I know dat kids bleed...can die...and if you are a kid..impressionable...'tis better ta be safe dan sorry..Of all the sports a little one can choose, can't they choose somethin' ot'er dan one with knifes, cleavers, clubs, and gigantic orcy maj-igs dat swing with the force of a 'urricane..If ye saw a parent beating his child with a stick and a knife, ye'd probably march straight to da offices...ifn' ye saw a parent
letting another man, dat moight have no regard for the children's mental and physicall well-being, beat and tear a child with club and sword...well..all ah'm sayin', swords were never originally to be concieved as props in a sport..dey were for warfare...killing...now, ye place a child inna ring, with a ward dat doesn't work 100 % of the time, and give them a deadly weapon? 'as da idea of warfare rubbed away? Dis moight be da 'ealer in me
talkin'...but wearing clothes is far from wielding deadly weaponry, and being skewered...and...as a child..in the arena...wot do ye see? Creatures, just as yeself, stabbing and cutting eachother to bits, and magically being healed..outside..wot do ye see? Creatures...oi, same principals as inna arena...roight? Dead child. Please...please, for the sake of the children...put away ye roight, der roigh,t for free combat with deadly weapons just dis once,
and don't take da chance dat a child might be killed...and if this sport is so intense..dat ye moight die, there is not a man alive dat can tell me wot a child profits from partaking it, dat 'e can not get in any other sport..riding, fine...swordfighting....leave dat to adults dat can seperate magic from natural elements, and are active in war anyway....anyways, dat's just me 'ealer soide speaking, so if it's sounds totally off-base, please
understand where ahm coming from.

When I made the war note, it was not written to Jola. It was to the person who left his/her statement with a dead body.

::Though the head is gone, the words are still there... and the reply as well. So she takes quill to page and posts a note.::

To the killer of children.

Pray to whatever dark gods you know that your identity does not become known to me. Beyond this, I waste no more words on you... nor quarter should we meet.

Al solemnly bring a small casket as Hubie lifts the small body from Marcus' arms. Hubie carefully and gently wraps the small corpse in a clean sheet then places it in the wooden casket. The eleven year old Marcus tucks a stuffed teddy bear into the small coffin. Al carries the casket through the kitchen, then below stairs into the ice room where he slides it onto a wooden shelf.

The woman appears in a soft shimmer next to the cork, the bloodstains and the knife catching her attention. She pulls a cloth from her pouch, retrieving the kriss knife carefully. She tucks it into her magical pouch for a complete work up for fingerprints, a detailed analysis of the materials and workmanship, it won't take long to determine its origins.

Hubie takes Marcus by the shoulder, "Marcus, we'll find who ever did this." Marcus' sniffles rubbing his tear stained red rimmed eyes. The eleven year old knows what death is. He'd been inconsolable when he'd learned learned of the death of Kalaya Madison. He'd been barely eight years old then. Even young Marcus understood that whomever had done this would have nowhere to hide for very long, there were too many clues left behind.

The woman, though having the knowledge, eschews necromancy, a dark art, except in direst need. She knows some who have the skill to work the necessary spells. Al returns from below stairs, a look of determination on his face as he sends Nemo below to watch over the casket, then marches out the back door. In a matter of a half an hour, Al marchs back in, six cloaked and hooded figures following the teenager as he leads them below stairs. Nemo
shivering from the cold of the room, feels a colder chill as the hooded figures descend the stairs. Nemo sidles against the wall then darts up the stairs to the kitchen, followed shortly by a grim faced Aloysius.

The woman made her way to Marcus and Hubie, "Och, Marcus, wee one, see th' tis a box 'o black ribbons places 'pon th' bar in tribute ta th' wee bairn." She gave the youngster's shoulder a gently squeeze. "Tis th' wee one rests now, Marcus, an' tis shall be avenged, res' assured." Marcus rubbed his nose against his sleeve, then went off to his task. Hubie's grim visage spoke volumes as he set about cleaning the bloodstains.

The woman made her way back to the cork, penned a note, a moments thought brought a black dagger from thin air. She slammed the blade into the board, pinning the note firmly.
*********************************************
To the slayer of the child.

Thee can run but thee canna hide. The verra blood of the child thee hae slain shall tell the tale. The walls have eyes and ears. Tis folly to think thee canst slay a child and believe thee shall nae be discovered.

To the community at large,

I am offering a reward of one thousand gold for information leading to the identity of the slayer. I also call upon the skills of those who aire adept in the arts of necromancy to consider crafting the necessary spells to speak with the dead bairn. Mind thee, nae enter below stairs without proper precautions.

::Standing in the deep shadows, the old man sheds silent tears as he watches Al and Hubie prepare the small body and place it in the casket. He is glad to see Jonalyn appear and gather the evidence for analysis.::

::As they all depart, he steps forward and picks up one of the black ribbons from the box on the bar, and ties it awkwardly on his left arm, then steps to the board and reads the messages Jona has penned, nodding his agreement as to the reward offered.::

`" Duel of Swords is a sport, not a war nor a pack of dogs "protecting their own." No one is asking people to send their children to the front lines or scavenge for food.

Try a using little perspective before making such an absurd statement."`

Try some o dat 'sperpective stuff yurselve. Youse say it rightly. Dis is a sport, but itsa "blood sport". Dey be more r'spect fo' a dog who cares more fo' dere pups den ta tos dem in a pit bull ring, den fo' dose who say dey have luv fo' dey offspring den hand dem a wepon and shove dem in a duling ring. Hipocracy is all it is, with parents patetically tryin te gain attention fo' demselves throo dere young ones, no matter de cost.

As I said. You be a funny turn o' people. Yu care more 'bout purtying up da death o' a kid den youse do 'bout preventing da harmin o it. But don't min me. I liak duling kids. 'Sides, me Da gie me a sword when I was 'bout four, and I didnt' turn out so bad.

Jola steps up to the boards and rereads her note one final time, before posting it to the board. "I'm sure this will please a good number of people."

----------------------

Community,

I am withdrawing my proposal regarding children in the arena. I still strongly believe in my proposal, and were I remaining with the Duel of Swords, I would press the matter. It has long been a value I hold dear, to stand up for what one feels is right, no matter the opposition.

However.

This incident has brought to my attention that I do have a great number of good, supportive friends, even among those who disagree with my position on this issue. It has also brought to my attention that I have a few very socially entrenched enemies who obviously get some kind of satisfaction from finding as many ways to publically slander and demean me as possible. I gave them a perfect opportunity with this issue.

It is because of this, that I withdraw my proposal. It is clear that the real issue is lost amidst the hatred and insults.

I hand my banner, as it were, to anyone who chooses to take up the cause. But beware. Life, as you know it, will cease to exist.

Jola.

------------------------------------------

Jola looked to Wil after pinning up the note. He crushed out his cigarette and enfolded her in his arms. "You and me, Baby. Forever," he said, before he kissed her. They walked from the arena, together.

She steps to the ancient cork, a black armband around her left sleeve, perusing Madame Savage's latest missive. She pens a missive, tacks it to the cork, then shimmers a soft azure, vanishing to settle the children in their rooms for the evening.

Madame Savage,

T'would seem yuir "dedication" to the wellbeing of bairns ist somewhat shakey. Thee contradict thineself mightily in stating tis a value ye hold dear no matter th' opposition, yet then declaim thee were simply seeking to discover who thine friends were. Tis thee might hae ascertained th' infermation by simply asking, neh?

I should wonder to whom thee aire refering in thine comment, "...a few socially entrenched enemies who obviously get some kind of satisfaction from finding as many ways to publically (sic) slander and demean me as possible.", speaks volumes. Were thee but seeking coddling, Madame? If so, seek it from thine husband, if thee aire in such dire need. Though I shall coddle a child, Madame, but nae shall I "coddle" a supposed adult who wouldst seek to
force such a bigoted, prejudicial proposal down the throats of this community.

The issue isna about friendship, Madame, tis the issue be about the rights of all, nae just children.

Thine comment, "But beware. Life, ast you know it, will cease to exist." ist nae less than a threat, Madame, a threat against the entire community. Wilt thou be request of thine husband ta hae the dueling house destroyed or mayhap request the services of the I.I.C.S ta mayhap destroy the entire planet? Tis such words and threats I hae heard from nae less than the most despicable of villians, men I might add, that thine husband and his men stood
firmly against. In fact, men and women hae died to protect the rights of the downtrodden down through the ages upon thousands of worlds or hast that ast well escaped thine notice, Madame? The only truly obvious thing wast that thine proposal wast just the pitiful ploy of a verra insecure woman ta gain attention an' nae a true dedication to the wellbeing of children of any species or of the community.

Jona~~~

Mayhaps I've misunderstood what was being proposed and why. You've used the terms *bigoted, prejudicial proposal* a few times now, and fer tha life of me I'm truly at a loss as to why. As I said, mayhaps I've misunderstood, but I thought we were discussing the protection of our children.... To me that doesn't seem either bigoted or prejudicial.
Would ya mind, please explaining it to me. I truly don't see what ya mean.

"such a bigoted, prejudicial proposal"

Ifn' ye have seen Jola in person, constructively talk of the topic, and saw how strongly she felt of it, there would not be a man alive that could tell me she isn't doin' fer da welfare of children..to be bigoted and prejudicial, is ever so far from what appears to be Jola's intent...'tain't prejudice ta want a child to be safe.

::Edible steps onto the boards and takes a sheet of paper, writing on it slowly::

"To whom it may concern:

My name is Edible, Master at Arms here at the Duel of Swords. I have never taken the time to post my opinion, but this night I feel it is necessary. On the night of January twenty-ninth, around Ten O'clock, I dueled a child with the identification of Ldy1horses, going by the name of Cherri. Lady Khrys called this duel. Seeing the child, armed with what looked like a butcher knife, stick her arm down and out to go for a low cut, I prepared a
thrust with my Silence Glaive. Noticing the frailty of the child, I reversed my grip on the Glaive, tapping the right shoulder of the child with the butt. She crumpled, a trace of blood falling from her mouth. I realized with horror that the ward had indeed failed, and the child, moments later, died. Since this could not have been a killing blow for any individual, be it child or adult, especially at my age (Sixteen), I came to the unsettling
conclusion that the ward had actually misfired, causing much more pain and damage to the frail one's body. A local priest, going by the identification of SirCassius, spoke with God to bring a glimmer of life down to the dead corpse. After much praying, he told us that God wanted her in his kingdom. Interpret that as you will, but it means that said God would not give a fair chance in life to a child of eight years of age.
I am not crying for a revolution, nor am I for the child-protection act, but something must be done about either the ward, or as you may call it, God. I have been training for most of my life under the guidance of a great master of magic, but have not been adept at that which destroys, only which heals. Perhaps in time I could defy this God and bring this poor child's body life once more. Until then...

::reads through the message left by Edible several times, looking for some clue as to what might have transpired on the fateful night recounted in his transcription::

To All Who May Have Interest:
I have read Edible's recounting of the events that transpired on the night of the 29th day of this month. As the temporary Guardian of our Ward of Gondar, I feel it necessary to document the fact that the Ward appeared to be in full force and operating correctly during the ill-fated time of this child's death.

I do not claim to be all-knowing of the workings of the Ward, but I have witnessed it's interaction with the rings for some time now, and I have come to recognize a certain manner of response from the Ward to injuries suffered by our duelists within the confines of the Arena and without. I noticed no disruption of the Ward during the time noted that could possibly explain the deed which transpired.

However, I have noticed on many occasions that outside influences, most notably the frame of mind of a victim of injury, can and do affect the ability of the Ward to provide revitalization to one injured in the Arena. I attribute this to the known fact that magical healing, such as provided by our Ward of Gondar, can be thwarted by the recipient of such healing, if he or she strongly believes that the magic cannot work on them. This is a polite
way of saying that Ward's healing can be denied or refused by a strong-willed person hell-bent on causing himself injury.

Also, having lived with, and been an intimate part of the linkage between the Ward of Gondar and the ever-healing Stone of Earth (to which I and the Ward are presently bound), I believe it would be nae on impossible for the Ward to actually inflict damage on one of our duelists, as has been alleged. If the Ward were linked directly to a person or spirit, as has been the case in past times, this action would not be outside the realm of possibility.
However, the linkage of the Ward through the Jewel effectively blocks the possiblility of human intervention. (not to mention the fact that, were the Stone not present, I, as the humble Guardian of the Ward, wouldst ne'er consider subverting the power of this talisman.)

Upon reading Edible's account of the child's death in the rings, I can put forth only one logical explanation for this event. The 'child' in question may have been 'planted' or subverted by someone with a sick mind who was trying to prove a point in reference to our recent discussion regarding allowing children to duel in the Arena.

I morn the passing of this child with a heavy heart and tear-filled eyes. And I rededicate my vigilence to the Guardianship of the Ward of Gondar, and to the Powers of Light for which I and the Stone of Earth both stand.

With humble regards for all, I am
~Auritan the Meek

You know...in Rome...here would have been the punishment for whomever has slain this innocent child...

Placed in a sack with a viper, a fighting rooster, and a rabid dog, the sack sewn shut, and tossed into the River Tiber.

Just a suggestion.

Her tears yet staining her cheeks, she pens a note, tacking it to the cork.

Edible,

Tis rather odd that thee state th' the one thee named wast slain in a duel, for tis she be listed ast having dueled in past wi' seemingly nae injury. Tis ast Auritan the Meek an' current Guardian 'o th' Ward hast penned with regard ta th' workings of th' Wards, ast well ast th' fact that th' wards' 'ealing hast been known 'pon occasion ta nae affect certain individuals fer manna diverse reason.

Tis indeed mayhap the 'child' wast subverted by a sick minded personage in an attempt to prove a point. Tis I hae means by which to ascertain past sighting of the alleged 'child', though I do recall one by th' name thee hae mentioned seeming right interested in attempting to place a surveillance 'pon me. Tis odd behavior from one th' be alleged ta be a mere 'child', an e'en more heinous if a 'child' wast used ast a spy bu some foul personage, neh?
Tis ta be pondered that th' 'child' hae both dueled seemingly unscathed an be seemin' ta be followin' someones orders in attemptin' ta 'spy' pon me doin's in th' basement.

I join with Auritan in mourning the passing of a child. Tis also quite possible th' 'child' dinna succumb ta thine tap 'pon 'er shoulder, bu' mayhap hae entered th' ring suffering from some illness. A tap 'pon th' shoulder wouldna bring blood ta th' mouth in mos' circumstances. If th' deity th' watches o'er th' child wished 'er ta come ta 'im, tis th' canna be forestalled save fer th' mos' wondrous thin' termed a miracle. The aire courageous in
th' thee wouldst consider defyin' a deity, sir. Yet wouldst consider leavin' th' child in th' arms 'o th' deity an' seekin' out who wouldst so use a child in such a heinous manner, for t'would seem ta me tis a foul adult be likely behind th' situation.
