applaud the fact that the Overlord is actually exercising judgment and restraint?
Or, perhaps you simply wish to engage in the time-tested tactic of poking wild beasts with sharp sticks until they've finally had enough.
Lord Ganderfald;
I, for one, appreciate your refusal to be forced into taking a position without all the information you require. It is a noble trait, and one I am happy to support.
Regards,
Ian Rex.

Your Majesty,
Actually, to the best of my knowledge, I have been the only individual int he community actively attempting to discover the facts of the situation. Others have been content to simply do as they will, as is all too often the case here of late. I have attempted to get information on the matter from Evan himself, but the Baron appears to have absented himself from the realm. I have gotten details of the events that occurred from the eyewitnesses, and I
have received (as has the public) the exact events that occurred from the caller of the duel which began the uncertainty.
'All the facts' are as follows:
1.) The Baron Evan Rynth accepted a wager from the then Baron Ramsus Tidewater. They would duel, the loser would retire his ring.
2.) The Baron Rynth lost said duel, as testified by both Seamus MacDonnaugh and the caller of the duel, Charlie Jericho.
3.) The Baron Rynth discarded the ring, but never made any official resignation of said ring. I researched this matter carefully, asking both the standings keeper and the, to all purposes, unofficial supervisor of the sport about the ring's status and whether or not the Baron Rynth had retired or resigned it officially.
4.) With this knowledge in my possession, I made a public post outlining these events and requested that both the Baron Rynth and the Overlord comment. The Baron Rynth appears to have disappeared from the realm, as previously commented, and has failed to reply. The Overlord, despite the public status of many of these facts and the fact that those facts not publicly known were made known in a public post by Mrs. Jericho, claimed to have no opinion.
The facts were available, many had been made public. Those that had not been made public have been available to the Overlord by asking the officials of the sport at any time. He has, apparently, chosen not to do so. He still claims to have no opinion. Therefore, I believe I am fully correct into calling into question his level of concern over the integrity of a key Loyal Baron, indeed, the man who assisted him in winning his present title.
I can understand if he chooses to support the man regardless of his conduct. I can understand if he chooses to hold the man's conduct against him. I do not understand his lack of concern, and I think it points out the qualities of apathy becoming increasingly common in this community. If he truly does not have the facts in question by now, then this itself is something that might point to this same apathy. As Overlord he, above the rest of us,
should make it his business to discover the facts. I have done so myself, anyone else can do it as easily.
As a final note, your Majesty, I would point out that your own possession of the facts in question probably less than the Overlord's and is obviously less than my own. I would therefore recommend that you follow your own advice, and look into the matter in question before inserting yourself into the discussion. While I respect your acuity and your judgement, I do not believe that you are standing on the firmest ground to accuse others of making
judgements without facts.

Percy,
With all due respect, give it a rest. It's not the Overlord's job to police the Baronies, keep track of the rings, or follow up with what Baron is doing what. The officials are the ones who need to address and handle the situation. Yeah, Evan and Cletus are friends and both hold titles, but that suddenly does not make one responsible for the other. I agree with Ian on this matter. Let it go and quit hassleing Cletus about Evan, there is
nothing he can do, nor should he really have to do.

"The facts were available, many had been made public. Those that had not been made public have been available to the Overlord by asking the officials of the sport at any time. He has, apparently, chosen not to do so."
Your Grace;
Even I, tyrannical despot that I am, afford an accused man the opportunity to respond before passing judgment upon him when he is brought before me.
"As a final note, your Majesty, I would point out that your own possession of the facts in question probably less than the Overlord's and is obviously less than my own. I would therefore recommend that you follow your own advice, and look into the matter in question before inserting yourself into the discussion."
Allow me to understand your hypocricy, Your Grace. You insist that the Overlord, who is in possession of the same public knowledge as I, must have an opinion on this matter; yet you suggest that I, being in possession of the same public knowledge as the Overlord, shouldn't even be discussing the issue, despite not having expressed an opinion one way or the other?
You note that you're the only person who seems to care, yet you attempt to insult me by suggesting I should keep silent?
"While I respect your acuity and your judgement, I do not believe that you are standing on the firmest ground to accuse others of making judgements without facts."
I understand that it's difficult to think en Français while reading and writing an Anglais, Your Grace. However, at no time did I pass judgment on anyone for making judgments themselves. I am defending the Overlord against charges of refusing to pass judgment without facts.
Surely you see the diffference.

Ian Rex.

Lord Uhr;
We are not entirely in agreement on the matter. I do believe that, once the Overlord has had an opportunity to hear from the "accused," that he should offer his opinion. My only objection is that he is being accused of apathy and weak will for refusing to do so without affording the accused an audience.

>Even I, tyrannical despot that I am, afford an accused man the opportunity to
>respond before passing judgment upon him when he is brought before me.
Your Majesty,
The 'accused' as you call him, is not here to respond. He has, as I said, vanished from the realm. This was part of the list of facts given. It would appear that since discarding (but not resigning) his ring, he has left us. He was one of those I wished to see answer my original queries on the subject. This challenge has only occurred because the officials are unable to act (as no official notice of any resignation of the ring has taken place), the
Baron has given no one any personal testimony on the matter and seems to be missing, and the Overlord is unwilling to speak. I simply do not believe that a state of uncertainty should exist for as long as it has. Even as I write this, the Baron has yet to respond even to my challenge. In all likelihood, he will not. It would seem, at this juncture, that no words will be forthcoming from the Baron on any subject.
>Allow me to understand your hypocricy, Your Grace. You insist that the

>issue, despite not having expressed an opinion one way or the other?
Forgive me, Your Majesty, it appeared to me that you were making several assumptions which would indicate that you knew nothing about the matter at all. You seemed to be assuming that the Overlord had no information, which would hint that you had not been paying attention to posts making information on the events that occurred very public. You seemed to be assuming that I had no information myself, which would hint that you did not ask me whether or
not I possessed such information and also hint the same things as your assumption that the Overlord had no information. Thus, my conclusion that you possessed no information on the subject was based on your own comments on the subject.
>You note that you're the only person who seems to care, yet you attempt to
>insult me by suggesting I should keep silent?
I do not believe I offered any insult at all. I believe I stated that you seemed to be lacking the facts that I outlined in the post you are quoting. Which, frankly, you did seem to lack. I was suggesting that you should have made the effort to familiarize yourself with those facts before making your post on the subject. I also attempted to familiarize you with those facts.
>I understand that it's difficult to think en Français while reading and
>writing an Anglais, Your Grace. However, at no time did I pass judgment on
>anyone for making judgments themselves. I am defending the Overlord against
>charges of refusing to pass judgment without facts.
You seemed to be hinting that no facts existed to base a judgement upon. If this were true, then it would be as much an accusation of anyone who had an opinion as it was a defense of those who do not. Hence my presentation of the facts.
>Surely you see the diffference.
The major difference I see is that, rather than comment upon the facts, you seem to be working very hard to find insult. I merely presented facts you seemed not to possess and to believe the Overlord did not possess. I then commented that he SHOULD have been in possession of those facts and that you should have been in possession of them yourself before writing on the subject.
I do not believe the Overlord to be in need of defense. To the best of my knowledge, he has not been attacked. Merely asked to give his thoughts. The line that you seemed to object to was a reference to the fact that he had no thoughts on the matter. Which is true.

With all due respect, a leader has a certain responsibility for the actions and behaviour of his followers. Evan is a Loyal Baron, the man who assisted Cletus in achieving the title he now holds. This is not to say that Cletus should not unquestioningly support such an important ally and follower if that is his inclination. Nor is it to say that he would be wrong if he chose to police the actions of his Loyal Barons. I made comment on the fact the
he seemed to possess no opinion on the matter. When pressed by King Ian, I did reply that I happened to think that Cletus SHOULD have had both the facts in question and an opinion. Which is my opinion. Many have commented, in the past, that the Overlord should be a leader. If the Overlord is to be a leader, an effort should be made to show leadership. This means being informed of events, having an opinion on events, and being willing to share one's
opinion on said events. Or so it seems to me.
While we seem to disagree, I am delighted to see that not all the members of this community are overcome by apathy and possess opinions.

Gentlemen.
I do wait to hear word on the Baron's reply to the challenge offered.
Should he not answer the challenge, mine own judgement shall be swift and impartial.
I do nae care of the circumstances which do cause Duke Marchand to challenge, only the facts of the challenge itself.
Let that be enough.
Know you this. Where it my friend who be accused of throwing away a Ring, I would do all in my power to seek them out and discover the truth.

What exactly does the Overlord lead? What exactly are the leadership priviledges and abilities that an Overlord has? None. The Overlord of Swords is nothing more than the current King of the Hill till someone else knocks them off to take their place. Anything the Overlord says or does does not effec the
ability of any one dueler from doing whatever they want. Yeah, the Overlord can help make things interesting, but in truth, the Overlord is nothing more than a symbolic figurehead, a mantle for bragging rights to say at this moment in time you are the best of the best. Please, no Overlord should really have to worry about wondering what every Baron is doing or has done or might do, except in regards to himself and where he stands iin relation to
the Overlord. Anything that anyone does people just use as an excuse or justification to make their power play to take the fascade of power that is the Overlordship.
In my opinion there is no need for Cletus to have to answer for Evan. Evan needs to answer for Evan, and that's it. What can the Overlord really do to recitfy or resolve this situation besides offer suggestions?

"I do not believe the Overlord to be in need of defense. To the best of my knowledge, he has not been attacked. Merely asked to give his thoughts."
Your Grace;
There is a difference between "merely asking" and "badgering." The former is innocent, and the latter is effectively an assault.
What you've been doing is much closer to "badgering" than "merely asking."
Regards,
Ian Rex.

I believe that 'badgering' an individual involves repeatedly questioning them on a subject. I asked Cletus what I thought on the subject in one post. When he replied, I expressed disagreement with his lack of an opinion in one post. While I have been, recently, engaged in exhanging words with you and with Elijah on the matter, I do not believe I have demanded Cletus speak again. I merely made a note of the fact that he had chosen not to do so in a
challenge to Evan. This was stated as part of my own reasoning for challenging the Baron of the Thirteenth, not as any demand for Cletus to speak further or justify himself.
I have no reason to further question the Overlord on this matter, nor have I for some time. My initial post was a statement of the fact of my challenge to Evan and the reasons behind it, not a badgery of any other individual. The posts that have followed it have been refutations of your own statements. A case, possibly, could be made for my badgering you or your badgering me, but I don't think there is much of a case to be made for my badgering
Cletus at this time.

Honestly, I agree with Ian to the effect that it's badgering, Percy. A copy of your original post:
"as the Baron himself has done nothing to clear up the uncertainty so created and indeed seems to be missing, and as the Overlord has claime dit is 'none of his affair', I am doing something about it."
That is one of the many instances you sound like you are saying to Cletus that he "has no opinion and should have one by now."
I know I occassionally jump to conclusions or get hotheaded myself, so I hope this isn't seen as a preaching. Personally, I can see where you feel you want to know Cletus' stance. I'd like to know it as well; however, I feel I know Cletus well enough to understand his intentions.
