After a discussion with Mrs. Girvin as to the merits of your request, this office has been asked to give an advisory opinion. As will be explained in the following discussion, I believe the proposition, that married couples may share records, must be rejected.
Point I. Precedent
In the petition you stated that " After careful perusal of the rules and study of ta History, there is none that would disallow such a gift. " I cannot agree. The cases pertain to a slightly different issue, but I feel they are of close enough proximity to lend
themselves to the present discussion.
Twice in the history of this sport, claims have been brought stating that a Baron should be able to make a gift of his or her title. The first such claim was brought by this office when Baron Dirk Random bestowed his ring of station upon Kairee, then proprietor of the Red Dragon Inn. The second claim was made by Baron Ulath Fici who attempted to gift his title to Simini. These claims were denied by Duel of Swords Coordinators Devon Goral and
Kalamere Ar'Din respectively.
While it may be argued that making a gift of a barony is substantially different from sharing a record, it is the position of this firm that they are not wholly separable. In both cases you have a Duelist who, through his own "sweat and skill", has achieve a heightened position within the sport and in both scenarios the recipient of such a gift would be granted additional rights unearned in the rings. As such, it is my belief, that there is a
historical attempt at such a proposition and that Mrs. Girvin should rely upon it in making her ruling.
Point II. Ownership
A second reason why such a claim as put forth in your petition should be denied, is that your husband is not the owner of his record. While Jefferey Oakenshield enjoys the benefits of this record and may make requests to DoS Officials in its regard, the record itself is owned by the Duel of Swords. Since one cannot make a gift of something he does not own, Mr. Oakenshield is therefore unable to share his record.
Allow me to explain this position.
A glance at the rules and standards of the sport will show that when a duelist fails to appear for a period of one cycle, said duelist is stripped of his, or her, record. Were said record owned by the duelist in question, the officials of the sport would be unable to do this, as only the owner of property may make decisions as to its disposal.
Also, all decisions as to maintenance of records is the prerogative of the Duel of Swords Staff. The time interval at which losses should be subtracted from wins, for instance. Until recently, that interval was 2 months. It has now changed to 3 months. It is important to note that the staff did not consult each record holder about this. They, essentially, had no say in the matter. Were it true that each duelist owned their record, then it would
have been necessary for the staff to consult them before enacting this change.
Conclusion.
There are many considerations that may be weighed, both in favor of and in opposition to, the proposition before us. A vast majority of these factors, however, deal with emotional topics and concerns as to public policy. I would contend that it is not the duty of the Duel of Swords staff to consider these topics. The province of the staff is to govern over this sport and not the lives of those you participate in it.
While governments are inclined to dabble in such issues; proclaiming a preference for marital bliss and family values, it is not a government to which this appeal is made. That being the case, I can think of no factors more important than precedent and ownership. Since records are not owned by the duelists and similar propositions have twice been ruled against, this also must fail.

Hubie and squints and raises the ivory colored paper to her desk lamp, mumbling. "In... In... In-voy-see...," then flicks it at her. "Looks like a bill."
Helix blinked. "A bill? I thought he was on retainer...."
Hubie shrugs.
Sighing, Helix writes a voucher for the meager profit earned on opening Wednesday nights, and mutters and she passes it to the lad and points at the door for him to go. "Good thing he charges by the hour and not the word. Tell 'im thanks, aye?"

I've never loved a lawyer so much in my life as I do right now. For that matter, I've never felt more confident in Helix as the Duel of Swords co-ordinator for denying the most absurd request I have ever heard. I can't believe even some Barons would even take this matter seriously and show support for it.
I have around sixty wins over losses, though I imagine it's now a shade below that number. Now, I earned that record. I spent around two years dwelling as commoner, and close to another year as every other rank below Warlord. I can't tell you how much pride I have to have gone from twenty or so losses below wins to what I have now. And if I saw someone was given as many or more wins as I have now, I would walk away from
this sport utterly disgusted. I have shed a lot of blood, sweat, and tears to earn each and every one of my wins. Earn. And it would be the saddest day in this sport's history when someone can just give even one win to another on the premise of marriage.
I applaud your decision on this matter, Helix. Keep up the fine work.

In common parleyance, this is refered to as "abandoning" one's record, not being stripped of it. And in point of fact... many WarLords have, in full accordance with the rules, returned and "reclaimed" old records.
While it is true that only WarLords are thus protected... that would seem, in essence, to indicate that a WarLord does in fact, "own" his record.
So... if a WarLord can "reclaim" his record, could that same WarLord not give over his "claim" to another? Obviously with Baronial rings this is not the case, as the rings themselves are property of the DoS and only representative of the rank and station... all of which -is- covered by the rules.
I am reminded of one thing however... the phrase "be careful what you wish for." I have seen people who achieved higher ranks by only dueling those of lesser skill, only to be beaten when they finally do start dueling their peers. While I am not saying this would happen in this case, there is a very good chance that we would see more than a few "WarLords" who lack the experience and skill to hold that rank.
It didn't take me as long as it took Rix to become a WarLord, but I did loose the rank two weeks after I had gained it the first time, and I've struggled a few times to keep it since. Every time I look at the standings, I see another goal for me to meet, and if someone can beat me to that goal by the giving of a "gift", how can I see that as any different from someone who goes out and finds people who will -deliberately- loose to them so they
can gain rank?
I suppose what I am saying is this... Legally, I see little wrong with the idea... but morally, the idea offends me, and I think thats what most of the others who have been against it are saying as well.

I am still a be stumped there myself. The thought of every one getting free wins is just out of line. DoS just don't have the ranks for the hell of it. You have to earn rank. And the higher you want to go in the standings, the harder it gets. There is no easy way out of moving up in rank becuase your skill will be tested some where. A Warlord Tor. or the tring for 10-15 peers. The people also would have no pride in saying they were a
Warlord, ect. What do you expect them to say? Oh, I made the rank cuase I was giving it? Talking about a mess. And poor Golden. He has to deal with *just* that much more. None of the out comes I have listed have a pos. twist, so I ask this bickering over a loved ones wins to stop. The joke is now gone ...

Summer saunters into the Arena, the fresh smell of the Red Dragon Inn, yet to be drenched with the boozers, following her down the stairs. Yawning, she flashes a grin to Hubie as she threads her way through the empty rings and up to her petition. Hubie, the lovely lad, pours her a cup of coffee and pipes up, "Morn, Lady Oakenshield!"
"GAW! Would ya look at all those letters!" Summer stands stunned as she pulls down the Fox's conclusions then wails as she takes the coffee, "How a pair o' eyes supposed ta be able ta look at all tha' wi' out givin' a brain a headache?"
Marcus snickers from behind the bar as Summer stumbles to a chair and collapses shaking her head. Hubie gives Marcus a sharp blue eyed look that tells him to hush. Her dark green eyes light upon Drake's declaration that she can see it be fine with the rules, just morally corrupt. Then scan's through Rix's relief, and Evan's exasperation. Summer smiles touching her wedding ring as she reads Krollon's good natured dismissal. She sighs noting Nate comparing it to Jeff giving her candy, but takes heart spotting Gav's support. "Well if ta man tha' hold Jona's heart be for it, mayhap..."
Summer tosses a few coins down on the table and heads back up the stairs.

Summer saunters into the Arena, the fresh smell of the Red Dragon Inn, yet to be drenched with the boozers, following her down the stairs. Yawning, she flashes a grin to Hubie as she threads her way through the empty rings and up to her petition. Hubie, the lovely lad, pours her a cup of coffee and pipes up, "Morn, Lady Oakenshield!"
