I agree with Kalamere. If a parent is visibly seen and can be consulted, then a duel can be had by a child.

The majority of children I see are not supervised. Two year old Ryan le Fay was toddling and dueling a full hour before I ever saw his mother. (As a side note, Ryan was also preaching his superiority over all duelists, an example of the improper education I earlier mentioned.) If a parent is physically there to allow a child to duel, then so be it, but the midnight toddlers out by themselves, which is a crime in itself, should be disallowed for their
own safety.

This isn't bigotry. It is realizing a measure of safety must be kept. The majority of establishments do not serve liquor to children. My god, the discrimination!

>>Jola, if a child's parent is present, why not allow that parent to determine when/if it is appropriate for the child to duel.. regardless of the age of the opponent. Having the parent present and making that choice would be far better than making an unwavering black letter law on the matter.<<

Kalamere,

One of Jola's principle reasons for lobbying for this rule is due to the fact that many of these children are present and duel without parental supervision. While I admit that I have defended children dueling in the past, I do have a problem with the lack of parental supervision that seems so common lately. While some tend to usually be supervised, many seem to always be unsupervised. Knowing that there are several less than savory members of our
community about almost every time the Arena or Annex is open, this worries me. It worries Jola even more, I am sure, because of her past. The suggestion that the parents make the choice is not a bad one. But they need to be present to make it. All too often, they are not.

Percy,

Perhaps I wasn't clear enough, but this is exactly what I was saying. One rule saying that no child of, or under, a certain age, without a parent or guardian present. So long as that parent or guardian is present, however, there should be no need for further legislation saying who, or of what age, the opponent must be. That duty is one the parent should be able to see to.

Kalamere,

Then I am in complete agreement. I missed the similar line in the original post, I think. Thank you for restating it. I appreciate it. If you decide to actively lobby for such a ruling, let me know. I would like to see the children's parents present when the children are. Or at least some sort of adult supervision.

Kalamere, the compromise is a good one, and I would fully support it.

That is part of my revised and final recommendations, in fact, and I stated that the other measures shouldn't be disregarded out of hand, if some don't work. If that were the only thing adopted, I would be quite satisfied.

Thank you.

Quirks a wry smile, pens a note to Lupton.

Lupton

Ryan wasna unsupervised. Ast to the wee lad declaiming his superiority o'er duelist, I seem to recall a brash young commoner by yuir name, doing the exact same thin'. Tis indeed, thee hae nae stopped ast yet. Now shall we begin a search fer yuir kin an' hae 'er ta mind ye whilst ye aire duelin'?"

Gentles

Shouldst Master Evermeadow accede to this "compromise" offered, I address this unto anna parent who dost wish their child to enter the lists, if thee aire 'o a mind ta, send unto mineself a missive declaring thine permission for said child to attend the ancient halls and to duel in the rings. I shall apprise Al and Hubie to maintain a list publicly or privily. The twin serving lads aire always on duty during dueling hours and hae reached the
accepted though arbitrary human "age of majority" of eighteen summers.

Madame Savage,

I care nae whether thee consider me a friend, tis of little import, for ye see lass, I am verra careful whom I wouldst choose as friend. One may choose one's friends, unlike being able to choose one's parents. Tis thine proposal hast nae annthing to do with friendship, Madame, in case that hae escaped thine notice.

I do recall thine comments upon this cork, t'was stating yuir opinion on the matter, for which thee hae little support ast I recall. Tis now ye hae proposed an official sanction of thine opinion with the intent to shove it down people's throats. If thee aire so unintelligent ast to nae understand so simple a concept, tis thee mayhap wouldst seek someone to pay for thee to attend the Rhydin Middle School, tis there thee mayhap might come to
understand the difference between opinion and law, though tis highly doubtful. Tis I dinna believe I hae e'er read annathing nigh ast comical ast thine statements. Tis they read like the whinings of a spoiled child. Mine memory isna selective, Madame, nae atall. What thee may nae know Madame, is I care nae whether thee listen unto me. Madame, I care nae if I exist unto thee, tis I exist. I must say for the tough, harddrinking, harley riding,
tattooed, tough talking wench ye wouldst present thineself to be, thee aire verra thin skinned, Madame. I also seem to recall thine less than cordial attitude unto young Ryan when he didst first wander into the basement.

Kalamere,

I am in agreement with thee that the officials and staff shouldna be held responsible for the care of another's child. I do ponder the fact that to the best of mine knowledge thee aire nae a parent which may or may nae affect thine opinion. I am also somewhat surprised thee wouldst nae consider the topic of race, for tis though the discussion group mayhap be partially comprised of the human race, thee hae seemingly disregarded the myriad of races
and species what both enter the dueling house but those who may do so in future.

Compromise in a matter of a clearly bigoted, exclusionary and prejudical proposal mayhap shall set future precedents for further such exclusionary proposals. One may find compromise a fine tool in some matters, but nae in a matter of exclusion and prejudice. Tis a dangerous precedent to set wouldst nae agree?

It is interesting that no one bothered to ask me or my son if there was a guardian present. I assure each and every one of you that my son is with a guardian at all times; whether you see the guardian or not, is not my concern. Nor am I going to waste my time trying to notify each of you.

My son is allowed to duel anyone and anything he wants to, as long as his partner is willing as well. Let it be known that I encourage him to continue as he has for he is exactly what I want in a son.

Why yesterday it was so amusing, Lupton, he did a spot on impression of you I almost forgot he was not your son. Keep up your lessons, Lupton, he takes to them very very well. I could not have asked for a better role model for him when I am not around.

Wil Savage had been sitting at the console of the Star Wolf for over an hour. The three cigarette butts in an ashtray and another cigarette held lazily between his fingers had marked the progress of time. He finally shook his head and spoke, "Computer on."

[Computer on. Input code]

"Wil Savage. Agent 541. Interplanetary Intelligence and Security...Sector H-42...Code 44-98358-2209."

[Voice match.....confirmed.]

[waiting]

"Open log and begin recording."

[Log open. I.I.S.C. date 6381.487204]

[ready]

"I have yet to comprehend the thought processes that take place in Rhydin. It's beyond me. It would appear that all the price tags have been switched and what is valuable is regarded as cheap and what is cheap is tagged with a high price.

"In all the planets I've seen, it has been universal among the higher orders of life, whether humanoid or creature, animal or whatever, that the young of the species is protected from any violent encounter with adults of the same or other species - usually by the female parenting significant other. There is at least an attempt at protection wherein the young are allowed to socialize and learn with other young until they are old enough to take
their place with the adults.

"Seems that in Rhydin it is considered discriminatory to establish rules to protect the young, relying instead on the premise it's the parent's prerogative to have their children sliced and diced, run though and exposed to any amount of pain if it has been carefully explained to the child why that is happening, and with the knowledge that they will heal, and with the parent watching it all happen. Lupton made a good point regarding this illogical
behavior. Regarding Lupton refer to database entry 68-47398-578339."

Savage drew on his cigarette, closed his eyes and blew the smoke into the air above his head, thinking of the illogic of it all. He continued, "I would wonder if it would be discriminatory to not allow children to participate in strip duels? They certainly witness some very strange customs in the dueling arenas simply by being there. Then again, maybe that's why everyone turns out so strange around here. Maybe the vitriolic character of many here,
including many I once held in reasonable high regard, is intentionally conditioned into them as children. This would explain much, but will certainly require more investigation. I am simply left without explanation in that the people in the dueling community complained about cigarette smoke yet have no problem in children being hurt to the point of having blades thrust though their bodies.

"On the other hand, the dueling community expects the chief dueler, called "Overlord," to be the pinnacle of etiquette with uncompromising moral values. This is indeed strange. In every other world I've visited, the one who makes his or her way to the top of a pyramid of violence is expected to cheat, lie, kick, scratch, bite, plot, and use every underhanded and devious means available to remain in that position. It is not only expected, but the
populace looks upon the methods employed, no matter how immoral and outright evil, with no little admiration.

"In Rhydin it is just the opposite. They expect their Overlord to suddenly turn into some party hostess and they complain if he should so much as change his mind. So I find myself on a planet where the most skillful warrior is suppose to be the epitome of virtue while it is considered discriminatory to raise a voice for the protection of children.

"I've concluded that this illogical behavior is due to the fact that there are no standards of behavior, no universal morality, no plumb line by which to measure what's right or wrong. Thus the message boards are daily renewed with acrimonious tripe proponing some arbitrary stance on the sport, based upon nothing other than that person's opinion. What's remarkable is how violently they defend their positions and attack others. It once reminded me
of the Earth book, 'Lord of the Flies.' Cross-reference database entry 43-22883-111737.

"Saving this planet may have been a mistake, but hope springs eternal, and perhaps logic will one day return.. End Input"

[Input terminated]

"Encrypt and forward to I.I.S. planetary studies."

[Recorded and transferred]

"Computer off."

Wil Savage just shook his head and extinguished the cigarette in the ashtray. His wife needed to get away from this garbage and he knew just the place. He rose from his chair, left the bridge and walked down the corridor to their quarters where she was resting. He turned on the light. "Hey, Jola, baby. Wake up! I've got an idea that will you just can't refuse. . .

Perhaps this is not the community for you if the only time you hold a blade is to kill someone. Duel of Swords is a sport, not a war nor a pack of dogs "protecting their own." No one is asking people to send their children to the front lines or scavenge for food.

Try a using little perspective before making such an absurd statement.
