::shaking his head:: "Some people just don't get it."

Just because someone can win duels doesn't make them anything special. Anyone can grab a stick and hit someone else with it.

What makes one worthy is how they present themselves to others. How they treat others. How respectful they are to others. Not how many matches you've won or how many WoL you have.

I agree with G, to a point. But I also think that worthiness can be deemed by the "comitee".

Master Xavier Ta'main,

Tis ast thou state, thou art relatively newcome unta these ancient halls. Tis methinks nae so much that the new Overlord isnae well known ast tis 'is actions an' comments what seem to be scrutinized. Tis some hold a record ast being the full measure of a duelist. Tis others what look more deeply into the personage.

In las' eve's match, neither Magnus nor Long didst deign t' show e'en th' least modicum 'o simple courtesy unta th' other after th' match. Tis such that doest do dishonor unto the title ast well ast this ancient sport. The new Overlord hae commented after th' match that he wouldst proclaim 'is doctrine verra soon. The new Overlord dinna appear taken aback upon being apprised that he wouldst face immediate challenge. Tis he didst, howe'er, seem
some disconcerted that he wouldst nae be looked upon ast favorably after 'e hae garnered t' title ast he hae been afore th' match.

Tis there be those what hold that the new Overlord hast nae been oft present and do decry that ast a failing. The same accusation wast lain upon the former Overlord, the Lord of Questrion, Valmion, ast wast it cast upon the former Baron, Ford Prefect. The Baron, Ford Prefect's record didst fall to dismal depths, yet 'e wast held ast one what displayed honor ast well ast skill for in he didst defend the First Ring in five successful defenses afore
he didst retire.

Tis those what decry the fact th' t' New Overlord seems nae t' be acquainted with those what hold title. Tis if'n I am nae mistaken, nae the first time that title wast sought where in the challenger hae nae met the challenged until they didst meet within the ring to do battle. T'was some what didst consider that Lord Gunthar O'dwyer wast nae suitable ast Overlord despite that he hae been dueling for manna a long year. He hae departed the rings for
some time then hae returned. T'was he wast known only by a few when he didst garner the title and didst face swift challenge.

Ast to the seeming swiftness whereby challenge may be offered unto the new Overlord, that ist ast well something that hae happened afore in the long history of these ancient halls. Thou dost mention the swiftness of the challenges laid unto the former Overlord, Eros De Burgo. Tis his removal by Cristian de Oro wast a grand eve for in that Eros hae shown himself to be utterly vain glorious ast well ast a drunken lout what hae shown upon numerous
occasions an utter disdain for this ancient sport.

Tis the Overlord, Dalamar ArD'aumon didst face repeated challenges during his long reign. Thou make comment upon the Lord Dalamar contemplating retiring. T'was his loyal Baron, Seamus McDonnaugh, that didst call upon his Overlord, Dalamar, ta retire. Dalamar dinna retire, nor didst he bemoan the fact that he faced repeated and swift challenge. T'was shortly after the Council of Barons didst rule in the matter of Dalamar's nae appearing for the
challenge of the warlord Huma Dragonbane that Seamus didst declare himself ast renegade to the crown and didst lay challenge unto Dalamar.

Master Ta'main, tis been a long while since the community wouldst chose to turn out in droves ta attend a challenge fer the title of Overlord. Tis the largest crowd in recent history be that of the challenge of the warlord Eros de Burgo unto the then Overlord Dalamar ArD'aumon.

Ast t' how swiftly challenges aire offered tis oft nae rhyme nor reason save that some wish their names to be writ in the histories whilst others do challenge for perhaps deeper reasons.
Witness the challenge of Devion Silverblade unto the then Baron Percival the Chaste for in that Percival hae offered deadly insult unto the lady Kaprielle. Witness also the challenge of the warlord Percy Marchand de Clermont unto the Baroness Morgana le Fay du Cornwall for in he didst decry her behavior ast a Baroness.

The former Baron, Jeffrey Oakenshield didst defend his title succesfully numerous times whilst on the other hand, the former Baroness Luthien Tinuviel lost her title in her only defense. She faced challenge twice prior t' that in her year long reign, though she dinna set foot in the ring t' defend the Ninth for in the Overlord Dalamar didst didst step in for his loyal Baroness. Therefore it mayest be said that she failed t' e'er successfully defend
her ring.

Thou make mention of the Original Nine Barons. Indeed the warlords what didst dance in that Tourney were, with rare exception, some of the most honorable ast well ast most highly esteemed duelist what hae e'er graced the rings. Tis thee mayest also witness the reign of the deceitful Jaycynda Ashleana to learn just how far honor hae fallen in these ancient halls.

Madame Elgarette,

The mere fact that thee hae nae seen Long Wang Lo dinna mean that he hae nae been present in the basement. In that thee hae ne'er seen Barons having to introduce themselves unto the Overlord, again, tis perhaps that be that thee hae nae been present to witness it. Tis nigh almost amusing that thee be in a seeming snit o'er the matter, considering thee didst upbraid Long Wang Lo right vigourously, yet if'n Ah am nae mistaken thee hae ne'er so
decried anna other fer the verra same thin'.

Most recently the Warlord Aspen hae nae idea who be upon the Baron's Council when he didst seek t' hae the matter 'o the non-appearance of the Baron Methous fer his challenge adjudicated by the Council. Yet thee made nae anna comment 'pon that. In point of fact, during the reign of the Brazilian, Cristian de Oro, t'was numerous warlords ast well ast some Barons ast well ast manna 'o the community what hae nae met him. Tis amusing that thee state
that thee shudder to call Long Wang Lo Overlord, whilst thee dinna so declaim against Eros De Burgo, he who hae shown himself to hae been utterly callous unto thine former love, Dalamar. How utterly droll that thee find it a compliment that Eros and Myst De Burgo wouldst so insult Dalamar's memory by chosing to add his honorable name to one of their bairns. Tis methinks Dalamar wouldst turn thrice in his grave were he to know.

Baron Cassius Gaius Maxim,

Tis interesting thee wouldst decry the skill of Master Long Wang Lo based on his finishing the warlord's Tourney in sixth place. Tis if'n t'was but two Rings available, sirrah, thou wouldst nae be wearing the Eighth. By thine logic, wouldst thee hold that the thrice Overlord, Xenograg kathu-Darelir, didst garner the right to challenge fer the title by default by finishing tenth in the first Baron's Tourney? Tis rather amusing that thee seem to be
whimpering that thee were nae shown respect by the New Overlord when tis thee hae nae offered anna unta him.

People seem to be having a very hard time with this. I *admitted* a good point was raised
with the Original Nine tournament. I *stated* that in general, Long was a talented duelist. Just not of Overlord-level, *in my opinion*, which I, like everyone else, am entitled to. Lord Ta'main mentioned the Tournament showing of Long as a reason he shouldn't be challenged quickly, and I stated that this wasn't a reason on skill alone. I also stated in another post that his feat in the Tournament wasn't all that bad either. And the Xenograg
comparison is apples and oranges. Yes, Xeno finished 10th, as you say. He's also a three time Overlord and a legend of the sport. He is more than satisfactorily proven. Long isn't. Lastly, G stated that it is behavior and actions that matter more, and in this I firmly agree. It's also my big deal with Long. I stated why in my letter to the Council.

Upon reading over Jonalyn's post several times, his mind begins to turn spirals on him. He is almost unsure of what to think, this post now seemingly turning into an avoidable altercation, as he originally wrote they often are avoidable.

He planned to cease that from happening, smother the flames before they grew out of control, all the while keeping the candle lit, allowing patrons of the community to speak their mind in a respectful manner.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Again I write to the patrons of these halls,
I have spoken privately with several other patrons, some of high esteem, some whom are as common as myself. The varied perspectives accompanied by constructive criticism, so to speak, has widened my eyes to a whole new level. As I am attempting to learn more of how the community runs these days. Jonalyn, it seems I was incorrect in my assumption of Dalamar wishing to retire, as I spoke I know of his reign only through the histories I read, and it
seems I was off in my judgment, I apologize.
Secondly I again wish to state that in my original letter I used names mostly in example, not for specific points, rather for a broad picture which I was attempting to paint, and it seems has turned into some abstract art. However, it was also brought to my attention in private that during Eros's reign, his swift challenges were with in his ability to avoid. Perhaps not avoid but rather he could have stretched each challenge to a full three weeks
apart had he used his maximum limit of time. As well he could have asked for an extension if his body was not fully healed.
Drakewyn, In an early post you commented that it is not my duty to ask other's if "it is worth it". "If the title is worth it." Along with the statement of honor I wrote. What I had hoped was interpreted by that was exactly what you stated yourself. Don't ask others, ask yourself. It was not I whom the question was from, but rather simply there for a person to see. A person could interpret each one of those three or four word statements in unlimited
ways, how so I cannot, nor do I wish to dictate. Though I thank you for your input.
As I further dig into the histories, and now speak with a limited few, the more intrigued I find myself. Cassius Gaius Maximus, I have noted in recent weeks and months, as I have been present, that you are a quick judge on your standing on the overlord. However I do not mean to single you out. I find it almost idiotic that a person, baron rather, could judge an overlord, the leader of the community (or supposedly) simply based upon the fact if they
test or not. Perhaps the overlord is tentatively against testing, why would they wish to be bound by their word, letting the council control their actions? Cassius, the initial reason I mentioned your name was I was enlightened in a constructive, as well as informative, letter that you yourself had the overlord step into the ring and defend you in a challenge. Now again, I do not find this wrong in any sense, it is your given right, and you chose to
use that right. Then I heard of the circumstances and could only frown upon the inquiry. So why then would you be, correct me if I am wrong, so quick to limit your views upon the community leader? Surely that is not the sole dimension of your reasoning of alignment? Any other who wish to reply to what I just stated, please do, as I wish to hear of what your perspective upon the matter is. If any feel attacked by any of what I say, I apologize, I am
only curious, so please if you respond do it in an informative way rather than an insulting. Remember, excellence is not an act, rather it is the result of our everyday actions. So in that view it could be stated that excellence is a habit.
With Respect,
Xavier Ta'main
Just as he makes his way to the cork to post another missive, he finds yet another tacked up. Written by Cassius Maximus.
Softly he shakes his head as it seems unclear to any that he never stated that Long shouldn't be challenged so swiftly, nor does he care to a certain extent. He simply used the man as an example and only showed a certain perspective of the matter. Regardless, he simply places his newest letter upon the board, his slender fingers press a single tack into the cork, holding his letter in place.
A soft breeze sweeps through as he turns to depart, the winds of change. Or perhaps simply another opportunity left un noticed, spiraling away with the very fall breeze that carried it through.
Master Ta'main.
I wish to clairify something for you, based upon your most recent posting.
Baron Maximius is not against the use of the Test of Worthiness, nor does he believe it should be applied in every case. His stance against the previous Overlord was based upon Magnus' stance absolutely against the Test of Worthiness being applied in any case.
As for our current Overlord... I have already made my comments known in a previous posting. I see him as no more or less an absentee duelist than some previous Barons and Overlords have been.
Accusing someone of absenteeism without allowing them time to prove they will or won't be around once they have the title is overly critical in the extreme.
You didn't need to be sent that letter, Lord Ta'main. I could have informed you of the fact that I once asked Eros to step in when he was Overlord. Also, if you'd talk to Eros, you'd find out that I was ready and willing at a moment's notice to step in for him on the Test should a challenger come that he felt was worthy of it. Also, as far as my judging of Overlords: It's called politics.
Jonalyn~
Upon reading the part of your post directed at me, I noticed that you had very good points.
Then I got to the inane comment about the middle name of Eros and Mystik's upcoming babe. I am curious as to what in all the Nine Hells that has to do with the new Overlord. As to my opinion on it..unlike you, I am not going to dictate the name a couple gives their child. It is *their* child, not mine and *certainly* not yours. Neither of us have a say in the child's name.
But, I digress. What the middle name of Eros and Mystik's son is has *absolutely* no bearing on this discussion on the Overlord or the Overlord Challenge match the other night.
~~
Congratulations, Overlord Wang. Indeed, well won against a dangerous opponent.
Congratulations on a fine reign, Lord Magnus.
And to Avery, two things;
I never faulted or criticized those who issued swift challenge to the Overlord. It seems logical to sieze the day, given that another would do the same had you not. You are most deserved in manner, bearing and skill. I do believe that you shall be the next to join Dexter and I in the Tri-Crown, and mayhap, the first dual Title Holder in History.
Eeep! 'nuff of this silly silly stuff about worthiness! I see from rules, one have weapon, he fight with weapon, he win duels, he challenge, he gain title, he challenges oncemore, he gains crown; only thing, only! Only thing I see that'll make he able to have a title would be his ability to winny duely. Now, nothing else would make someone unworthy unless they declare themself unworthy by their own standards, or
someone else declares the title-holder unworthy by their personal ideals, and challenges. This is a sport, to excel in a physical sport, you must do so by action.
He did what he had to do to become Overlordie. Therefore, he's of Overlord-skill level. Just because the community hasn't set up tougher standards/means of gaining the title doesn't mean you must take away from another's accomplishment. Eep! Yehp! Eep!
As his hazel eyes study over a few post, he finds a frown resting upon his lips. A slight shake of his head in frustration brings him to his last post.
Drakewyn,
I would like to thank you for speaking on Cassius's behalf, though I was more interested in his own views, and from my perspective, accompanied by what I have heard and seen, he tends to make his judgment on whether or not an overlord tests. Such as the first thing spoken to the newest overlord being "What is your stand on Testing" or rather something of the sort. It was a question intended toward him, though if you have your own views I
would like to hear them.
Cassius, the only reason I felt the need to ask you was I simply found it ironic. Regardless of whether or not you would step in for Eros it seems that if one is more so against testing that they wouldn't ask the overlord to step for them, or vice versa. Though I thank you for your later insight after Drakewyn's vague interpretation.
It is now dawning on me that I may never get my original point across in the way I would like, so this shall be my last posting upon the cork until I am a regular in the community. Perhaps the anonymous letter I received was correct from the beginning. The overlord, regardless of friends, greed, power, idiocy, or even morality, is overlord for one reason, their strength with the blade. For in the end that is what all politics fall too, the ability
to wield the steel. Regardless if one uses the test, there is still a duel to be fought, and eventually it shall be the overlord that must step in and defend what they feel is theirs, with no other to help them. Until one defeats them or they choose to step down on their own will, it shall be they who hold the crown.
On my final note I would like to apologize to any I have offended, if there are any, in my examples. Cassius, though it may seem I singled you out it is solely because you were the one my limited knowledge of history could allow as an example in the specific instance.
Until then,
Xavier Ta'main
As he steps from the boards the frown remains, his heart and mind yearning to speak what he feels, yet as the pen sets the words on paper the wrong image is projected.
Madame Elgarette,
Madame, perchance then Mystik an' Eros failed ta carry through with their pronouncement that they wouldst seek thine approval fer their choice 'o a name? Indeed, Madame, were thee nae sought out ast proclaimed, an' dinna grant thine assent, tis mine apology unta thee. Howe'er, if'n thee didst approve, t'would seem thine statement th' thee hae nae anna say be ast false ast thee hae proven thineself to be, Madame. Rest assured, Madame, that I didst
'old Lord Dalamar ArD'aumon in highest esteem and wouldst nae wish his name to be so sullied. Rest assured also, Madame, that I didst make that known unto both Eros and Mystik De Burgo. Thee may consider the comment inane, Madame, tis thine right. Thou shalt pardon me if'n I do consider thine comments made with regard to Long Wang Lo e'en more so.
Actually,
I would like to know what the child of Eros and Myst has to do with the views of the New Overlord, Long Wang Lo. Personally, I see no connection.
