Meanwhile... back at the bunkhouse.....

::knockknock::

::knockknock::

::poundpound::

"Huh? Wha'?" Helix's head snaps up, a copy of the standings from 2 years ago last January stuck to her cheek. "Who's there???" Realizing she was napping and someone's at the door, she slaps the paper from her face and rights her uniform.

::POUNDPOUND::

WHAT ALREADY?!?

As the door creaks open, two dark litte eyes appear. "Sorry lady. I heard you snoring but I didn't want to just come in... in case you weren't.... you know, decent or something."
Helix's eyes narrowed as the little Inn Rat/Staff Gopher slid in. "And why wouldn't I be 'decent' in m' office for cryin' out loud?"
The little man waved a piece of parchment dismissively. "Who knows. You'd be surprised what I've seen. You know, I once saw Tisha...."
Helix grabbed the sheet as it waved past her head for the third time. "I don't want to hear any of yer sordid rumors about Tisha. Drop it. What's this?"
The rat shrugged. "I don't know. I was lugging a case of whiskey down the from the Inn and I accidently dropped it on someone's foot getting it behind the bar. He limped off to find a healer or something when another kid came out of the kitchen and smashed his nose in with the swinging door. Poor kid was cursing and bleeding all over everything. As the second kid dragged the first one off, he said he was supposed to deliver this to you, and
since the mess was supposedly *my* fault, I had to walk down here."
Helix tilted her head. "Kids? What kids?"
The little man shrugged again and fingered an emerald encrusted letter opener on her desk. "I don't know. Two of those little demons that are always working down there."
Helix slapped his hand away before the dagger could mysteriously disappear up the man's sleeve. "Lovely. Ye'll be lucky if they don't hunt ye down and dip ye in honey or somethin' now...." Turning her attention finally to the note that the rat brought in, Helix held it under the desk lamp, her eyes growing wide.
"He's billin' me for arguin' with Drake???"
"Huh?"
"Ugh. Nevermind!" She tore another voucher out of her book, scribbling "Brandon J. Fox" after "Pay To The Order Of". "If Lady Oakenshield doesn't stop quibblin' I'm goin' to be in the red... *again*." With a sigh she passed the voucher to the rat. "To Brandon Fox, Esquire please. He works for SwordPlay. I'm sure ye can find 'im."
A dark brow shot up as the rat rose on his toes. "And what's it in for me?"
Helix smiled. "I'll try to keep Hubie or Marcus for sewin' ye in yer sheets."
The little man grumbled as he headed out, closing the door behind him. In his hand was a voucher worth enough to deny the Callers and QKeeps the new couch they'd been whining for.

I should have known! After all these years, your secret is out!

Summer~

Just let them yap. Weren't these some of the same people complaining about other people who were too concerned with their WoLs. If they're not concerned about WoLs, why do they care who has them and who shares them?

And they can't even call me biased. I'm not even married to share in what I'm supporting (albeit cautiously).

Lady Oakenshield, I am very new to this area... you probably haven't even seen me before... I mean no offense or anything of the sort by asking this. "Do you think gaining in rank without having to really even lift a finger is fair to the other patrons of the Duel of Swords?" I gather that you and Baron Oakenshield are happily married and love each other dearly... but for Jeff to give you wins would hurt you more than
help ya... Yes. I do agree that it would be good for husbands... or wives for that matter give wins to their spouses, but if that spouse does not have the skill or the honor to hold the rank given and loses the rank... its a bunch of non-needed-to-be-wasted WoL. Plus, say some very very high ranking warlord or baron had a 'companion' that was--somewhat of a friend and gave him some WoL so he/she would get warlord. That 'Companion' may not be suited
for the responsibilities of warlordity and may turn into a swell-headed goon ::a few are swell headed goons, but they rightfully gained warlord rank:: I could go on and on.

I do wish to reiterate that I am in no way at all trying to offend anyone. You are probably very very worthy of the rank that your husband may provide, but it opens to door to so many -evils- that could harm the DoS greatly.
Respectfully,

::glares as his eyes scan the written document, no longer taking this subject in with jest::

Aeolus,

If you ever again imply my wife, Summer Oakenshield, does not have da skill and honor required ta hold da station of warlord or any other rank fer dat matter, I will seek ye out sir and remove yer tongue fer speakin' such nonsense. Followed by yer hands fer writin' such and makin' yer beliefs public.

Pray I never see ye in da same ring as myself, fer certainly da Ward of Gondar protects ya from dying, but not from sufferin' unbelievable pain as Chaos tears layers of flesh from yer body.

Sincerely pissed,

Jeff,

I believe you have let your emotions cloud your judgment. Barons come in all shapes and sizes, however I've always believed you to be of the more dignified in holding the title. This type of venom and inability to separate hypothetical from an attack on your wife has undermined that dignity.

As to the attack itself, which I must restate reads as a hypothetical to those of us lacking your emotional attachment to the subject, I should ask whether it be wholly false. Summer's progress in the ranks is duly noted, however she is not a warlord. For one to say then, that she has not the skill to hold that title, is not without proof. I have no doubt that her skill increases with each passing duel and that she shall one day hold that title,
but at this moment in time the statement that she has not the skill is correct.. even if the author did not intend it.

Further more, I'd like to comment on a thing I overheard from you last eve in the arena. You had proposed that since Rix has never been a baron, he does not know what the title entails. That, my friend, is exceedingly narrow minded. Would it be fair of me to say that since you have never been Overlord you cannot understand it? I do not believe so. All of us have eyes and ears and minds, it does not take such a large amount of effort to see what
the position involves and imagine ourselves there.

As I said, I believe it is your emotions that have clouded your judgment. It is commendable to be protective of one's wife, yet only when that protection is called for.. else it strongly resembles paranoia and a lack of self-restraint. Reign in those emotions Jeff. Hold them in check and take another glance at these discussions so that you might see them in the light they were intended.

Respectfully,
~Kalamere Ar'Din...

::karyes post now next to this post having moved it earlier and left his signature, figuring that Karye would cover up posts:: ::finds Aeolus' post where Karyes was:: ::reads about a half a billion posts on this topic of sharing wins::

Yeah I'm back in Rhydin, I stopped by the arena briefly. One thing I don't want to see is dueling fall apart. For certain people sharing wins would be a way of gaining rank easily. For certain people, I am sure Summer is one of them, it is just way to say she loves Jeff. But if we let some people share wins, we have to let others share wins... Then DoS would be no challenge at all. You'd just ask your friend for a few wins rather than gaining them
yourself.

Wanders down the stairs in the late afternoon sunlight and clumps through the rings calling out cheerfully to the serving laddies and then notes with delight the two new serving lassies, Gabrielle and Cari, busy at work mucking out the grime behind the bar. Yawning, having just bothered to get up after a long wonderfull night of counting her blessings with her two sweetest, she stops and squints. Then she growls.
Then she spits, the phlegm bouncing off the freshly polished floor boards to Marcus' horrified glare.

"Ta rat tootin' dirty squirrel eating children of a moth holed slimy toothed worm."

Angrily Summer slams down into a rickety chair and begins to scrawl, stopping to cross out everyother word as she lets everyone know exactly how she feels about the latest bit of tripe to find its stinking way to the DoS. In the midst of her heartfelt attack on everyone, Morte storms down the stairs sputtering off about some silly imp who thought he was actually going to take her home because he bought her an ale. She stops looking at Summer's
face, then quietly reads the stack of papers that set her off. Leaning over Summer's shoulder she tries not to burst into laughter reading the almost incomprehensible reply to Jeff's critics.

Waving Cari over, Morte gets herself and Summer an ale. After a few hours and much ranting, on Summer's part, and a long explanation of just what hypothetical is on Morte's part the following note appears.

To all that be of mind ta question me Jeff;

Kal, there be no better judge of me skill than that of mine husband. If ta ranks apply ta skill - then what of ta Jona, or ta Marzan or ta Heath or ta Gnort or ta many others who have swung wildly in there rank even after attaining a ring. Ya, of all, should be well aware of ta fickleness of style and of the desire ta actually sit around and target a rank. Judge less ya nae be judged - for ta pay of a judge be anger on those he judge against, and
contempt by those he does nae fully support.

Next, I challenge any ta find a better qualified Baron then me Jeff. Nae only does his reigns be longer over a period of time and a slew of rings than most, but he hae seen changes in styles, and met with ta best of them. He be a humble man, and if he say a man, be an ill judge of what it mean ta be a Baron, then me money be with me Jeff.

Rix, getting on a high horse and looking down at others like ya own out-house be fragrant be a stitch and a half. Luv, we who hae a memory know where ya and me Jeff be from. Do nae think we forget it just cause ya got a new address. As for ta Aeolos, ya actions in ta Arena and ya words on ta board speak more of ya then I need ta embellish.

Summer Oakenshield

((Okies...this is in IC, and I know that at least three of the people Summer mentions in her response understand that, I hope Aeolos player does at well. Frankly, I *like* most of the players mentioned - but Summer is furious at their questioning of her Jeff, as those who know her knew she would be. To any who wish to respond, have a ball - but do understand that this is a game, and I frankly think its hysterical - Mary))

Summer,

I have no desire to debate with you, nor to insult your level of skill. I believe you have come a long way since I first saw you in the rings and have no doubt you will, at some point, hold tightly to the rank of warlord.

That said, until you hold the rank, there is more proof of you not having the required skill, than there is of you actually having it. While I am sure you have the utmost faith in your husband, it is not he who determines rank, or skill for that matter. The point being that it is hardly out of line for one to imply that you have not the skill, when you have not yet proved that you do. Forgive me for saying so, as I mentioned it is not my intent to
insult you.

Also note that I will not argue as to Jeff's qualifications. Indeed he has been a fine baron in the past. However, the totality of the past does not, in itself, prove his actions of the present. I am certain his judgment would be less clouded were it not for the involvement of a loved one. Every man has a weekness.. Apparently Jeff's is yours. Understandable of course, but it hardley excuses blowing up at a man who clearly did not attempt to
insult anyone.

Respectfully,
~Kalamere...

(note - Kal's missive to Jeff was written in regard to conversation heard in the Arena the night before, not in response to the non-post post. Writing "not a post" of even "::scopes out the arena making sure not a living soul is around::" would make no matter here as the conversation was overheard in open DoS. )
